Mary Earps talks Privacy Struggles, Clubs Failing Players and her PSG move | Point Of View

Originally from Nottingham, Mary Earps is a goalkeeping legend and a fierce advocate for equality in the women's game.
She initially started her footballing career at Leicester, before moving to Nottingham Forest and then Doncaster Belles, where she found regular game time.
In 2012, Earps joined Birmingham City and made her UEFA Women’s Champions League debut in 2013. Earps moved to Bristol City in 2014 and became a regular starter, before the team were relegated a year later.
Earps then made a move to Reading and won the PFA Team of the Year in her first season. Finding her rhythm, Earps made a BIG move abroad to defending Bundesliga Champions VfL Wolfsburg.
In 2018, the team won their third consecutive domestic double. But Earps was lured back to the WSL and made a bold move to join the recently recreated Manchester United.
The move paid off. Earps shone and England manager Sarina Wiegman made her England No.1 for that historic 2022 European Championship winning summer.
Earps went on to win the WSL Golden Glove in the 2022-23 season with Manchester United, with the club finishing second in the WSL, securing Champions League football for the first time in its history.
Earps again shone on the international stage and won Golden Glove at the Women’s World Cup in 2023. Earps joined PSG in summer.
Earps tells us about her career journey, the pressures of advocating for the women’s game, the changing relationship with fans and why she made the move to PSG.

My favorite Mary Earps moment was when she won the FIFA Best Women's Goalkeeper of 2022 and she let out an unbelievable speech about how you should always be unapologetically yourself and to never give up. That speech has changed my life and will stick with me forever.

One of my favourites is Mary’s celebrations to her saves in the penalty shootout vs Nigeria which kept them in the competition then backing it up with a massive save in the WWC final! she had an incredibleeeeee tournament 😍

My favourite memory from Mary is when she saved that famous penalty in the WWC 2023 final. I was in my hometown Nottingham, out in the pub to watch the game with my dad, surrounded by Mary’s Hometown Fans! When Hermoso, stepped up to take the penalty I looked around the beer garden. Every single face was filled with confidence that Mary was not going to let this one in. After she saved it I’ve never felt so proud in my life. A girl from my hometown (big up West Bridgford) had just saved the most important penalty of the tournament. To me it felt like we had won the game at that point, it was so special and I will remember that moment forever.

Mary really stood out to me when she made that beautiful speech at the FIFA awards. Giving a talk about always being yourself unapologetically was beautiful and shinning a light on women's mental health is so important to hear from her. My favourite Mary Earps moment was when she saved Hermoso’s penalty in the FIFA World Cup Final in Sydney. She created a moment that would be one of the greatest ever World Cup moments since its inception in the 1930’s. She’s unapologetically herself, one of the greatest ever players and uses her platform to create positive social change. She’s got a fantastic personality and has a wicked sense of humour (the lobster costume) too. The Mary Earps effect has helped to change football forever and for the better.

My favourite Mary Earps moment is very hard to pick as I am inspired by everything that she does I think the way she holds herself on and off the pitch is amazing and the way that she has had to change and develop as the game has been changing as well is impressive. But I think my favorite moment is in the world cup final where she saved that penalty as she did what she needed to do for our country and the way that she has that much composure and confidence in herself to perform so highly at the highest level with that much pressure on just her shoulders is so iconic and inspiring.
