No, she was in love with a boy who didn't know how to love her back. He loved her but hus immaturity and lack of manly guidance in his life kept him.from fulfilling the promises he made to her. Mary hasn't had a good report with men throughout her life
For Sure 04/22/24.. they don't make music like this no more! Check out unplugged jay*z w/jaguar wright ...phenomenal ! The 80's to the 2000's was top tier for Hip-Hop & R&B
Not an ounce of loyalty or commitment in his countrified self. Add the alcohol and whatever and it was doomed. Sad tho. Mary looked so sad.The sadness at the end.
@marisa7312 I guess it's like any other job.... Check your feelings at the door and go in to get that money. 🤷🏾♂️ From the outside looking in, they were a dope couple.
She seems to be in more pain then he is, she is singing to him but he's not singing to her,but facing the public. The connection is not there, he's singing to prove his singing skills, she is pouring out her heart to him😐
Ikr the good ole days when we all hung outside on the steps, late nights eating seeds, playing uno, etc… hopscotch jump rope ….some front doors left open at night no so much crime and danger in this time 🙏miss these days
I dunno. These were the days when talent was exploited to a maximum, people were cheated out of their money, and (in such an industry) drugs, though temporary, were the only retreat. We did get good music, but I suppose record label executives sought the current "overnight celebrity" trend as a way to make more money, and thus gone were the days of a talented hub hitting the waves. This is why you see otherwise garbage pail persons blowing up in a matter of a day. This is also the reason why the shelf life for any entertainer is constantly shifting lower and lower. Things will never go back to how they once were, especially with the introduction of the internet and AI.
I remember watching this for the first time and thinking, "Did he just break up with her before they had to sing?" It's obvious that she's in love with him & he's just performing the song.
I remember watching it when it first came out in the 90s I remember thinking damn then I watch the interview of her is later and she said she they were having problems and they were using drugs
Y’all just be making up ish! They don’t look like they have tension at all. Keep practicing your body language skills because y’all are poor at interpreting body language
Everyone knows that K-ci is an exceptional singer, but Mary definitely held her own on this one. Her vocals were awesome. Absolutely amazing duet! So glad I grew up in the 90s. Rnb at its finest👏🏾👏🏾👏🏾
@@karenmiller9825ummm rewatch the video. They were literally staring at each when Mary was singing in his face. Y’all have selective hearing and seeing. It’s gaslighting
Being older and seeing how Mary J and K-Ci are now makes me realize just how much the music industry exploits and destroys plenty of the young and talented people who just want to have a career in entertainment.
This was a beautiful song! Mary was singing that song like her life depended on it. She tried to work it out with him. No one deserves to be verbally, physically, mentally and emotionally abused. That’s when she was doing an 8 ball a day. She can still blow!!
hahaha...facts! Somebody posted a clip on IG years ago about that. I posted it and tagged K-Ci and he actually posted on his IG. Hilarious though, he definitely was the first to do it, way before it was a thing! lol
Well Mary is a raw sangah not a technical singer so because of this she may not develop vocal nods (speaking from that point of time) but she will suffer with vocal fry. The difference is vocal fry is temporary but happens more often than not when your vocals are consistently being used especially if you’re a vocalist that does tours and interviews outside of your sessions point in case Mary J Blige. Vocal nodules can last for more than six months and requires lots of rest and although it don’t make you sound raspy, like vocal fry, it does limit your range and octave (s). You maybe able to access a level of head voice, a level of falsetto that it forces you to use when trying to reach high note and chest voice and it forces and it forces you to sing with your speaking voice point in case Mariah Carey. These two vocalists goes all out so Mary will sing songs that resonates with her speaking voice/Chest and nasal, thankfully she’s a soulful singer, and Mariah will be forced to sing only in head voices and chest and possibly falsetto but I think she’d rather lip-sync. Some have to wait years…so many years that it’s no point in coming back point in case Christina Aguilera and Brittany Spears. Technical singers, like Beyoncé, don’t do interviews, acting or mingle much because their voice is their sole career so they have it on reserve which is why they can always sound so crisp, clear, melodic and full of range. They don’t need the soulful emotions that Mary conveys or the high sky pitches that Mariah taps into…they simply only need the runs with a clear voice and if they don’t have that then it’s over for them point in case Whitney Houston. Mary has more options than any of em as she can rap-sing, sing-rap, speak a song or sing a speech she is cemented in her career as a diverse artist and actress, producer and writer as well as other endorsements. Vocal fry can happen real quick as you get older and so, unless they have a vocal rejuvenating remedy Mary will never sound like this ever again but is still capable of giving us great and amazing music. Others don’t have that luxury as they get older especially those in their mid 40’s and 50’s…hell, at 50+ Mary is doing hella good and looking flawlessly amazing, like the Goddess she is.
The raw and honest emotions in this performance are palpable. Street gear and a microphone....Classic 90s R&B. I know it will probably never happen but I'd love to see them do another duet. 🤷🏾♀️
@kristinaparker5597 that would be phenomenal! They should have had an Uptown reunion 25 years later, (which would have been 2017) while Andre Harrell was still with us.
I think the artists today have a lot of talent. There are some great singers out there. Many of them just aren’t singing with soul. I think that’s the difference.
In the beginning of the song Mary looked so sad. Then she got into the performance. And KC sounded very good as usual. This performance of the both of them singing together was very nice indeed.👏🏽❤️👩🏽🎤🎤👨🏽🎤💙💯🔥
They actually had a very toxic relationship and had just had an argument backstage before they had to perform together. You can see both of them were a bit lowly in the beginning then as they continued singing the lyrics, the chemistry came alive.
@@PhoenixGoddess it really was I remember reading Sister 2 Sister magazine and Jamie Foster Brown did an interview with Mary's mother and she talked about how she didn't care for Kci she would try to see Mary and he wouldnlet her Momma in i never forgot the article Mary loved him but Kci didn't live her like he should have sad
They were so young and dangerously in love.. she was MARY HOOD PRINCESS AND UNDENIABLY THE QUEEN AND HE WAS K-CI PRINCE CHARMING WITH A VOICE THAT’LL WET A OCEAN. She was so pretty and he damn sure was fine❤❤❤😢
Wow! Now this was great music. I miss this era. Mary and KC was together back then. She didn't look happy and was all over her face. Beautiful performances. ❤
I remember when this aired and the performances were all fantastic. This right here though blew my mind. The production, arrangement and emotion came through the tv. In my mind it set the standard for live R&B performances. This was Mary J. Blige at her peak and Jodeci was the one of the top R&B groups. You cant watch this and not feel the real emotion in this. If anybody wondered how they felt about each other it was right here on display.
I’m really reliving my 30’s with this video and I love Mary J and K/ci gives older soul singer vibes-- perfect and so Dope!- it is now 3:45 AM March 21, 2024, and I’m up reminiscing
This performance reminds me of the “ What’s Love Got To Do With It” movie the part where Tina was on stage singing and she started crying…you can feel the tension and sadness between these two.
Two of the greatest voices in the R&B musical industry. YEAHAAAA!! 😊❤❤❤❤ OMG!! Mary gave me CHILLS when she came in. Just DAMN¡! ❤❤ LET'S hear it for the band and accompanying singers also. YEAHAAAA!!!
In the 80's, the dynamic duo was Staci Lattisaw and Johnny Gill....also very powerful voices. Check out "where do we go from here"..I still get chills today listening to that song. talent like this is so rare these days.
Just in case ya'll didn't know, that's Dave Hollister singing live background on this song and going back in forth on the part where K-Ci sings, "no one, no one." Dave was helping them sing background during this while live concert. Some folks don't know that Dave the cousin of K-Ci and Jo-Jo. I remember when I first heard "Brenda's got a baby" by Tupac. I thought it was K-Ci singing when it was Dave. At that time, they had a similar tone and sound. Still one of my favorite joints til' this day. Dave did say in an interview that at one point he was suppose to be in the group with Jodeci and he helped do some backgrounds on their first album. Would've been dope if he was in the group, that sound would've been otherworldly. They already had a unique sound; in my opinion it would've been even better with him in the group. Those live harmonies would've been tighter. But, we know things happen for a reason, I'm glad Dave did his own thing. He's one of my vocal heroes...ha!
@@chrisstinson5570 When I first heard it I didn't either, I automatically liked it because I thought it was K-Ci. When I found out it was Dave I said to myself, "he sounds like K-Ci on that record." Then later on I found out that they were cousins and then it all made sense...lol!
That whole show (Uptown MTV Unplugged) was fire! Mary J. Bilge, Jodeci, Christopher Williams, Heavy D & the Boyz and Father MC. 🔥❤️🔥🔥❤️🔥🔥❤️🔥🔥❤️🔥🔥❤️🔥
They sounded incredible together. It would have been amazing to see where their voices would have taken them in joint albums. Like Marvin and Tammy or Ashford and Simpson
My baby Mary j Blige had plans back then you here out of all the abuse her music out way all tht pain especially in her face she was wearing tht pain but came up out of tht tunol and look at her now all i want really want is to be Happy and tht she is Mary Mary im a big fan of yours to get to the good we got to go through the bad...and Mary J is the illest from her Journey Amen
Memories of being young just like these two. Life throws curve balls and you either lay down or you keep it moving. Proud of them both there at least cordial I hope.
They were a vocal powerhouse like they both could really sing like how Whitney and Bobby on we got something in common this music just takes you back to the good old days we can say.
