No reason to lie, I call her Miss Mary too. There's just something so real and honest about her gift. Tough time or not, I kinda like this time in her career. The grit is just oooooo!!
The Boy Is Mine era is Monica's best era when talking about vocals. Her vocals were clean, clear, and precise. If only Monica had a better team behind her. Monica should have been a major pop star.
I agree. Her acting all ghetto and gangster act on versus was a stunt. Monica has class and should roll with that. Had she had more support I suppose she’d be known even the more to this generation. Her voice is beautiful
Monica was a major pop star. She had 3 number 1s and a slew of Top 10s. I think for a Black Artist to be a huge Pop Super Star they have to be extremely talented and work very very hard. I just don't think Monica has that work ethic. Look at Whitney, Rihanna, Janet, Beyonce. The number of projects they produced was astonishing.
@@brucep9393 Monica was not a huge pop star. Majority of her success came from one album and then she fizzled out. The problem was Monica did not want to make pop records. She wanted to do solely r&b music. Which explains her decline after The Boy Is Mine. She had success with After The Storm but nothing to the degree of The Boy Is Mine. I do agree with poor work ethic. Monica has never even headlined a major tour in her name. I think Monica is just comfortable making music and going home. She doesn't seek fame or big records.
LMAO. Only in the 90s could you get away with wearing big-ass paparazzi shades after the sun done went down ---- INSIDE at that ---and pass it off as a fashion statement
There is alot of thoughts runs through my mind in why my sister felt the need to wear the shades. My sister always done that when that fool she was with hit her
Go listen to Monica's albums so y'all can stop acting surprised by her vocals. Also, go watch her performances. The girl has ALWAYS had amazing vocals.
Mary’s voice is like no other!! Can’t be compared - I’ll wait. Yea it’s an argument LOL I absolutely love her voice and the truth and experience she puts behind her singing. ♥️♥️♥️🥰
Monica’s beautiful notes and Mary’s raspy emotional notes were such a great combo on this performance 😍👏🏾 ... its an amazing song and you can tel Monica was loving how mica was going off on the mic 🔥
I couldn't tell you how many times I've seen this, and every time it reminds me how awesome Mary J is. I believe she is a voice not to be soon forgotten and I'll go further to say that I think her best is yet to come. She will be up there with the iconic voice like Etta.
+Sam Pottorff Yes and no. Non blacks sing gospel, and they are not necessarily soulful. I hear what you are saying in terms of some black singers. The gospel is the "good news" in song or spoken that should come from the soul regardless of the person.
well, who’s the living legend? mary j blige. who’s still a mainstream A list star? mary j blige💁🏽♂️ who sold more records and had more hits and is represented by several peers in the industry of different genres? BOOM! MARY JANE BLIGE!!👏🏽👏🏽👏🏽👏🏽👏🏽🙌🏽
Chills FREAKIN' chills! I must say, Monica surprised me. In the beginning, it seemed a bit off, but once Marry started, they both KILLED it! Mary has that raspy soulful voice and Monica has a younger, sweet soulful voice. A GREAT combo! Dorothy Moore is the Queen, but I have to give it up to them, I LOVE this cover... most of the time I hate covers, but THIS...YES, THIS!!!
@@appetite4chic878Monica didn't cover that song. Actually her song "Everything To Me" used "Silly" by Denice as a template for her song but it wasn't a cover because it's a different song with completely different lyrics.
I can't help but love them both..... Their honesty just and realness comes through their performances, voices, and personalities. I love down to earth people. A fan from day one of both Mary and Monica. Who needs auto tune, when your voice does what it's suppose to do?
MONICA IS A CLASS ACT NOT ONLY IS SHE A VERSITIAL ATRIST SHE HAS AN OL SOUL, THAT SHE PICKED UP ON HER DAD SIDE OF THE FAMILY FROM HER AUNTIES THATS WHERE SHE GETS THAT OL SCHOOL R&B SOUL FROM ,HER TONE IS UNMATCHED ,HER VIRIBTO SHOULD BE ONE OF THE WORLDS SEVEN WONDERS,AND RAWNESS ,HER FALLSETTO IS THE SH..T!!!THIS YEAR COMING 2024 IT WILL BE 29 YEARS IN THE GAMES SHE'S NOT HOLLOYWOOD KISS AZZ AND SHE HAS NOT SOUL HER SOUL 2024 QUEEN IS GOING TO SET IT ON FIRE TEAM MO!!!
Two of the best female singers of our era period.monica and mary smashed this to pieces no doubt about.vocals were razy it sends chills through my spine.
I ABSOLUTELY LOVE ME SOME MARY J BLIGE!!! CAN YOU SAY BIGGEST FAN EVER SAW HER IN CONCERT IN ATL I WAS FRONT AND CENTER JUST 3 ROWS BACL STANDING AND SINGING RIGHT ALONG, PROBABLY PISSED A BUNCH OF FOLKS OFF ALL I CAN SAY IS SORRY BUT NOT
Wow. ! This is probably my all time favourite record. I love the Dorothy Moore version. She sings it so beautifully and the song often brings me to tears. I had never heard this version but it is sung beautifully aswell. Sends shivers down me. ! Beautiful song. I think Dorothy's version you can't beat but this comes a close second. Beautiful!
I could here Whitney in both of them!!! Sometimes Whitney's voice was crystal clear and perfect and other times is was soulful and raspy!! That's why Whitney was so different, she had what two singers had in one.
Monica blew and u can tell pay attention to Mary I love dem both!!stop playing Monica her voice is clear Mary on the other hand has soul and wisdom she played it safe Monica actually made her sang!
Monica covered this song on her sophmore album "The Boy Is Mine". Her rendition is better than Dorothy Moore's original version. Monica's vocal technique gave new life to the song and expressed the meaning of the words better. The song was never released but it showcased her amazing vocal ability as an young teen..
I know your comment is 3 years old but I still had to correct you on your insane comment. Monica did great on this song. But her rendition is no where and I mean NO WHERE CLOSE to Dorothy Moore's version. You would have had to been alive in 1976 to understand that. So if it makes you feel any better or if it helps you sleep better at night, keep on believing your statement. But grown people know better 😉
Ap1ist ummm no.... Monica can sing but not a better singer. The type of song best fits Mary's voice. More soul and feeling, people can relate to the deeper voice
As a fan of both ladies, I can honestly say all of you are missing this. Monica is a better singer, but Mary has a certain feeling that just can't be matched. It's that feeling that grabs you. Whether the clapping was real or not, real audiences would have clapped at that moment. Again I'm a fan of both. There's a feeling that very few artists have that just connects with your soul more than others. (example: Aretha, Stevie, and if you listen closely, Stephen Marley. There are others) That feeling is the single biggest reason, Mary is remembered more than Monica. (really wish Monica got more recognition though.)
OMGGGGG!!!! why didn't I know about this performance.... this has me almost in tears..... this was back when Mary was still on drugs and was really singing her ass off👏👏👏👏👏👏❤❤❤❤❤❤❤ Love these two!!!
