Whitney was the one who really put her on the map of mainstream success. Mary J Blige said that herself in 2001 when Whitney got the first lifetime achievement award. When Whitney invited her on stage to do a duet with her in 99 at the VH1 divas, that catapulted Mary and gave her opportunities she never had before. Ppl don’t realize how much power Whitney’s name had. Whitney would be proud of Mary now.

@@2020TYBO well let’s put it like this…when Whitney came out in the late 80’s she was the only new brown girl who was singing pop songs with amazing vocals, after she came out labels for the first time started signing more black girls! Whitney did bust down the door…if you notice now that she has been gone, there was a complete drought of black female singers for at least a decade! It’s starting to come back now but very slowly!

And always spoke highly of her on camera she then invited her yo divas live 99 which put Mary in different ppls eyes. I am with you. She has grown so much. I remember when artist like Ashanti and Keyshia Cole were trying to give Mary, her flowers in the early 2000's and she wouldn't take them. She even said on 106 Park one time for people to stop referring to her as that because in her mind that throne belonged to Aretha Franklin. She didn't understand that to those 80's and 90's babies that grew up listening to her, she is our Aretha. I am so glad she is accepting that love. She deserves it!
