Duke Ellington said of Mary Lou Williams: “She has always been just a little bit ahead. She is like soul on soul.” That is a concise summation of a woman who is probably the best known and one of the most influential female jazz musician in the first decades of jazz, Mary Lou racked up a consistent track record of ‘firsts’ as pianist, composer and mentor to generations of musicians. She endured and thrived during times when the deck was stacked against her as a black woman (even more than now), and near the end of her long and impactful career, she said simply: “I did it, didn’t I? Through muck and mud.”

The RU-vid channel, Catholic Culture, has a long and satisfying interview with the Williams biographer, Deanna Witkowski. Also, there was and probably still is a priceless bit of video from 1973 on RU-vid. It's Mary Lou Williams as a guest of MisterRogers.

Mr. Rogers learns about scat. Listening to him interview Mary Lou and Milton Suggs, everyone turns into a child when they speak to Mr. Rogers. ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-gjM63eZmsao.html

Good evening ^^ I was curious about "12 clouds of joy", so I searched on RU-vid. It sounded like a mix of ragtime, blues and Dixie. It was a new discovery for me to be evaluated by the Kansas City Band where Charlie Parker and fats navarro were. ^^ Mary Lou's activities after the age of 40 seem to have changed, but I'm sure her music hasn't changed to something that makes you feel the good old days, right? Thank you again for your wonderful Jazz History.

I'm doing a research paper for my Jazz History course about Mary Lou Williams impact on the male-dominated jazz world and this was great research starter for me. Thank you!

My favorite Mary Lou Williams piece is Scratchin' in the Gravel, but this is one of the few Mary Lou Williams pieces which I would prefer to hear played by someone else, in this case, Marian McPartland.
