Mary Lou Williams was one of the most innovative, creative, groundbreaking musicians in the history of jazz. She was a brilliant and prolific composer and uniquely gifted pianist whose influence spans nearly the entire timeline of jazz music, but her name is almost never listed among the “giants of jazz.” Although prejudice kept her from achieving the recognition and fame she deserved during her lifetime, her contributions cement her legacy as a true pioneer of American music.

Wow. This is an amazing introduction to the life and contributions of Mary Lou Williams. It's added another layer to my very limited understanding, but great, and increasing admiration for this luminous musician. It's very sad that her status as a woman prevented her from being recognized at a broader level, but anyone with half an ear (like me) would be stopped in their tracks after hearing her perform. I was only introduced to her a few months ago, and I've been fascinated and intrigued by her story and her music ever since. She is one of my heroes now, right up there with Thelonious Monk and Louis Armstrong. I'm looking forward to learning more about her music and her life, and hoping that her story can inform my own small journey in music. Thanks so much.
