And that's what made it all the more worth it Mr. van Dyke to make his appearance, betting that at least 90% of that audience watched Mary Poppins as a kid!
The man is a legend! Anyone raised with the classic Disney movies knows him. I started crying when he came on stage and I’m in my early 30’s , as did my mother who is in her 60’s.
If you look closely you can see he is dancing a little behind the doors since his shadow is moving in time with the song. AS well how he was looked after when he did dance with one of guys behind him as i did see him stumble a little but hey he is almost 100
The instant those doors opened and Van Dyke appeared? Not one person in the theater remained seated. Full house standing ovation! Respect for an Artist who has definitely earned it.
I can just imagine the management when they were planning this "well....thats going to be a stand-oh for sure.....better plan for at least three minutes of people absolutely losing their shit"
“When they tell you that you’re finished and your chance to dance is done, that’s the time to stand, and strike up the band, and tell them you’ve just begun!!!!!!!” -Dick Van Dyke
I swear, he's going to live until he looks like Mr. Dawes Sr in Mary Poppins.........and he'll still be dancing!!! DVanDyke is an example that we should all strive to follow. He's going to be 97 this year, and he still embodies the youthful spirit he's always had......
There are two other instances of this degree of amazement and love that I can remember seeing on RU-vid, one of which involves Dick Van Dyke, and another his co-star in _Mary Poppins_ . I'll start with the other one that Van Dyke was dancing in, the "Red Shoes" number in Night of 100 Stars, when, at the end, after all these other dazzling dancing legends have performed, Van Dyke returns to dance with Ginger Rogers down the line of other stars. The moment Rogers appears, you can hear the gasps, screams and wild applause in the audience. The other was Julie Andrews' appearance on stage at the Oscars after Lady Gaga's breathtaking performance of her _Sound of Music_ medley. The audience was already overwhelmed by the unexpected skill of Gaga with that kind of music and then on to the stage from the wings steps Julie Andrews. In both cases, this is not chopped liver being overwhelmed with emotion in the audience. The Oscars are attended mostly by people, mostly famous people, in the business, particularly in the orchestra section of the theater shown on TV. A gala charity event is attended by people who can afford tickets to gala charity events. Nonetheless, they were awestruck. Thanks for sharing this with us.
When he came out I thought there's no way he's going to start dancing... and he did!!! He's still an amazing dancer after all these years and he never fails to surprise us! I love this man!!
Dick has said even today at 95 years old that he is still able to do every dance he ever performed both on film and stage, with the sole exception of "Me Ol' Bamboo", which he could barely do then.
Me Ol' Bamboo is a hard dance. But then again, the chimney sweep dancing in Mary Poppins looked highly complicated too partly due to the timing your own dancing with the other dancers
I love the audience reaction. He did not ave to do anything other than step on the stage. Plus in his nineties and doing those dance moves. Love Derek Hough too
I’ve rarely seen a more thunderous reaction from an audience all of a sudden. Even I got chills when I saw him show up and the crowd went absolutely insane. Let’s give our legends their honor while they’re here with us. 👏
And to think that the young people in the audience were just toddlers when Mary Poppins aired. And for them to react the way is simply unbelievable. These were the types of shows of my generation and they have become timeless. Got goose bumps watching specially for Dick Van Dyke showing up.
I don't want to be cynical about this, since I used to love Mary Poppins but....all the people " jumping out of their seats" look young as hell and therefore planted, by whatever marketing company was hired for this show. I am sure they didn't even know who Dick was. It looked so fake :(
@@Yaya-ug8qp I think most folks KNOW he played in Marry Poppins. He also STARRED in Diagnosis Murder for years. And he has been in DOZENS OF movies and tv guest stars. I liked him in Columbo.
When he did his cameo appearance in Mary Poppins returns. I said that's the true meaning of Disney. seeing something you would never believe in a million years. When you know people half or a quarter of his age who can't do that.
This video never fails to make me happy. I’ve watched it a few times since finding it and I always get goosebumps and teary eyes when he comes out. The love from the audience for him is wonderful to see.
I don't think I have ever seen an audience reaction as enthusiastically deserved as this. People were losing their minds when he came out. But when he not only started dancing, but was able to "step in time" with dancers 70 YEARS younger, forget it. Doesn't matter what he show was for, who was honoring what. That became the Dick Van Dye show ( catchy name... maybe they could..... nah)
Nothing pleases me more than to see this legend treated with such respect and the people recognizing him and going crazy for him! Plus, he can still dance a little bit there! Too awesome! Bless you Dick! May you cut a rug for many, many more years!
@@cranberry63 “gets a pass”?? Why would you even bother to point out that he was “wasn’t quite as spry”? The man was 92 for heaven’s sake!!! Of course he wasn’t as spry! He’s a legend who certainly doesn’t need a “pass” from you or anyone else. That was a passive aggressive and unnecessary comment.
Absolutely! Then I started happy crying and had to rewatch the video so I could actually see him. What a treat it would have been to be in the audience!
What a wonderful musical number just to begin with but to have Dick Van Dyke join in brought tears to my eyes. The crowd’s reaction is so in keeping with the moment! The man is in his nineties for crying out loud!
I agree reminded me of watching mary poppins for the first time over 35 years ago. And to see he has the same infectious still dances is simply amazing
Just incredible. Not only that this 95-year-old man can still have such presence on stage, but that his work is still so loved by and relevant to people who are young enough to be his great-grandchildren.
FYI this was from the TV special "The Wonderful World of Disney: Disneyland 60" that aired in 2016. Dick Van Dyke was 90 years old at the time. (he also just turned 97 which is crazy to think about!!)
Dick Van Dyke @Therealmrvandy is a national treasure in so many ways. To anyone who thinks that the dancers felt 'robbed of their applause' you obviously didn't finish watching the video. All of the dancers are smiling and applauding Mr. Van Dyke. Anytime you get to meet, let alone work with a legend in your profession even for a day, is pure magic. Everyone of these dancers will forever talk about the night they got to dance in Mary Poppins with Dick Van Dyke. Pure joy...
He said a year later he can do every dance step from every musical he ever did... except me ole bamboo. He could barely do that then. He proved it here.
Most 90+ year olds; ohhhh, my aching body! Have you seen my cane? I need a nap. Dick Van Dyke; Old Age, I don't have time for you! I gotta dance the Step in Time sequence again like I'm in my 30s and show these youngsters how it's done!!! Absolute legend!
Then I gotta dance on a table in Mary Poppins Returns and be a creative consultant on Wandavision. The fact that the man is healthy enough both physically and mentally to dance around like that and help recreate the feel of a TV show he did 61 years ago with perfect recall and memory is just amazing
I knew he was going to show up ( obviously from the video title) but I still got goosebumps and started crying when he came on stage. What an absolute legend! I would have loved to be in the audience for that. I’m so glad he got the response from the audience that he did!
Dick Van Dyke is the living embodiment of the saying “Age is just a state of mind.” Man is damn near a century and still kicking like he’s in the prime of his life
Very few people can become a legend in their own time. Dick Van Dyke is one of those people. He's a legend now, and he'll be a legend long after he's gone.
It’s so great that he’s able to still dance considering during filming Chitty Chitty Bang Bang, he injured himself and his doctor told him that parts of his body had arthritis and he’s need a cane. Dick defied the odds and showed everyone dancing in Mary Poppins Returns as well
Production: Ok sir. We respect you and your legacy, so we are going to bring you out as tribute. But we know it's been a long time so no need to dance Dick Van Dyke: Hold my chimney sweeper
Derek Hough is such a very talented performer. I would consider him to be following in Dick Van Dyke's footsteps. Amd watching DVD up there dancing like he's not in his 90's took my breath away! A true icon.
@@marcusblackwell2372 exactly. My wife, who is Filipino, started crying when she saw him unmasked on "The Masked Singer" (which brought us to this clip). She's only 38 but still cherishes DVD and all he's done.
I felt like a 9 year old again when I watched this, tears rolling down my cheeks and getting the biggest goosebumps when he started tap dancing. There will never be another Dick Van Dyke. A true national treasure.
If I was there in the audience, I would cheer with the rest of them. And when it's over, I would stand up, applaud and go Whoo! Dick may be over 90 years old, but he's still got that energy. He really is a legend.
There are some people that I wish could live forever. Dick van Dyke is one and Betty White was another. Both were such a wonderful part of my childhood TV experience.
For a man who is 97 years old he looks great! And is still able to move with no problem at all! I don’t know how he does it but he should dam sure keep doing it!
