lets be honest. We used to spend more time with your coworkers than you own families. Now that some of us can work from home and still produce the sane outcome of productivity, there is no reason to come into the office. It has to be meaningful. This CEO mindset is having the power dynamic in real time instead of over a screen that's pretty much it,

As a woman who was s-xually touched at my previous job… I feel much safer and happier working at home. Unless, employers plan on paying higher wages to (at least), even out the difference for transportation cost and vehicle maintenance-Im not interested in their take.

If you're going to expect people to commute to the office when it's shown that they do not need to in order to do their job then you should have to pay them for that extra time and wear on their vehicle as well.

I suffered bullying in the office setting. Being bullied by my supervisor and the higher ups doing nothing about it. That did more to my mental health then being able to work from the comfort of home. On top of that, the organization that it happened in does not have to pay my therapy bills. I have seen and experienced more damage to mental health within the office setting opposed to working at home where I can take much needed breaks, have music or a podcast playing in the background while I work and spend vital time needed with those I love. At home I do not have to worry about gossip, catty behavior, and a bunch of hire ups that do nothing but harass their workers. Make that make sense.

My wife just left a job because of the very reasons you’ve mentioned and I myself have copped a fair amount of abuse from managers as well. The fact that the these people’s lives are so vapid and pointless they find meaning in small talk is extremely revealing.

@@titovalasques I’m so sorry that you and your wife had to go through that. I would not wish it on anyone. Being bullied in the workplace is actually more common then most people think. A lot of us do not talk about it or think it is normal. Hearing these two talk about offices as though they are a place of “sanctuary” just shows how out of touch they are with reality.

This seems to happen everywhere because we’re being led by money centric culture that’s willing to sacrifice everyone and everything for materialistic gain instead of focusing on things that are actually important like family, friends, animal companions, emotional and personal development, creative pursuits and nature.

That's the thing about the workplace pretty much anywhere not just the office, higher-ups, and human resources don't care about a problem until it gets so big that they can't deal with it or simply don't care enough to take care of it, and you have to worry that you may not be apart of a click in the office that they set you up to fail.

why do we need to come into the office for social reasons. I have my own friends my own life and my own family. A job is a job, a career is dead now adays so why should i care about people who wouldnt care about me? Why should i wake up 2 hours earlier than i need to so i can go somewhere to do my work. sure if you have a job that requires you to be there in person i understand but 90% of people could work remote as all they need is a laptop. fuck going back to the office if you dont want to.

I have adhd and an being in the office is probably the worst place for me to conduct work, at home I can stimulate myself however I feel fit, maybe laying outside while I work or pacing or whatever, I am a more productive employee solely because I have the freedom to stand up from my desk.

Some of us also suffer from mental disorders where being in an office can be more harmful to us then staying at home and working (PTSD ANYONE?) This is all about "property values", they need workers in their buildings to justify their expenses. Guess I've not been human for 8 years since I started my home based business. IDK...

We used to need the office because our internet connection is slow (or non existent depending on your generation). But it’s 2021 now, even 3rd world countries could thrive on zoom

Any work that can be done from home should be done from home. The default should be work from home. Period. End of story. It's better for the environment and better for everyone's well being. If you have an issue with this it should force you into your therapist's office where you can discuss the source of your need for control. This will be healthy for you. Ergo it is healthier for everyone to have home work be the default mode and office work be the exception only when absolutely necessary. Or for those who really need it to thrive. Give those folks an option. But don't default to office work. Default to home work.

Hey Mary - I appreciate your perspective here, but you seem to be unwilling to appreciate others. I do not want to commute. Ever. I've actually moved pre-covid to a place where I can walk to work and pay a pretty enormous premium for that privilege. Sitting in the car is never relaxing - it's always stressful. I also don't want to make small talk. I'm an introverted person who works on an introverted team, the great majority of whom would rather not talk to anyone about anything that's not directly related to the problems at hand. I see this a lot in the Extroverted population, where they assume everyone wants to operate like they do. That's really not the case. I don't want anything to do with an office if I can help it and I'd appreciate it if you don't spend your time trying to enforce your will on a group that might not be that interested in it.

True, working in an office was not the life I wanted and wasn't true to me. Working remotely is very true to me. I can collaborate with anyone in my instantly. Face to face via Teams even sharing your desktop. You can't do that in a conference room. Working in an office or remotely have their advantages and disadvantages and is very dependant on the job role. The job of the CEO is to encourage their employee to be the best that they can be. This in turn creates an environment where the corporation strives.

It's quite ironic to see people who value their freedom think they are somehow entitled to tell others what they think they need. The pandemic made it clear who the parasites of society are and what the 'E' actually stands for in CEO (exploitation). How many CEOs hid like cowards while sending essential workers getting paid starvation wages (inexcusable in this day and age) to their deaths? How many CEOs begged their governments for "bailouts" because profits were spent on share buybacks or luxury items that should never exist in a world when children go hungry or are enslaved by filthy billionaire parasites like Epstein and his "friends"? Dan Price, the only CEO I have an ounce of respect for, has proven that paying every singe employee a livable wage is a pretty low bar to set. Especially when benefits of doing so have a much larger positive impact where the quality of life goes up for everyone. So why do other CEOs struggle with the concept of paying a livable wage?

What an awesome interview. Stellar. One thing for remote work is that us introverts do not thrive in person in offices, so working at home has been a life saver. Our mental wellbeing is compromised in offices. And let's not underestimate the ability of introverts to build community and connection online. Social anxiety in person is a thing and it is not a good experience. So you can't have a one size fits all solution. Balance and flexibility is the key.

I completely sympathise with you, but I do wonder is it healthy to continue to isolate yourself as an introvert. Also how real and tangible are those online connections? Isn't the whole point of our lives to try to overcome the things that are holding us back... social anxiety being one of them. I speak from experience.

I agree. I now work from home as a designer and it's changed my life for the better. I was able to move city, finally live with my partner, get away from the office environment that was suffocating me. I get my social interactions from other places. I get it from my local towns, from going to a cafe to work, I now live in the countryside so I have natural beauty all around me. Thankfully my workplace has agreed to two days a month in the office and that's great. Perhaps if I had stronger connections to my colleagues I'd feel differently, but I don't, my connections are elsewhere. If I was told I had to work from the office full time again I would quit. My mental health has never been better. I never felt I could truly be myself in an office environment. Also as a creative I feel I have that time and space and freedom to explore that was not happening in the office. So I agree remote working has also been a life saver for me. I think you have to approach working from home much differently to working in an office though. I personally don't have a rigid structure which helps me work better as it suits my personality and working styles.

Maybe both of you don’t get excited because you have so much possibilities with your money and with your life and you already done so much that it is your new normal, but your friend is excited for a dinner because it’s special to them, but then if you get unlimited money you go to dinner every night and its fun but not exciting anymore. So the next step for you its maybe going on the moon (lol) so THAT will excite you because YOU are at this level vs your friends, you have to raise the bar everytime

So presumptuous to speak for everyone that NEEDS to commute and come to the office just to waste time doing water cooler talk and just because she feels like it is amazing... Here is the problem as i see it with work from office - 1. If you work with a fabulous group of people and love or at least enjoy your job then it stands to reason you would be happy to go back. 2. If you work with a terrible group of people and you hate your work or you love your work but hate your co-workers then why would you want to go back to an office - to be miserable? In many instances where work is hard to come by its not always easy to leave a terrible work situation so if you do come to this comment from the point of perspective of someone with a wonderful job and lovely colleagues I am genuinely happy for you but please spare a thought for people not as fortunate as you.

The last thing some of us need is a dog in the office. Can't remote work, so have to come in to a office with screaming babies (real babies not grown adults acting like babies), then sneeze all day and feel like shit because you're allergic to dogs. Bad enough when I have to sit next to the cat lady, you know the one, the one who has 2+ cats and doesn't clean the litter box enough and doesn't wash their clothes.

I worked as a kindergarten teacher for 5 years.I left that career and moved to office work because I was no longer able to do the emotional labor of listening to someone else child screen all day

This is moronic. People aren’t human if they’re not in the office. Ok I guess all those people in India you outsourced the jobs too are not human bc they’re not in my office. You people are really drinking this koolaid? We’re a family and going to the office makes us human? Ask your work family/ work dad or mom (boss) when they outsource your job if they’ll still send you alimony. Will they still help you pay the rent after you’re outsourced or fired?? No they will fire you and send you off to starve. I don’t need a ceo to worry about my mental health, I’ll get professional help if I need it thank you.

The question about excitement was really perceptive and I could completely relate to the sentiment! Was so nice to finally hear someone else describe this because I've also never felt excitement. I'd attribute it to the 'novelty wearing off' saying, as once you've accumulated enough unique experiences there's only so much more that could possibly excite you. However as Mary experienced, I too have also felt that surge of pure unadulterated joy. Again it has been during the most simplest of moments. Anyways great podcast yet again!

I’m going through a horrible breakup with the father of my child at the minute and I just feel like watching all of these people talk about their lives in such positive ways despite what has gone on in their lives is really spurring me on. Regarding the wfh or the office discussion it comes down to personality types. Extroverts love the office and introverts prefer their homes. But it's exactly as Mary says, we as a society need a balance as with just about everything!

I don't think extroverts would mind being 'forced' back to the office whereas the introverts will be more concerned about going back. There is more research coming out now that the lockdowns and isolation of people is causing significant problems and suffering. Again a balance or hybrid model where we can be in the office and also at home seems to be the best option. It may very well come down to businesses 'forcing' their employees back. I don't agree that Gov should get involved because all Gov is incompetent.

I totally relate to her when she talks about her business when covid hit and how it turned her world upside down. I felt the exact same and the exact same happened to us. One of my favourites of these podcasts. I whole heartedly agree with her opinion on coming into the office to interact and work as a team with other people. My mental health has taken a huge crash working from home and I look back in envy of working and building relationships with my work colleagues. If you don't want to go into the office at least a few times a week then are you working for the right company? When we have 60 year olds with such a vast amount of life experience, we should probably admit to ourselves that they are more likely going to be right than wrong.

Thank you for yet another great episode. I am finding it difficult to recommend 1 episode, so great job! I just realized that the reason that led me to emigrate was the possibility to be truthful to myself everyday, at least in those things I think I know about myself. Spirituality and the human being as a whole was completely out of the scenario in my professional life and I don't want to go back to that anymore. I identified the most with Mary when she said that she has no regrets or resentments. I am not there yet, but I will get there! Let's spread the message!
