It really is a terrific opening sequence, and demonstrates the foresight of Mary Shelley to predict the Arctic fever that would catch the imagination of explorers in the early 19th Century onward. Makes me wonder how far the fictional Robert Walton, Victor Frankenstein, and his creation penetrated into the Arctic. In 1794, the farthest north record stood somewhere slightly above 81º N latitude, the pole itself not being reached undisputedly for another 132 years by the Amundsen-Ellsworth Expedition in the airship Norge. It's unlikely Walton could have ever made it there in that era, and all the better he should run into Frankenstein so that he could turn around and certainly save the lives of his crew from an ill-prepared enterprise and almost certain doom.
