I'm only a fan of yourself, however I always interpreted the scene where Margaret died in milk as more symbolic of her cause of death. Back then "consumption" (if I remember that's what they said was her cause of death) could have been passed through unhygienic living and contaminated milk! Anyway that's the link I made. Although again I'm no media expert.

The Tudors has a super special place in my heart! Came out at just the right time with several of my all time fave actors I grew up with (Jonny Rhys Meyers, Jeremy Northam, Sam Neill?! ALL ⭐️⭐️⭐️!! It gets a far worse rap than it deserves. This show did not set out to create a documentary, it’s showtime people. However the shows creator Michael Hirst is someone who understands that one has to know the rules in order to break them - he understood the assignment. It really captures the essence / spirit of these characters I had spent my entire youth reading about - bringing them alive and into a way my brain could really relate to as a 20 year old in the modern world…looking at one Holbein portrait over and over to envision their features … and this show happened to bring them to life brilliantly. The drama was hilarious, and just that - drama to serve the narrative and intertwined fiction to appease a wide range of people (Tallis and Compton gay lovers?! I dig!)… that is how historical drama works… fiction is the best gateway drug to actual history no one can attest to this better than me, I became a 16C historian because of this show! So no one can truly say it doesn’t have some sort of heart to it… I’m not alone in this sentiment either! I’ve met others around my age who have had similar Experiences- that’s fun and totally worth celebrating! The rest is just fun to serve the greater story for the 21st century screen, it’s like, lighten up ya know? Anything that turns people onto history is worth celebrating… it’s also of no comparison whatsoever to the soap opera, lowly produced style of Reign or those Starz “White” Gregory based series! The Tudors was well researched and used their massive budget wisely the core of their performances and stories fleshed out. I’m also always baffled at the popular objection over “all the sex”?! To be fair, it was primarily the marketing (genius), in the pilot & usually the series ironically objectified the male actors rather than the women which was unusual for the mid 00s. The Tudors was in on the joke, and that is something the series and it’s creators hardly get credit for.

I watched the Tudors during the pandemic while I was in the middle of a deep dive into the War of the Roses & Tudor history. This also happens to be my favorite era in history. The show was...entertaining. But did an absolute hatchet job on history and was (in my opinion) barely concealed pornography. But I also realized it was not meant to be historical.

So, I understand why they made her marry the king of Portugal instead of France like reality. They moved the timeline, and already had shown her ACTUAL husband's son-in-law as the current king of France. Now, this obviously could have been avoided by keeping to the timeline, but I understand why it was done given that they'd already shown the Field of Cloth of Gold

@@wednesdayschild3627 do you mean to say that henry didnt really see anne as a royal? (because i know i dont, i see her as raised by the king,) he saw catherine as a royal for obvious reasons, but are we speculating that he really pushed for annes ultimate downfall because she actually, by blood birth, was not a royal? i have wondered this myself, because he only executed the 2 queens of low-birth as compared to the queens of royal birth like catherine of aragon or anne of cleves- you cant touch a lady who has a whole royal house behind her in her native country. but anne boelyn? toast. she had no international family to defend her. i think thats perhaps why henry was able to do away -specifically- with her the way he did, yet he "allowed" for his other divorced royal-blood queens to merely "retire" to some other property.

Otherwise it helped turn people onto the Tudors craze, and as the daughter of a history professor, I knew the history, but the show helped me learn some new things and I went on to research it even more. Like it or not, many people are here bc they were turned onto the Anne Boleyn story from either the show, Phillipa Gregory's books, or some other modern discussion about the topic. I appreciate what they did right SO much. But how unbelievably frustrating that we could've had both Margaret and Mary Tudor, two incredibly interesting and intriguing plotlines... but instead we got some bastardization of both combined? And then throwing Portugal in the mix because you don't want to figure out France or Scotland within this weird his-sisters-aren't-married-yet by the time he's into Anne Boleyn timeline? It's one of my biggest frustrations with the show runners. And it's still one of my all-time favorites. It's just. Ugh. Please keep in mind that this was a series lent on entertainment not factual history. And for that it did dramatically and assumingely quite well. I'm gonna go with there really is no visual narrative with the blood & milk, only visual practicality with color contrast and fluid dynamics. Stage Blood, including the type one must hold in the mouth for coughing/spatter purposes, is often hard to see without intense flood lighting, particularly on a dark slate floor and everything has to be lit twice as bright for film anyway. You can even tell the lighting differences between shots of her entering a mostly fireplace lit room with one open window and way too bright moonlight coming through, then overwhelmingly down lit from a different angle and source after she collapses. It is visually and contextually beautiful though, I'll give the designers that. We are clearly meant to be focusing on her terrified death stare above all else. If I had to do the cinematography in this scene, I'd also probably look for and all around practical color contrast to make the blood pop so I didnt screw up the lighting designer's very dramatic effect just to make blood show up on camera against a dark floor or force the performer to hold/take more than she should or could. Do trust, when it comes to performing scenes like that, you want as few takes as possible. That shit is sticky for days if it gets too much air time. Some fake blood can also be mixed with 1% milk in the mouth to resemble bile, which TB did produce. All production teams always start with historical accuracy then they make adjustments, especially with film. They could have done a few takes with that and then saw that only the milk was reading to the camera on the floor but her face & gown are soaked in bright red; very confusing to the mind when you only have a few seconds to register the whole visual along with the context of the storyline. Add the popular lack of general knowledge about consumption/TB to a populace and now you may have to stretch a bit more - more blood, thicker, thinner, whatever- to make it clear in less than 1 second that she ain't comin back from this. I know most have issues with this series, particularly the Mary/Margaret combo, but I honestly don't have issue with the narrative devices of combining historical figures into one for a story. Knowing that the Arts are about interpretation not accuracy- adaption not translation -only makes me want to do the digging to learn about the real history even more because now I can truly appreciate the work that goes into the production as a whole. It's not easy making those choices. It's well known people have a hard time holding multiple characters and plotlines beyond 6-7 and, lets be fair, anyone turning to a late night Showtime drama in 2004 for a history lesson is probably gonna get Margaret & Mary confused/entangled anyway (unless, of course, one did nudity and the other didn't...it's Showtime in the early 2000s after all...you know why you're there and it's for their trademark erotica dramas...nothing wrong with that), especially confusing since another Princess Mary of long term relevance is already center stage. And let's also face the fact that that little girl is too precious for words so that's the Mary which will stick with the audience no matter how well or accurate it's written or performed. It's, honestly, one of the many moments in that show (which I do adore btw) that just scream what it meant to be a performer in the early 2000s for a company like Showtime. Could have been worse though. Coulda been Cinemax.

I love 'The Tudors' and its take on Henry VIII and his court. Yes it deviates from history a lot but I'd argue that's mainly in Season 1 and Seasons 2-4 are a lot more focused and stick closer to history. The Margaret Tudor storyline is just dumb, heck after she dies Margaret is never mentioned again and even in the finale Brandon says "I remember your Majesty's sister so well" He doesn't even refer to her by name! Mary was changed to Margaret as they didn't want to confuse her with Henry's daughter, but we can have 50 characters called Thomas am I right? Furthermore, in later seasons, Henry refers to the King of Scotland James V as his nephew, it's almost as if the series was retconning its own retcon of history! 🤣

I hate The Tudors for how it messed with history. The story of those times had enough drama without inventing it. But also, I hate how they created sympathy for Henry rather than telling the truth. They messed with the difference in ages between him and his wives, by making Katherine of Aragon older than she was and Henry younger, which made her look a bit like a cougar, when it was Henry who was marrying someone much younger when he married Anne Boleyn and especially Katherine Howard. In true history, the first husband of Mary ( Rose) Tudor was old king Luis of France, not king of Portugal 👑😊, poor Mary.... like a lot princesses....

I was always confused why they cast a nearly Forty year old woman to play an 18 year old. Not the actresses fault

I have been watching your videos for awhile now and I feel like it’s time to leave a comment. You have a way of making me feel like you are speaking to me, personally. Your phrase of “you’re welcome “, is one greeting I have not heard anywhere else. I find it a very warm greeting and I find it very touching. Your videos are not only entertaining but very informative and interesting. I want to thank you for sharing your knowledge with us and the way you present it. I am near 60 and have been interested in the Tudors and other royal families since I was in middle school. Thankfully, I have many videos, books and other information about the Tudor history that I have enjoyed immensely. I enjoy how you present your material very much and I want to thank you for sharing your knowledge and understanding of this most interesting subject!

The idea that viewers wouldn't be able to follow a story with multiple characters named the same is insulting. Firstly, those were real people whose stories we can already follow in a history class. Secondly, people will show as much smarts as is required of them, House of the Dragon, for example, half the names starts with Rhae* and other half rhymes 😂
