I had the pleasure of meeting Mary Tyler Moore along with her then husband Grant Tinker at the Plaza Hotel in 1971. It was during the second season run of her show. Both she and her husband, as well as the other guests were very kind to us. A treasured moment in my life. I’m glad she found happiness again in her life. ❤
Thank you so much for this moving interview🙏 I have shed tears upon receiving the saddening news about the demises of just two celebrities, Lucille Ball and Mary Tyler Moore😇😇
That Girl with Marlo Thomas as a independent single working girl was earlier than the MTM show. I loved them both & they inspired me to be able to experience being an independent working girl supporting myself & living in my own place. My daughter doing the same. I’m happily married 32 yrs without the regret of missing that experience.
You mention That Girl being in some ways a forerunner to MTM and the funny part about it is that while the writers of That Girl gave Ann Marie a steady boyfriend (played by Ted Bessell) from the very beginning of the series, the writers of MTM resisted doing that until near the end when they cast Bessell to be Mary's serious love interest.
I was about 9 when the MTM Show first aired. The image of a single, professional woman living alone on her own terms was impactful. We weren't shown many ways of "womaning" before that time.
I met Mary Tyler Moore when she came to Macy's Herald Square, where I was working at the time. My friend called me downstairs, but didn't tell me WHY! We were backstage at the event where she was appearing and when it was over, I was introduced... I was so flustered that I said, "It's such a pleasure to meet you Miss Petrie!" Well, she just laughed and shook my hand... I was so embarrassed. But, that's just the type of person she was, always so kind... And that Smile!!! 💗
This woman got me in trouble as a kid. Watching reruns at 2 in the morning and school the next day. And when I was in school working for the cable company in New York City. Got a chance to meet her at her apartment. She “IS” an incredible woman.
Yes, as if Mr. Grant is going to have a mini bar and fridge and all ingredients and utensils in the bottom drawer of his desk, ready to make the dessert cocktail of your choice, haha!
While I love Mary ,that has been told over and over about wearing pants, having a loving relationship with husband, kissing etc. but Lucille Bal in I Love Lucy wore pants. In fact if you watch many of the family sitcoms of the 50's so did other moms...Donna Reed for one.
3:31- Those tears when she broke down after telling the others 'Thank you for being my family'!' were for real! Perhaps one of the saddest ironies of her life was that her work family on 'MTM' seemed to have been much more loyal and supportive than her original family had been! Years later she admitted that, contrary to the media coverage at the time, she had NOT wanted to end the show but was essentially told to do it to better market the future syndication package by her then-husband Grant Tinker and the other MTM execs!
Reeeeeally? I’ve never heard that and I’m a HUGE MTM fan. Don’t believe it for a second and when you mention her “original” family, what exactly do you mean? Her parents, or which of her 3 Husbands? Or her Son who she basically ignored and shipped out to his father, her 1st husband, most of the time?
@@greeneyedwarlock882 Her parents. Her father was cold and critical towards her his entire life and her mother, among other things, accused her of lying about a family friend doing criminal actions to her. .when she was SIX!
@@wardarcade7452 I’ve never heard that about her father but I can believe it about her Mother because she was a stone cold Alcoholic. So much so that Mary had to be farmed out to her Grandparents and other family members on the weekends (I think) because she was literally incapable of taking care of her own children. Pathetic.
@@wardarcade7452 The "thank you for being my family" comment is very typical for these boards. Many people have no clue what the job of an actor is, why some people are expert at it, some are mediocre, and some can't do it at all.
No Jenna, Mary was not the first woman on TV to wear pants. Lucille Ball and Vivian Vance, for example, many times wore pants on "I Love Lucy." Mary, however, probably was the first woman to wear pants regularly, and the first to wear *form-fitting* pants, which was a bit controversial at the time, and I believe there was some deal where she was only allowed to wear pants in one scene per episode.
I love Mary Tyler Moore Show and she did do a lot for women but That Girl with Marlo Thomas was also revolutionary for women and it came first. I’m also pretty sure she wore pants.
It's amusing that these younger women think Mary was groundbreaking. Her character was just reflecting the times. Wearing pants to work was no big deal. Many women had careers, certainly jobs anyway. Mary was a beloved person and seemed very genuine and kind. That's a much better legacy than being "groundbreaking", which she was not.
Ahhhhhh.........just like the ONE AND ONLY QUEEN OF ROCK N' ROLL Tina Turner who just died 2 days ago, the EQUALLY ONE AND ONLY Marty Tyler Moore was an ICON of American Television and a ground breaker of immeasurable proportions. How many of us WISH WISH WISH we had a friend like Mary Richards did in Rhoda Morgenstern! Eternal blessings on Moore's fabulous heart, soul, career and legacy!!!
I love Mary Tyler Moore, but Marlo Thomas never gets credit for actually being the first career driven woman on That Girl, which first aired in 1966, 4 years before The Mary Tyler Moore Show. Maybe because she had a steady boyfriend caused her not to appear independent, I don't know, just saying.
MTM was not the first woman to wear pants on television. I distinctly remember Lucille Ball wearing pants on television before her. Lucille Ball was the biggest female force on television as a star and as an executive as she took over DesiLu after her divorce from Desi Arnaz.
@@barbarawebb7185 he was very introverted and studious. Never dated. He was in the engineering dorm and was overweight. Years later I saw him in NYC w Mary and said “Shelley!” Mary laughed and said “what is he saying, Robert?!” And S looked embarrassed and told Mary it was just a nickname.
"First woman on television to wear pants!" 😂 Fact check! Start with Katherine Hepburn ....... there were others. Google it 😉 Love Mary Tyler Moore's story. ❤
Levine said that when he met Mary, he didn't know she was a big star. He had been so busy he hadn't seen her TV show... you know, the one that ran seven years. Why is it some of the most wonderful, beloved female entertainers have poor judgment and abysmal taste in men?
@@stevekay1925 Not you, schmuck. Not that you'll comprehend this, but relationships that start off with fibs or full-blown lies aren't the cat's pajamas. Cardiology is an honorable profession, but it doesn't get you a palatial estate and a guaranteed huge inheritance later. The guy just plain looks creepy and sleazy. Tough toenails if somebody doesn't see things your way.
I stopped watching TV in 1990. I watch when in a hotel room or someone's. Yes, I understood at 26 years old that it was poison. I was tired of being "programmed". I knew mary Tyler Moore and many others from watching too much before I stopped watching.
Notice he doesn’t post. If you want know about her multimillionaire life , I will treat you fans to a McDonald breakfast to listen to her life style! 😫😫😎
Ok I'm a guy with a set of balls & I'm going to commit a terrible sin & go against the accepted norm. But you're gonna hear it & you're not gonna like it because nobody & I mean nobody wants to hear the truth. Career driven women has very much helped with the erosion of the family unit without a doubt. Not an opinion but a FACT!!!!! By the way I'm a big fan of MTM & her fantastic iconic show!!!!!
