Dick Van Dyke has to be one of the most genuine wholesome people in the history of entertainment. It's crazy that he struggled so much with alcoholism, overcame it, talked about it when nobody else did, and is STILL ALIVE today and worked into his 90s. Absolute hero, and a legend to boot.
I'm a long-time bachelorette, so I've often told people that the man I would love to marry is Rob Petrie. They always say, "Oh, you mean Dick Van Dyke?" I say no, Rob Petrie. I always thought Rob was the most perfect husband on television, so beautifully written by Carl Reiner. Yes, THAT's the man I would marry! But Dick, you're right up there too! :)
I recently started watching the Dick Van Dyke show in reruns on Decades. I think thelast time I watched ws probably reruns in the 70's. It still holds up comedically and socially.
@@plane_guy6051 They literally talked about it in this interview and Dick has ALWAYS been very open about his past struggles with alcohol. What in the hell kind of comment is that??? Nothing negative was said here......
Those two truly loved each other. They didn't have to be romantically involved, just look at their eyes - they adored each other. What a beautiful friendship.
Watching these two takes me back to a happier, simpler time. These are the people you want to live forever because the world is a little sadder place without them.
Their chemistry is amazing. They have a great relationship on screen as Rob and Laura, but it's so amazing to see that their love for each other was not artificial
I love them too and I just watched all 5 seasons on Netflix, all 5 seasons of 39 episodes each and I still laugh so hard and just smile while watching it. I actually own all 5 seasons on dvd, but it was easier to pull it up on Netflix.
Mary's voice is so sweet. When she speaks it makes my heart dance for joy!!!! God rest her soul. I always enjoyed it so much whenever she would say "Oh Rob" Lol!!!
These two are truly americas sweetharts forever. The undeniable chemistry and genuine love and support these two have for each other after all these years is heartwarming!
This was a joy to watch. Dick is still alive but sadly Mary has passed. There was genuine affection between them but also respect and professionalism. What a fun segment to watch 20 years after the fact. RIP MTM, best wish DVD.
@@joeblaumer2085 I may have thought the same thing, but we only picked up one channel where I lived if you turned the outside antenna just right, and Patty and Cathy were not on it.
What a GEM of an interview! I was struck by the humility and down-to-earth-ness of these two legends in their responses, and edified by how they each remained faithful to their wedding vows to their respective spouses when temptation was present. What a gift to have this interview. We love you DVD, and may you RIP MTM. Thank you for all you have given us!
Extraordinary people. I am impressed by their candor during this interview. They admitted their chemistry and sexual attraction but they honored their vows and didn't act on their feelings. In our world today, it seems if there is attraction, we act on our impulses. Bravo, MTM and DVD! RIP, MTM.
Mary Tyler Moore & Dick Van Dyke are American national treasures. Dick's smile is awesome & classic :) I'm reading Dick's book... 'My Lucky Life In And Out Of Show Business' He tells of taking his granddaughter to a restaurant for dinner, she is absolutely amazed that everyone recognizes him, knows him, asks for autographs. She asks grandpa Dick... "Are you special?" ... Dick says... "No more or less than anybody else" ... She says... "I want to be special someday too" ... Dick says... "You already are"
Oh My Goodness, who ever found this and posted it, I would like to thank you from the bottom of my heart. I grew up with these two absolutely beautiful entertainers and you have put me back into my childhood if only for a moment. And I love you for that! And the comments on here are delightful responses and I would love to agree that we are all better for living with Mary Tyler Moore on this Earth, God rest her soul, and the fabulous Dick Van Dyke who has graced us with his goofiness for many years, may they both live in eternity through our hearts.
While on a business trip down in the Los Angeles area, I was on my way to a business luncheon at the Perch LA rooftop restaurant, in the Pershing Square Building. I was escorted to the VIP elevator, and as I stepped in, I realized that the only other passenger was Dick Van Dyke. I smiled at him, and he gave me a very friendly grin. So I said, "Are you also heading up to the restaurant for that Board Meeting of Tam O'Shanter Ltd. of Scotland?" He laughed, and said, "Doggone, I love knowing there's still fans of the show who actually remember those details. Thank you for being that kind of fan." He's a genuinely nice guy, with a warmth, and an easy smile.
Two fabulous people. Gave so much of themselves and they made so many people happy. Both of the shows that bore their names were as good as it gets. What a joy to see them together.
And we still love them, not merely for their authentic manner of being themselves before the camera, but because of the wonderful people they seemed to truly be.
It is not possible for me to love another interview that Larry has done more than I love this interview. Two of my favorite actors on television with two of the most endearing shows ever made.
I had the privilege of seeing Mary in person at the SAG awards 2007 (she noticed I was having trouble with my camera and she stopped and posed for me) and I met Dick Van Dyke a few years ago. Two wonderful people!
I never seen this show, back in 1999, so I am very grateful to see these three people interacting, sharing memories and being so alive. Especially Mary and Dick, such love as performers share... We were blessed :)
In the middle of watching the whole Dick Van Dyke Series. Of course I started watching after Mary died. RIP MTM. God Bless these 2. They were absolutely amazing.
What a testament to the genius and sheer draw of the by-gone era of STARS. Watching a half hour interview from 20 years ago is infinitely more entertaining than the trash that passes as entertainment today. RIP to Mary and may Dick live 200 more years !!
Carl Reiner's writing. Indeed. Quite a guy, Mr. Reiner. Long has he reigned. I adore both of these wonderful gentlemen. Oh, and Mary too. 😊 💖 We miss you, Mare!
This was a wonderful interview, so much appreciation and respect for each other, it was beautiful, big fan of both Dick & Mary, may Mary RIP Dick is an amazing talent, love his smile 💜
I’ll always love them both! She was still so beautiful and he’s still so handsome. Classy people. RIP Mary Tyler Moore. Hope he will keep on working for a long time. ☺️😘💜💜
They both are such a class act their whole lives. Even more amazing that these two great people got their start together on the Dick Van Dyke show. I wish them all the happiness, they deserve it.
The last song Mary and Dick did made the interview so worth it. Two entertainment legends who got along together and made everyone happy in their work throughout the years was a privilege to see.
I love these two sooooo much.......loved both of their shows......they don't make comedies like that anymore........so sad that Mary is gone......Thankyou both for the memories....
i caught that, too! "My answer to your previous question." --MTM "Listen, Miss. Would you mind answering my questions in the order I give them!" --Lou Grant (paraphrasing as accurately as I remember it), on the Sep. 1970 debut of Mary's tv series
They are both loved very much! An amazing pair. Saw Dick in the 80's at a Cafe in Toronto. When he got up it looked like he was a puppet getting up.A true comedy genius. Both of them as well as being a dramatic actor and actress!
Dick was just so lovely and kind in this interview. His pipes are still so deeply resonant, and sonorous, without quite falling prey to stentorian. Burnished mahogany voice. True basso profundo. Mary was truly radiant here. Loved the fierce short hairdo, which looked spectacular whichever way she turned. What great chemistry they shared. Sad we lost her. What a talent. Glad we're getting to keep DVD a little bit longer. At least as of September 2019...
In the recent “Mary Poppins” he caused such great emotion! It was a joy to see him still in such good form. I wept when he came on. As for “Mary” I have such anger when I think how many diabetes and cancer patients have been neglected because of the attention paid to covid.
I love these two legendary icons. They were part of my life for many years on tv & the movies. Chitty chitty bang bang was so magical. Sadly MTM & King are no longer with us. When MTM passed I lost a huge chunk of my childhood & heart. DVDyke is 95 now. God Bless you Dick Van Dyke and thank you sir for all the memories 💖
Thank God for Nick @ night. I wasn't no ways near thought of when these shows came out. I loved these shows. I'm so glad that channel existed. I guess I was one of those kids, just the overall purpose of a show made me watch it again and again. RIP Mary the day you left us, it hurt me but I know you are in a better place. One love to you my dude Mr. Van Dyke,
"63... the answer to your previous question." A shortened reenactment of her job interview with Lou Grant in the first episode of *"Mary Tyler Moore Show".* Lou asked a succession of questions Mary found inappropriate and objected to, but which she answered only after he moved on to another question she liked even less. This so well replicated that scene, it seemed intentional, and was extremely well done, as impromptu as it was! The humor flew past Larry. :-D
What a wonderful interview. Wonderful, lovely people carry the day. Each arrived at a stage in life where they are wonderfully comfortable to be in their own skin and grateful to be alive.
What a great interview! The affection & respect between these two is obvious. No surprise to learn the Dick Van Dyke show had an extra-special atmosphere, which, if they'd done anything about their feelings for each other (as one caller enquired) would undoubtedly have been ruined. Yes, agree with previous comment: they are American national treasures.
That was a really fun interview. I enjoyed seeing the genuine friendship between them, and the type of support that Dick gave Mary. So often we find that the relationships we watch on TV are illusions, in that outside of the performance they could even dislike one another. I love to hear when the ensemble cast has formed a family bond. This was a great interview with two of my most favorite and beloved actors, whose shows I still watch.
I can't help thinking that bc they were both great dancers, that brought so much grace, lightness, vitality, an flexibility to the show and their roles.
Wasn't Laura Petrie a former showgirl in the original storyline? She certainly had a lot of opportunities to sing and dance over the course of the series.
@@jazzmanchgo I had forgotten about that, I only remember her as a housewife, but now that you mention it, they must have had flashbacks ? or something . . .
@@govbop There were episodes in which Rob and Laura (often with Buddy and Sally) might put on a skit or a talent show of some kind. Here' are two examples: ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-ovhmK5VNc3E.html ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-VKHByjZhFR8.html I think there were also some dream sequencea that incorporated song-and-dance routines or theatrical gimmicks in which Laura participated.
Though I'm not a particular Larry King fan, when I saw his guests were MTM and DVD, I gave it a watch. It turned out to be the most enjoyable celeb-interview I've ever seen. There's not even the barest hint of 'Hollywood--me--me--me'. Both had difficulties in their lives, but they overcame them without letting the issues take over life and career. The two of them had true affection, chemistry, class, and talent. You don't find that combo much nowadays-----
"When did you first know that I was a sot?" Oh how I love them. I teared up when they sang "You Wonderful You". They sang it together several times on the show.
