That's because it was the great Funk Brothers who were backing her up on the music the legendary Funk Brothers no one and I mean no one could top the Funk Brothers in music
The Funk Brothers the greatest backup musical group there was, They backed up so many artist in Motown their music was extraordinary they are the maestro of sound no one could perform the sounds of backup like the Funk Brothers. The greatest backup artist there ever were of music. Rest in peace Funk Brothers thank you for giving us such great music.
One of the many beautiful highlights I love with these great extended versions, is getting to hear those silky smooth harmonies & instrumentation backing phenomenal lead vocals - in this case, it's the captivating voice of Mary Wells whose unmistakable & sexy lure works every single time !
December covid-19 2021 Earl Van Dyke and The Funk Brothers are the unsung heroes of Motown's Groove and chart success. Their legacy is worthy of "Soul Prosterity" for the ages and generations to come.
When ever I hear some of Motown's early hit's from 1962 to '63 sung by Mary Wells. I ALWAYS think of my Aunt Ellery. We called her "punpkin"/pumpkin, she was a young 15yr old at the time and would baby sit me and my siblings and take us places etc.. Those were some good times.....To Motown, and Aunt Ellery, who is STILL with us and Mary Wells..RIP... thanks for the memories.
Fascinating... the drummer was really in the pocket and added so much to the great sound of this Motown classic. This record just works, and you have once again demonstrated why.
And in response, Mary dedicated an entire album to Beatles' songs: Mary Wells "Love Songs To The Beatles" Full vinyl album -- right here on RU-vid: ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-DnO3kdHiyvg.html. Smart move, Mary. For an additional variation on the Beatles try (also on RU-vid): The Beatles In Bossa Nova [FULL ALBUM] [1999] ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-ZLUgYlmNLB0.html (a delightful find).
Just in case you didn't know, the owner of this channel, mosogotam, whose real name is John Perrone, sadly passed away April 5, 2020 from COVID-19. He was an absolute genius for this and all the other wonderful tracks he created. May he rest in peace.
I didn't know. I always thought he should have a Sirius channel featuring his extended productions as well as highlighting early rock and early R&B. Perhaps someone could do that now.
+Chuck Flowers Smokey wrote the lyrics, melody, and the music. The Funk Brothers played what Smokey directed them to play. Smokey wrote music and lyrics, not just lyrics.
+Jerry Johnson Smokey wrote the lyrics, melody, and the music. The Funk Brothers played what Smokey directed them to play. Smokey wrote music and lyrics, not just lyrics.
+hollidayevery Thank you for your reply...this is why I loved albums; the 'liner notes,' which gave you writers, lyrics and names of the musicians and the instruments they played on a song. Be well. Blessings
This was the first record I ever bought, along with the Marvelettes, "Playboy," and Neal Sedaka's, "Breaking up is Hard To Do." I still recall the store on 14th Street where i bought them. I have never tired of this one !
I love this extended edition much more than the radio edition. This song dazzles my brilliance. Also, Gene Chandler had a song that sounds similar to "You Beat Me to the Punch," which is called, "You Threw a Lucky Punch." This music has a touch of class. It has the best style.
my very 1st vinyl single was by Mary wells my reason iit happened was that babe's sexy voice then, I saw this stunning beauty on stage this impressive lady had it all
Musical tastes change but this song and Mary Wells generally illustrate the best of early 1960s R&B and rock music. And the Funk Brothers set the pace for studio musicians of the era, and perhaps any era. I read that the Funk Brothers loved to work with Mary Wells as she was an excellent musician and of course singer. They made her better, and she made them better
She stood up to Barry Gordy being cheap..and she saved herself alot of grief. When you look at the scene deeper and with time it asks the question'what did Motown lose by losing her...she had maturity and polish and could have taken them light years beyond their given outcomes.
this is the first song I ever heard that I fell in love with...I had heard music before but nothing grabbed at my heart like "YOU BEAT ME TO THE PUNCH". from the first note to the last. and thank you for uploading this version. you are a very talented person. you would have a very valuable asset at Motown.
Outstanding! The perfect way to reveal all the coolness in the backing tracks! Hope you'll do The One Who Really Loves You in this same form. Thanks for your work!
AHHHHH!!!!!! I was wondering when you would get to some of the "QUEEN" of Motown's hits.. and you picked a true classic to begin this journey with!!!!! as always the visuals make this track priceless!! Bravo,pisano...as always.....all the best from NYC///joey
William Mason you are absolutely right. My Cooley High moment was in summer of 1975 when it came to the movie theaters. What a great cast of actors, not to mention the All Motown Soundtrack.
Kid Sanders I hear you brother. That is a classic film. Used to own a DvD copy and watch it, taking in the music. Laughing at Preach, Cochise and the crew lol
She was before the era of Cooley High. Most of her songs were put out in the late 1950s and 1960s, but no doubt a walk down memory lane. I was 5 years old when Cooley High came out, great movie, classic.
NOW THAT IS CLASSIC MOTOWN YES THATS WHEN MUSIC WAS MUSIC AND TO THINK IT WAS ANALOG TAPE YES ALL MISTAKES STAYED ON THE TAPE SO THEY HAD TO GET IT RIGHT THE FIRST TAKE BERRY GORDY WAS ON A VERY TIGHT BUDGET BACK IN THOSE EARL DAYS
Edgar....I know. RU-vid had me take down other Mary Wells songs that I extended. Makes me a little gun shy to put any others up. Sorry. Glad you like this one, though.
God! It would be awesome to have a whole cd of your remixes. Universal should hire you. Great stuff. What a great song btw. Don't know if your in NYC but there is going to be a Motown tribute at Carnegie Hall next Thursday the 9th of February.
they say Marvin gaye was a backup singer in some of her songs while standing around and smokey asked him to stand right there and gave him a mike and wow just what he needed you can hear the backup great
Is that The Temptations on male backgrounds? The rhythm section got a lot of mileage out of that 'cha-cha' beat here and in "The One Who Really Loves You." RIP Benny, James, Eddie, Popcorn, Brokes, and the rest...
Mary Wells with the Tempts backing her, the Funk Brothers laying down the rhythm...you get a masterpiece... and it's extended... what more could you ask for? Thank you!! ❤ @mosogotam
I do the same thing but have never been able to upload them. One of the guys was able to get permission to sell one of his remixes. The song is, "Tinsel Town In The Rain," by Blue Nile and he had so many requests to buy his "Max Mix.," that he finally got to put it up for sale on Itunes. I don't know what he did and he doesn't seem to be talking, but you might want to contact him, and see what he did for permission. Thanks for sharing this
It is surprising to find both. Berry Gordy talks about the "quality control" he put into his Motown productions, but he missed on this. This was one of the first big hits for Motown. I suspect Gordy didn't have his operation in high gear yet. Or it could be that Gordy really didn't want to groom Mary. Mary Wells' vocalizations and general treatment of this song is exceptional, but she could have done another take to eliminate this (minor) flaw.
