Do your ponies ever spook or act naughty? They all look like angels! Quiet chilled angels, even the 3 year olds! 🤣 I got bucks and a big spook from my 10 year old at my show today (the 20 degree overnight temp change didn’t help) 🤦🏼‍♀️

You were talking about when is it time to start young horses. I feel that the time to start young horses depends on the horses themselves n how they develop. I usually start my colts close to 2 but only walking, trotting n some light cantering until their knees seal. Sometime around the age of two, a colts knees will seal. If they are worked hard before the knees are sealed, the colts can develop chips in their knees. I take my colts to the vet n have an X-ray done on their knees to see if the knees are closed n sealed before their real work starts.

Had a horse show yesterday, did not go great but I got through the show, didn’t scratch in the classes, and rode through the issues. It was a county fair so horses wanted to get out the leftover energy from being in the stall overnight and did not want to leave their buddies lol! They were already used to the grounds luckily but the arena is grass so the ground isn’t very even and we never do great with it, on the bright side at my cow show I got grand champion heifer, this was the first of my cows to win at the fair and since I’m the only one who shows Scottish highlands it was the first time one of the has won so that was the highlight of the weekend!

why do you guys start these horses so young on such a hard work out program before their bodies, bones , ligaments, tendons etc have had time to fully develop?

I think it depends on the type of horse and their individual "mental state" so to say at what age you can get on them. I would never get on a 2,5 year old KWPN horse for instance (Dutch sport horse) because they have so much growing to do at that age. But with Quarters I can understand it's way different.. They do not grow another 30 cm in hight at 2,5.. And they have much more strength in their bodies because of their "bulky build". A 2 year old KWPN horse is stil not much more than long legs, very slim body and a scrawny nek.. I've seen Quarters at the age of 1,5 that where already more "grown into their bodies" than some KWPN's are at the age of 4.. (those KWPN's I would not get on before they are strong enough no matter what age they are).. I think that as a "standard norm" the opinion "The taller a horse is going to be the more time they need to become strong and balanced enough for someone to get on" is a good basic rule.. And as always.. No 2 horses are exactly they same in build and mental development..

When their legs are closed enough for the ask is when its appropriate to be spinning and stopping.

I would ride any of those horses for free. Just beautiful!
