I'm from Maryland. Back in the day, these were fierce rivals in the ACC. When they met in a NATIONAL CHAMPIONSHIP GAME, things were really intense. I didn't have cable then, so I listened to the whole thing on the radio believe it or not.

This was one of the few games I got to watch that season. I spent most of the fall and winter stabilizing my life and figuring out my future after Hurricane Katrina had hit. Women’s hoops was in such a good place even then, or maybe I’m biased because this era was the era of my peers, but there was still a lot of “LOL NOBODY WATCHES WOMEN’S SPORTS” pushback to contend with. Both LSU teams made it to the Final Four, but then both were ice cold from the field in losses. I almost didn’t watch this championship game, then it wound up being one of the best games of the season.
Maryland women's basketball had a rich history in the late 80s with Vicky Bullet. But even before then, they were in the final four or elite 8 I think 2 or 3 years in a row, right when the women's NCAA basketball came into being and AIAW ended in 1982. This was when schools like USC, La Tech, Tennessee and Georgia were the main schools making noise.
So I guess you could say the Terps put the Friese on Puke and shell shocked the Blue Devils. Much respect to Friese and Gary Williams. The early-mid 2000’s was their time to shine.

As a Terps fan since I was a week old (we lost, they got baby me crying on camera), I'm so hype you're finally covering us! Even as a primarily Men's bball fan, we all followed Frese's terps. They were absolute monsters, and Frese was a huge part of that. Our offense was crushing. Our defense was beastly. And she's still going to this day! As for our rivalry with Duke, it's actually a pretty big reason that we left the NCAA for the Big 10. In one of our last years in the conference, the big guys of the NCAA decided to introduce a "rivals game" program to drum up ticket sales. UMD wanted Duke, because by then we had a lot of history with Duke and those were always our biggest home games of the season. But our beef with Duke had always been pretty one-sided: we would all come out to watch the game and get mad at referees for calling Duke's 5th charge in a row a foul by us, Duke would probably win, but every shot we made against Duke tore the roof off. But Duke already had a rival- UNC and their Tar Heels, so instead the office assigned us some team we barely knew. That disrespect, combined with an absurd check from the Big 10, pushed us to leave the NCAA entirely within a few short years.
I hate to be “that guy”, but…Are any Jon and Alex Dorktown videos in the works? It seems lately that SB is just a lot of Rewinders, Beef Histories and the occasional Prism any more.
The last series they released was about the Minnesota Vikings. It was phenomenal. I'm listening to 4 part series about Dave Stieb again this weekend. It is one of my favorites.

Important note here - Tolliver hit that shot over Alison Bales, who was possibly the best shot-blocker in women’s hoops at the time. And yes, this game broke my heart. Coach G deserved a title.
I still remember watching this with my late grandmother. We were Tar Heels fans in which I still am today. Women’s basketball was truly at its peak then. I used to have a crazy crush on Lindsey Harding. lol
As a Canucks fan, you really need to do a beef history between the Avalanche and Canucks leading to Todd Bertuzzi destroying Steve Moore’s career. It’s one of the biggest incidents that happened in the NHL.
