MAS 1935S MI

In early 1937 France adopts not one, but two service pistols, both in 7.65 Long for ammunition compatibility with the upcoming SMG (MAS38). The most widely known is the 1935A mostly due to being the template for the SIG P.49, but the other pistol, the 1935S, is usually dismissed as being somehow inferior but is it really?

Had to pause it for a moment there, Chap. You snuck a "war were declared" in on us, and it took me a second to wrap my brain around no vintage film sequence. Well played!

JUST received (April 2024), "The French 135 Pistol" by Eugene Medlin and Colin Doane. I was very pleased to note that it had been autographed by Eugene Medlin - not even the vendor (Amazon) had noticed.

Additional comment, I have wanted one of these, a very nice S presented it self, this video helped me make a good assessment. This video was very timely and had all the details needed. Now I want the 9 version. PS: I shamelessly took all the credit for knowing so much about these two French pistols.

I'll echo what some others have already said, but I really appreciate this video. Concise and to the point, yet digs deep enough to satisfy my gun nerd / engineering bent. These are pistols I know little about, but I do love my old Ruby pistol, so pointing out the similarities was cool to see. Sounds like you need to befriend someone with a job description similar to Jonathan Ferguson's, only of the French variety ;)

Great video Chap. Especially since you are a native French speaker so you have access to French writings on both these yet also are an excellent English speaker and can do things like this. I would wonder if the designers of the 1935S designers were reflecting Great War experience with pistols having issues with replacing the magazine after mud got into the well?

Viva Le Chap al a Mle 1935S! My Mle 1935S M1 is probably a parts gun: MF 1945 G serial frame, MAT slide, slide & frame patina similar, and a painted slide stop. Very interesting on the load development. Mine did that very same thing with the vertical loaded chamber indicator. Didn't follow up do to concerns on getting the bullets properly crimped to the case. Looking forward to the Mle 1935A video. Is there Mle 1950 in works also?
@derekp2674
@derekp2674 Год назад
Thanks Chap that was really interesting. If the 1935S was succeeded by the MAC Mle 1950, then it was probably a very good design in practice. I can see why the 1935A might be well regarded from the being the forerunner of the P49 / P210. So how about a comparison between the 1950 and the P49? Are they both fit for purpose, so there is nothing really to choose between them?

So, looking at that mag safety - can you just pull the spring actuating the mechanism or do you need to remove the whole lower arm? That is, if you want to remove the mag safety.

Removing the lower arm should be enough or even just the spring between the arms.

Could the need for light primers and hot loads in the rounds be the reason for it's coming second in trial? If it's finnicky about the ammo it takes I mean.
@thebotrchap
@thebotrchap Год назад
It may just be my gun. I’d need to run some original ammo to find out. Considering the tens of thousands made I doubt that was the issue.
@SlavicCelery
@SlavicCelery Год назад
Also, to be fair most of the 9mm of the time would be consider "hot" today. I think a combination of expected reliability and expectations of SMGs encouraged hotter loads. Although, how much of that is caused by degradation of propellants, is anyone's guess.

@thebotrchap
@thebotrchap Год назад
Upon reflection I'm guessing the change was to make the safety as close to the one on the 35A to simplify training since the 35A was already widely issued by the time the 35S really starts rolling off the production line. The trouble with both is that it is REALLY easy to flip it on when racking the slide so if you're in a rack'n'shoot situation there's a risk of finding the safety on when trying to fire.

Purely aesthetically sure, physically however the primitive outline of the S grip is actually far more ergonomic than it looks, it's actually similar to a Vis35 with a deep beaver tail and a wide base. The fat grip panels also negate the sharp corners of the grip frame.

Worst safety of any gun. Many don't even work and are knocked back down if hammer is dropped. It would be better to not have it at all than to give false sense of safety which no one uses in first place.
