Cool Forgotten Weapons merch! shop.bbtv.com/collections/forg...
I finally have a source for top quality reliable 7.65mm French Long, thanks to Steinel! I can't link to them, but I'm sure anyone who wants some themselves can find them online. Anyway, with ammo now available, I decided to test out the French 1935A and 1935S pistols side by side. First slow fire at 10 yards for groups, then 30 yards at a steel plate, and then rapid fire at 5 yards.
Both of these pistols were formally adopted for French military use. The 1935A was first, designed by Charles Petter and made by SACM. When production was not sufficient to meet Army demand, the St Etienne design from the trials was also adopted and put into production. Both guns use the same cartridge, and both are Browning-type tilting barrel actions, but the mechanical similarities end there. Handling-wise they are quite similar, both using magazine release buttons and similar safety levers on the back of the slides.
The verdict for me from shooting both was that I prefer the 1935A. Its trigger was more predictable for me (although that may not be representative of all 35A and 35S examples), and I like the handling of the grip better.

The cartridge was originally for the American WW I era Pedersen device, and the French adopted it for their military. One point is that the Pedersen used an 80 grain bullet and the French version used a 77 grainer. The test ammo used 110 grain bullets, which probably gave more recoil than the original loadings.

The absolute most difficult ammo I ever tried to locate was 7.62 x 39 . It was 1967 and my good buddies older brother brought back a brand new sks, they found a cache and everyone had the opportunity to bag one, capture tag and all. In 1967 and some years to follow it was not a good idea to ask random gun store people for AK ammo. They would most likely scoff at the question or reappraise who was asking such a stupid question. I gave up the search when things at Pine Ridge got real and that guy waving the AK around was front page news.. I found a box of Lapua sometime later and what I paid for twenty rounds took some of the shine off of the purchase.

I would be interested to hear you talk about the different methods of handeling guns and their history over time and countries. (It's just a suggestion). Greetings for Normandy, keep it up :)

Had a Mle 1935A once upon a time long ago. Liked the video and ammo is back so I went out and bought a decent Mle 1935S M1. These are actually very good guns, much under rated I think. Original holster is harder to find than the gun is! Some wonder what the M1 is for, it is for the safety modification to make it the same as the 1935A. Pretty darn good shooting Ian, BTW.

My wife is not pleased with you. I now have discovered a love for French designs and have been buying up early French rifles. I am actually looking at a Nazi marked "1935A" model now.... and now I know where to find some brass to reload lol. Outstanding video as usual!

Another late birthday present. Thank you gun jesus. I got an MLE 1935a last month and while it cycles buffalo arms ammo fine this stuff costs half as much.

That A has a very nice ring when you rack the slide.

I don't know if I've ever seen Ian happier. He now has his obsolete French ammo. 😁😁😁

Sectional density and velocity is just about identical to 147gr 9mm. That's.....not nothing.

Good vid Ian. Have handled the A & S. The A is certainly the nicer pistol. Would love to shoot them at some point.

Merry Christmas Ian. Thank you for helping expand the understanding about these French 1935 pistols. I think you are wrong about the safety's on the 1935 French Pistols. The proper drill with them is ( 1 ) you load a filled mag (2) then chamber a round (3) Push the Safety lever up. (4) lower the hammer, The S.A.C.M. made 1935 A has a half cock notch on the hammer that should be used. the M.A.C. made !935 S M 1 does not have one. I think This makes them safe to carry with a round in the chamber. Putting the pistols into firing mode is to make a single sweep of the safety off and cocking the hammer. This takes a lot of practice. and Yes it is hard for a left handier like yourself. It is easier to do with the 1935 A model. This piece already has 473 comments so this will be buried deep in them. It would be nice if you could include this in one of your Question and answer programs, Also when you shoot a match with a French1935
