+Doctor Dollars What a shame. I REALLY wish that the cell phone companies shut down all text based services completely, i.e SMS, IM, e-mail on mobile devices! In California about 50% of the drivers that i see on the road have their eyes looking down between their legs where they hide their phones while texting and driving, instead of looking on the road and therefore the way those people drive - looks like they are drunk!!! And not a single CHP officer around to pull those dangerous drivers over!

Many older cars were problematic because of the materials used. The Citroen SM and Maserati Biturbo for instance needed timing belts replaced at 50,000 km because the belt tended to wear and tear at this mileage. Failure to do so would result in irreversible engine damage. These days running a Citroen SM or Maserati Biturbo, with modern components, is "easy". Like I said, my brother has replaced several components in his Biturbo with modern replacements. Car is solid and fun to drive.

Just to inform all of you ,italian haters, Biturbo was the first car in the history with double turbocharging, so if it had some possible problems, it was quite normal. Also ,after some experimental cars (racing, shamal, karif) ,Maserati ended up in Ghibli II (the most powerful 2.0 L coupe for maaaany years, and possibly still today) and Quattroporte IV (making the family supercar project famous maaaany years before Mitsubishi Evo. thing about the biturbo, is that the company was cash strapped in the day. so they went from supercar and super gt territory to Porsche level sport/gt/saloons. but what they did was stick a really good engine behind not so good electronics and chassis but an amazing interior. the biturbo was a car you would point and shoot not something you would carry speed in the corners with. but early cars with all of the reliability issues was really as good as it could have been in those days. maserati was building cars in the traditional way in the early 80's and the 3rd gen quattroporte was still hand built. the biturbo was the first mass produced car the company ever produced and really was as good as it could been because of that. however by the late 80's the car vastly improved in all aspects and was actually a decent car, and in the 90's it became the car it should have been. biturbo owners love their cars because they aren't actually bad cars. problem is that they get handed down, then someone does a fix on a fix and no one knows what to actually do to fix a problem and the car ends up with a bad reputation. in the day the company was also tiny and its not like there were dealers around in every city to fix a car and the design was so complex for the time mechanics really didn't have a clue. same thing happened to jag in the 50's and 60's. in order to get the biturbo to run well and not cause problems would be to always run and use the car. never let it sit because thats how you get problems with any car, you also need to let a car like the biturbo warm up, owners in the day were these posh people who didn't know a thing about cars (those that did were not buying biturbos). they just drove cars like these from point a to point b, where as a car like this needs a stretch of the legs or else it will treat you in the same way, take care of the car and it will take care of you.

+Adam Othman Problem is, that it was a turbocharged non fuel injected engine for the first five or so years. The mixture was always off so it used tons of fuel and ran poorly. Adjust it for cruising and it leans out under load

Jo TUWE yeah but once they figured it out it was actually a pretty good car.... the problems were worked out and then it was doomed to it reputation

+Adam Othman dude the engine sucks its unreliable doesn't even make 200hp and if you wanted to do an aftermarket ecu good luck because its odd fire

Markos Simopoulos dude it was the 80's unless you had a rarri or a car of that type they'd be lucky to make 200 hp. unreliable at first but they worked it out..... its also a maserati so i dont see why it has to be reliable in the first place (ferraris dont) and why would you even try to ecu this car? im pretty sure these things came out before you could even do that....

my volvo of the same year made slightly less power and can be very easily modified to make much more and those engines run for ever. I'm just saying having worked on 3 biturbo engines all 3 had less than 20k on them they are junk they have nothing to offer. you have to adjust the valves every 10k miles and let me tell you how much of a bitch that is and you better not take off the timing belt off because there are no timing marks. also the timing belts are known to break, the alternator puts out less power than the electrical system draws. and it runs like crap because twin turbos and carbs don't belong together. yes efi existed back then. IMO you would be much better of swaping a honda v6 in and call it a day.

Having been in the entertainment business, I understand a dramatic entrance but crushing that Bi Turbo was just wrong - what a british ass! I loved the Bi Turbo, in the 80's when my friends & rivals purchased BMW 320i - I set the high water mark when I rolled up with my Bi Turbo. I casually explain Neptune's tridents (mythology) were not crowns - that was 80's cool baby.... Pretty good for a kid from Harlem U.S.A.

1 thing may be better: An injector in a close to spark plug-position is easier to realise as the area in the center of combustion chamber that´s not occupied by valves is bigger. BUT - this is possible with 4v too, if the size of the valves is decreased like if there were 6, and /port design will not stop being better. In small cylinders the increase of breathing sometimes is even better with 3v as the distance between seat rings and some other things can´t be reduced as much as bore diameter.
