In my lectures about Assistive Technology I often refer to this scene from the movie Intouchables. Assistive technology can be designed to serve a function: transport a person from point A to point B. But why would a person with disability settle for only function restoration?
Assistive technology, whether a customized car, wheelchair, cane or communication aid, should be more than only functional. It should fit with you in the same way you want your jeans to fit. Values of users should be incorporated in the design.
One lady (locked-in syndrome) I interviewed communicated to me: "Have you seen the movie Intouchables? Well, I decided that I wanted the Maserati among wheelchairs. I chose a white one, with black wheels".
