Masking as a Late-Diagnosed Autistic Female

Being quiet and relying on the assumptions others make about me based on my appearance are the main ways in which I mask as a late-diagnosed autistic woman. Suppressing stems and attempting to act unbothered by sensory stimuli are also ways I mask.

Sis, we are so similar it's scary. Right down to the skull tattoo on the right upper arm. I'm freaking out a little bit because I am who you are describing as yourself. I've always been! I've watched a lot of creators and felt many similarities since realizing 6 months ago that neurodivergence is really at the root of my lifelong struggles to live like a normal human in this world, but never have I heard my literal story being told through another woman's lived experience. I'm actually really relieved. At 54, I really wish I had figured this out sooner. Thank you for existing. I feel what you are experiencing. I just want to be at peace with myself and be at peace in the world, but that second part is the issue. I've learned to love and accept myself, but not in the context of relating to other people. I've been alone for 12 years now, to the point where it is frightening, but also comforting. I'm seeking a diagnosis, which is not what I ever wanted, but my struggles are just intensifying a sense of overwhelm that I refuse to continue to live with as I age. Just want to extend my hand in solidarity because we are deep, intense, soulful beings with extraordinary capabilities and gifts. Thank you for sharing.

Thank you so much! I’m so glad you can relate to my experiences! Sometimes I have mixed feelings- I’m happy when someone can relate but simultaneously sad for what that implies that they’ve experienced or are currently experiencing. Overall though, it’s been such a relief for me to find others to whom I relate & vice versa I definitely think it’s a good thing & helps us all to feel less alone. I agree that we are extremely capable with great gifts and feel things very deeply, and since finding out about my own neurodivergence, I’ve stopped trying to force a square peg into a round hole so to speak. I’m becoming more in tune with how to comfortably exist in the world. I hope your discovery helps you as well!

Boomer here with 4 tattoos. I work in a corporate environment and had a manger try to get a good glimpse at a large tattoo that was partially exposed. I was not amused because it was sneaky of him to try.

You described masking similarly to how I would. I can only really do it to the extent of just being quiet. I think the idea of masking doesn't work, because we're living in Invasion of the Body Snatchers every moment and trying to portray it as if everything's okay. But I very seriously think neurotypical people are slightly high, and that it's oxytocin(which autistic people have a deficit of) making neurotypical people high. Think about the ways they describe you: Are they ways that a high person might describe a sober person? And they keep reading negativity into things we say, obsessively looking at others' faces, having minds that wander, feeling more connected with other people, joking, teasing, flirting, et cetera, being more physically relaxed and less afraid, but instead a little bit paranoid about unfamiliar people's intentions and needing a group around them. Maybe talking about the weather is more like two people who distrust each other and are scared to talk about anything more substantial than it is like people who actually want to talk about the weather.

And autistic people are so nervous thinking about "Is this person going to like me?" that we forget to be nervous about "Is this person safe to be around me?"
@Sensory0verlord
@Sensory0verlord 5 месяцев назад
“Is this person safe to be around me?” This is so important!! I wish I’d learned this sooner. It doesn’t matter if people like me if they’re not safe for me to be around. In the past with certain people, I spent too much time worrying about “do they like me” instead of “are they safe” and learned the hard way. That’s one big reason why I feel the need to be quiet and especially observant these days. I’d never thought about the oxytocin connection before, but even before suspecting that I’m autistic, I suspected I was low on oxytocin. I have also noticed that even in social gatherings where no substances were involved, that often NT people would act “high”.

@@Sensory0verlord I'm 41. About a year ago I tried an edible(10mg) for the first time. Not only did I feel relaxed, but I felt super motivated and cleaned my whole house, and then meal prepped for a whole week. I actually spent over a decade self-diagnosed, because I couldn't figure out how to schedule a diagnostic appointment, but two days after the first edible was when I managed to schedule the appointment. Within the last year, I've used it to resolve confusing situations that happened in my past(eating an edible and then writing about possibilities), and I've found really simple explanations for almost all of them. It has helped me so much, and I've heard so many similar stories from other autistic people and ADHDers about how it helps them accomplish a lot more and deal with other people. And not only that, but it also lets me fall asleep at a normal time and get a whole of sleep, and then I wake up with my mind clear. I can't even convey how good it feels to wake up with your mind clear.

I’ve heard of a lot of people getting good results with that as well. My body & nervous system tend to respond in a negative way to anything intended to alter its natural state in any way- even common things like refined sugar, alcohol, & caffeine. Definitely spoiled the fun for me a few times when I was younger & more experimental.😕 But I’m glad that it helps & is working for you and others! I’m glad I had a therapist to guide me because I don’t think I would’ve known where to start on my own. I knew that something caused my reactive nervous system & extra sensitivity to sensory stimuli, etc. I thought it was sensory processing disorder & possibly dysautonomia until I was assessed last year. Those things may still apply, but autism definitely explains it all.

I have become very quiet too. I used to mask being very outgoing, but then I end up in all kinds of situations where people think I’m like that and that is so draining.. so now I just try to stay with safe people or just myself. 😊 I used to be called arrogant Many times, if you are a smart woman and speak your mind you Will get that.
@Sensory0verlord
@Sensory0verlord 5 месяцев назад
I also try to be around safe people or by myself. It’s much more fulfilling and enjoyable. I’ve said before that I’m sometimes a canvas on which other people paint their insecurities. When people call you arrogant, it’s often because they’ve recognized something positive about you that makes them feel threatened.

We need to demand Neurotypicals to meet us half-way. We have adapted to Neurotypicals for way too long. They need to adapt to us as well. Btw I think you can start in some cool Hot rod/ mythbuster type show with your look and skillset.

I had that Mark Twain quote, “It’s better to remain silent and be thought a fool than to speak and remove all doubt” on a T-shirt in high school. As a quiet masker, I felt that it declared my reason for my silence. My aloofness was often interpreted as arrogance by my peers, but lauded by the adults (teachers, those in authority). Suppression remains my mask of choice.
@Sensory0verlord

It’s a great quote! The interpretation of aloofness is very relatable & similar to what I experienced back in high school.

I literally thought “OKAY, THUMBNAIL!” YOU GOT ME! Well played and poignant! It’s a question of “how many spoons will this take?” when weighing “play along” or “just be odd” masking situations for me. Plus, which presents the least direct danger (survival strats)… 🫶🏾🕸🧠

Thumbnails can be so obnoxious, and they’re essentially masking for content! 😆 Survival definitely plays a role in masking for me too, always taking into consideration energy expenditure, the environment, & sensory stimuli.
