The masons were a big deal in Mexico too. They were not friendly and contributed to the persecution of the Church and its partial banishment from the public square in many ways. The cynical part of me could see it as a fight between two old boys clubs, and the background events of "The Power and The Glory' by Graham Greene suggests that this was the case, though I don't think the masons are ever mentioned in that book and I don't know how much history one can read from that story. Masons, as an organization here in Canada, seem to have almost disappeared.

I'm amazed that you fail to understand the deeper truth of Freemasons and Freemasonry. Our nation of USA is built from the ground-up along the design lines of this freemasonry architecture in our culture and societal values. This was not the case, in the way Old Europe grew and developed in the post-Roman Empire Christianity Kingdoms under the Church. Individuals who have been initiated in the masonic sects and practice associating in these clubs and fraternal memberships are either wittingly or unwittingly under the influence of the fallen angel realm. The initiation rites originate from ancient Egyptian religion which require initiates to acknowledge the gods of this world; which are really not gods at all but fallen entities behind the illusion of power and authority.

My late father said that since Catholic men couldn't be Masons, the Knights of Columbus were formed.. He sad that while both groups did good works, they gave men an excuse to get out of the house on a weeknight and to, on occasion, dress up in funny clothes. If I lived in pre-unification Italy, I would have been a member of the pro-unification movement, Pius IX was perhaps the most reactionary pope since the Enlightenment. As for Argentina, sooner or later, probably sooner, Argentines will turn against their government. It is hard to believe that in 1946 Argentina had the world's second strongest economy trailing only the USA. Like most fraternal groups founded in the 19th and early 20th C., they are shells of their former numbers and influence. I attended a non-Masonic legal arbitration in one of their halls which they rented out. A spooky vast empty place. Other Masonic halls have long since been sold off. Why this obsession in your church about them? The Shriners, a branch of the Masonic order seem like harmless good people, running noted (and free or cut-rate for the indigent or uninsured) medical centers for children. Try getting low-cost medical care in one of these massive RC medical conglomerates running multiple health care centers.
Why is the church so afraid of freemasonry. An institution that is a fraternity of men that MUST believe in God but yet work on making everyone around them better. Why so threatened?
