When you think about it, it's kind of crazy what BioWare did with Andromeda. It isn't just that they only added 2 new species to their lore; it's also that they left plenty of species behind, effectively making their universe a lot smaller. For a space franchise, it was a huge mistake.
Yeah, it's even worse than that to be honest. Andromeda broke the lore completely and should never be mentioned again for Mass effect' sake. 😒😆 The Andromeda galaxy is 2.5 million lightyears away from the Milky way. That's like 25 times the total length of our own galaxy, yet the Initiative crossed that gap in just 600 years or so. I'm not a big science guy but even I can understand simple concepts such as distances and we got a major problem here... I mean, only 1% of the Milky had been explored by the time of the original trilogy because it took a long time and a lot of ressources to move at regular FTL outside of Mass relays. But if you can go from one galaxy to the other in a few centuries, then you can go anywhere within your own galaxy in a matter of months or years. Even the relays are not that useful anymore in this situation. ME Andromeda will need massive retcons to work. At that point, they should just say ME Andromeda was just a movie in the ME Universe, like Blasto. 😅 ME2 on the other hand did a great job at expanding the universe, showing you a new race (the Vorchas) after just a few minutes and telling you a lot of unkown civilisations were around.
@@salvadorlloret-farina8767 retcons like they've found an ancient device or a singularity (that's bloody science fiction, you can always find an explanation) that connected both galaxies, to at least justify why they went so far when they still had an entire galaxy to explore right here. 😒 The relays gave the false impression that you could go anywhere in the Milky way when only the clusters close to said relays were really explored. I think the teams at Bioware Montreal lost sight of that during their creative process. The Heleus cluster could've been in the Milky way itself, to be honest. A 300 billion stars galaxy like our own is supposed to be an infinite playground, it's almost a crime to make you feel like it's too small.
The cosmic timing of the Raloi finding aliens & joining the wider Milky Way community was very... unfortunate... 😅 First dealing with bird flu prior to contact, then followed by an apocalyptic event with the Reapers... I wonder how the events of the war, our choices & outcomes will affect the alien races we have yet to meet... Especially any possible un/known pre-space species at the time, & if our ending choice had a devastating affect on their civilisation.
It sounds like the Asari uplifted the Raloi too early. They weren't space faring yet, or rather really new to it. They noticed the Asari in their system after launching their first space telescope. They weren't even given a chance to use their Mass Relay on their own or develop Element Zero technology.
If the Raloi has widespread news about them on the extranet, there's no way the reapers didn't listen in and realise what they were up to. Given time, I'm sure they would have been wiped out with the rest of the galaxy. Whether the reapers had enough time... I guess that's up to Bioware and whether they want to add a new species or not
Harvest would have taken centuries as we know from Javik about their conflict with the Reapers. So while Reapers may know about the Raloi and essentially every sentient species in the Milky Way, they may focus first on taking on the most powerful species first. Trilogy also supports this as Reapers seem to focus on council species and gain control of the Citadel. Other species such as Krogan and Quarians seem to be affected less even when the harvest is in full swing in Mass Effect 3. So it's possible that species disconnected from seats of power are simply ignored at first and only kept at bay with minimal effort by Reapers. They are simply dealt with later. We don't see much indoctrination going on in Krogans or Quarians, and even Geth seem to be "indoctrinated" only by reprogramming their core functions and this is not real indoctrination, it's reversible.
@@jarivuorinen3878 yeah, you're completely right. If the writers want the Raloi survive, I expect this will be the method they go about explaining it. If we're talking purely in universe, I'd expect this to be the likely outcome, but from a real life perspective it entirely depends on how many new races they want to include
Yagh had also a news about them on extranet + they massacred entire delegation sent from Citadel and yet they still hoped that destroying their satelites in orbit would be enough for Reapers to let them be. Even Hackett said that Yaghs may lead the next cycle if they lose, cause only spacefaring civilizations are harvested and Yaghs do not have spaceships, nor does the Raloi. And Raloi did the same thing Yaghs did. Isolated themselves, destroyed their space sattelites, telescopes etc. and hid. Btw. Raloi were discovered in 2184 by Asari, when Raloi sent their first telescope to space. This means that Raloi were not discovered till 2 years before the war, when they just began to consider space-travel. Considering how long Yaghs were known about, if they can hide from Reapers i would bet that Raloi would manage to do so too.
Your content has always been good but this is another highlight. Really well structured and more information on some of the more obscure races than I expected. You have a great way of reading things, so easy to listen to. I know I said this before but I remember someone criticising you for going over old material, I always felt that was unfair. The presentation is good and these videos help keep Mass Effect current until the next game comes out. Having some of those races join the galactic community would definitely freshen things up without dumping the established races that we love. Thanks for the great video.
1. The Reapers would've known the raloi were faking it thanks to their existence being logged by the Citadel races. 2. The Reapers bombed pre-spaceflight worlds before judging by places like Aphras.
Another incredible and informative video, thanks again Kala 👍 I remembered some of these Alien Races, but there were also some I'd completely forgotten about. I can't wait to see if BioWare will make use of any of these races or if there will be a Codex to reveal more. Mass Effect 5 just gets more and more intriguing...
@@kalaelizabeth :D I'm afraid you are going to spend an entire episode telling me how our Volus reporter was a whack job on LSD from the 70ies. I prefer thinking the Beings of Light are primordial motes of infinite genetic possibility that were somehow trapped by the Catalyst as part of a 'solution'. Can't wait!!
Smaller known races could step-up as main players. They could also find more alien races in the Andromeda or other galaxies which escaped to the Milky Way from their own local Reapers. They could introduce new races if they travelled to the future or if they stayed hibernated etc.
Now that the Krogan have a second chance without the Genophage and are clearly becoming a prominent galactic community species, I would love the Yahg to take their place in the next game as the hot headed, tanky enemies we fight. I would really love to see the Krogan respond to their threat, would shed some light as to why the galactic community did what they did and would be a way to further develop the Krogan as a prominent species in the universe. Maybe even have a Krogan embassy on the citadel (or whatever replaces it) respond to the threat and call the shots on how to handle them as they could be the only species physically strong enough to deal with them. Just me spitballing ideas on some great potential though
The Geths ability to survive Dolaons’ radiation may be a key to their survivability of the Crucibles’ Dark Energy powered EMP discharge. It may also be viable for Edis’ survival due to the time she spent with Legion.
I think it would be cool if that virtual race you mentioned, that uploaded themselves to a virtual world, were what’s left of a synthetic race from a previous cycle
Even if they introduce the raloi it doesn't necessarily mean that the milkyway will be where we start with the game as in the trailer it shows both Andromeda and the milkyway galaxies which might mean that the game will place in both galaxies
Very impressed with the story of the virtual civilization. I had not heard it before. And now I want a film or TV series adaptation of this story. It sounded really exciting.
I’d love to meet and get to know new races and learn more about the ones we know about already too like the Volus and Elcor. I think it would be interesting for new and upcoming races to deal with the consequences of the reaper war and firing of the crucible. Depending on how far along they were in their technology development and then to potentially have some force from the sky wipe out all of their technology and set them back would be interesting. How does that impact their development as a species and their questioning of whether there are other races out there in space? Would they develop religious reasons for its happening or even become hateful toward the council races. So much lore and story potential! Great video and awesome subject!
“Monsters from the Id” was the cause of the eradication of the Krell race and is a callback to Forbidden Planet, a way-ahead-of-it’s-time sci-fi movie made the year I was born. All you millennial and younger ME enthusiasts should give it a watch.
The Yahg, now that I think about it are a lot like the Rakata from Star Wars. The Rakata were a lot like a school of sharks, carnivores utterly. First contact with them went badly because the small number of emissaries didn't understand that the Rakata measure a groups strength by numbers, and a smaller group always submits to a larger. By not immediately submitting to them the Rakata took it that the emissaries thought they were equals to the much larger group of Rakata. Enraged the Rakata attacked the Emissaries and ate them.
It would be cool to see the Raloi in the next game. It would be funny if their plan HAD worked, the Reapers ingnored them and now all the rest species RESENT them.
I hope in mass effect 5 we will get a Bataren,Volus and hanar in our squad it would make mass effect 5 amazing also hope we get a Geth squad mate with the different version
Since finding that derelict Reaper in Mass Effect 2 after a second play through, I’ve wondered how and why the Reapers would let one of their own stay adrift over a planet for such a long amount of time, especially when they do everything they can to keep their existence a secret for further harvesting endeavors. Then another thing I once saw, isn’t one of the moons of Thedas from Dragon Age shown to be Klendagon with the mass accelerator scar?
The AI Ghost ship scenario reminds me of two Babylon 5 storiess the first one is in Season 3 called 'A day in the Strife' the second is the Tv Movie River of Souls
I would be more interested in what their standing is in the galaxy. Will they be more advanced or less advanced. One of the things Mass Effect hasn't done that is common in Science Fiction is time travel. That is one way to meet the Inusannon's. In theoretical physics negative-mass not only gets you faster than light travel it also gets you time travel.
Leviathan of Dis... As in the City of Dis from the Divine Comedy? (aka Citta' di Dite in Tuscan dialect)? Suddenly that Dante class I took in grad school was worth all the headache.
So the Raloi race is still out there or The Reapers opened their first RFC (Reaper Fried Chicken). Didn't Admiral Hackett say the Reaper's were leaving the Yahg Home world of Parnack alone and if the Reaper's won the Yahg might be running thing in the next cycle.
Math is universal. It's just the concepts of "more" and "less". That's why it's considered the universal language. Many mathematical equations repeat throughout nature/ the universe such as Planck's Constant. It's pretty much considered a given that we will use math as a foundation for communication in a first contact scenario.
I know this is completely off topic but I hope we actually get to fly our ship personally in the next game not just click where we wanna go and just get a pretty loading screen there. But yeah I hope we get to meet all these alien races as well I mostly wanna meet the Raloi myself
As much as I love jarvic I like for a protheans more the inunsanon they are friggin weird and literally alien to me. While the Cannon protheans look to me like something akin to a batarian mixed with an asari. I would like that the innunsanon where the top tier species "akin to the protheans" 50.000 years before the protheans. So basically what protheans are for the current galaxy but to the actual protheans. Like the precursor race to the forerruner in halo. They are too cool just for end being one more basic race of the prothean cycle.
First, great video as always. Second, as long as Commander Shepherd is NOT in Mass Effect 5 (other than being referenced in relation to events that happened in the DISTANT past), then it should be a good game. Just my own personal opinion anyway. But regardless, again great video as always.
Wait there is an AI race that can swap bodies That screams for a disaster what if one of them gets a reaper body and starts harvesting xD except they only saved the upstanding citizens with nothing evil in mind
The virtual aliens are super interesting, I did the math and they lived over 2 billion years of existence in their world which would probably make their minds at least even older then the leviathans.
Hey, any chance you could ever highlight the issues of Mass Effect Legendary Edition on console? Look up "SciFiIsMyJam" for more information. Like the final fight in Mass Effect 2 missing assets. Broken lighting, broken features such as melee combos in ME3 and Renegade Eyes for custom Femsheps in ME3.
@@M3e36-99I've played through it SEVERAL times since it was released two years ago. Around a dozen times. Played as both male and femshep on my PS5 and XSX. Had virtually no issues. Just the random glitches all games have. Barely even noticeable. I have no idea what this guy was talking about.
Search it all as one word, then you will find multiple videos covering the multiple issues "Legendary Edition" actually has when compared to the original releases, you may not have noticed it- but your brain did as the saying goes.
@@BlueMarsalis I found the playlist "Legendary Edition critique series." I agree the lighting can be tricky with the Legendary because of the implementation of HDR. You have to fiddle with the Calibration in Options; sometimes I have to set it to 1000 and sometimes I have to set it to 3000. Since I did not play Femshep I can understand she could be buggy because in the Legendary Edition they tried to unify her across the series.
Hi there! This is not something I plan on covering. It's an interesting concept but I play on PC and have only ever played the Legendary Edition so I'm probably not the right person to cover this.
