DUDE!!!!!!!!! You learn something new everyday, and I can't believe that obvious fact of the Dr you meet on Eden Prime, who's crazy, looked at the beacon as well! Damn that makes so much sense why he's freaking out! LMAO!!!!!! Oh man, love Mass Effect, played it so many times, and always, like yourself, thought he was just a bit nuts! Every playthrough, you learn something new!

I actually like Ashley as a charchter. She does have a racist side to her, but its hardly violently agressive, and as the series goes on she warms up to them a little. Look at how she sees Tali. I just think that with her back story her attitude is understandable. I would just rather it was possible to have more of a direct influence on softening her a little.

The first one is probably my favorite of the series. I know a lot of people prefer 2 to 1, but I think 1 has a better story, the Citadel feels so much more open and interesting, as well as the Normandy, and I liked the weapon and upgrade system more.

I like Ashley much more than Kaidan. Sure, she has some negative aspects, but at least she has character, and she's got (fairly amusing) snarky comments about everything. Kaidan on the other hand is as plain and uninteresting as anyone can be. His entire characterization is built around a single story about his time at the BAaT program.

Jon, I recently found your channel and I'm bloody loving it! The games, the unique series rules and your sense of humour make this channel an instant sub. Can't wait for more!

Great start to hands down my favorite entry in the series. Back when the series was more of an Rpg. So many decisions in this one where the others are a little more linear. This promises to be entertaining.

Decided to re watch this series and realised this was released 10 years ago, I remember checking daily for new episodes

I watched this 7 years ago when you first released this and I had just gotten the mass effect games, and I keep coming back to your content. It's genius, and I can't wait for more in the Legendary Edition. (Also, I got a bug on Virmire in my last original mass effect playthrough, and were able to hop back into the Mako in the salarian camp... and talk to Kirrahe while in the Mako. Abusing bouncy-castle physics to infiltrate the cloning facility in a tank was such a blast, wildly flailing through passages that were never supposed to be large enough for it. If I figure out what caused it I'll pass it on to you, in the hopes of you making a video out of it.)

I put so many hours into this game, so many play throughs! Mass Effect is definitely one of my favourite game series.

The lack of the Mass Effect 2 Insanity Run in the last Saturday made me happy to rewatch this series.

I'm just getting back into playing ME1 after a massive break from it so this is a great way to recap the plot :D

ohhh no hearing the ME1 theme is really emotional. it just sounds so hopeful and is all about space exploration and it's so lovely to listen to after the emotional hell that is ME3

Kotaku sent me here, excited to watch this. 10000000% agree on the Citadel being an amazing ending to ME3 and the series. I've played through all 3 games again just to replay the Citadel, it was absolutely perfect.

Ashley gets better as the games go on. If you save her (which I suspect Jon isn't going to), she appears to have shed at least some of that racism by ME3.

Just got through the first planet in SWKOTOR, and love the Carth Reference. I've literally been calling Carth "Kaiden" because I played Mass Effect first.

I've already watched this run once but I just love Mass Effect so I had to see it again. Any change of doing this for ME2 after Fallout 3 yolo is done? Or will you be too busy with Fallout 4?

Old series but I still love it. Gonna be trying to pick up the torch myself and see if I can’t do the entire series without ever using guns. Thankfully, having the additional powers from companions from my first run should make it a bit more possible in later entries.

I've been playing this since release and only just now realized that colonist has obviously used the beacon....

the first 2 ME games are among the best games ever made. That's why ME3 pissed me off so much. I romanced Miranda in ME2. Amazing. She is by far the most interesting (and hottest) LI in the game. Her story is incredibly sad as well, so watching her change with Shepard always brings tears to my eyes. In ME3, I barely get to see her. I would go on an hour long rant about the ending, but Angry Joe already did that.

I get what you mean when you say the opening cutscene shows off what Joker does and how cool he is, but there are plenty of scenes in ME2 and ME3 where Joker is doing some pretty amazing maneuvers in the Normandy, too. We just don't hear him explaining what he's doing.

Regarding Ashley's 'Racism': She isn't actually all that racist, she just complains about having foreign nationals on board a prototype extremely classified Alliance Warship. That isn't racism, its common sense, the only reason it doesn't backfire on Shepard is Plot Armor. In reality you can bet that a foreign national with access to national (not really the right term for a space based organization like the Alliance, but closest I can come up with) secrets is a severe security risk. Now, if you are going to call out Ashley on all her racist remarks why do you ignore all the alien's racism? The Council doesn't question Shepard's qualifications to be a Shepard, they say 'Is HUMANITY ready for this?' If a Turian had been up for the promotion to Specter they wouldn't be asking 'Are Turians ready for this?' they would just ask if that specific Turian is qualified. The entire Citadel hierarchy is inherently racist, there is even a chat with the VI on the Citadel where she refers to every non-asari/salarian/turian race as 'lesser'. The Volus had been part of the Citadel for two MILLENIA and are still second class citizens, despite their thorough influence throughout the galactic economy. In ME3 the Salarians will flat out let the galaxy be overrun by the Reapers rather than work with Krogan. The Turians first act upon discovering humanity was to destroy their explorer ship, run through a relay and conquer the first world they saw. Of all the people in the ME universe Ashley is one of the LEAST racist. It is only Shepard's plot gravity that attracts the least racist people in the galaxy to him/her (Liara, Kaiden, Tali). Ashley doesn't hate aliens, she doesn't want them to die, she isn't Cereberus at all. She only believes that humanity needs to look out for humanity first, something that every other race in the galaxy does for themselves, how exactly is that racist? Apart from this glaring inconsistency in your view I love this series. I hope you eventually do a ME2/3 playthrough! (Maybe even some other Bioware games like KotOR or DA).

If anyone else wants to do this, I recommend Sentinel because you can get Adrenaline Rush and then with Moon Base, Shock Trooper and get the cooldown down to like 30s. Every ability every 30s.

Technically as an adept you can pull off this challenge in ME2. Can't really replicate companions not using guns though. Also not possible in ME3 because of the slow motion sequences, but you could always roleplay that Jon has major amounts of adrenaline pumping through her that she opts to use her gun in those moments.

Imagine if Ashley was the one who one on the ship first instead of Jenkins, and she got killed by the recon drones

Huge Mass Effect fan here, I'm taking my time beating 3 though. I completely share your sentiments about Ashley--bad role model yo. Greatest franchise for sure.

You know what would be badass for Mass Effect 4 is that you start as any of the major races and if it goes like fallout or elder scrolls, you could gain ships and allies and be a warlord or a reform the military and rebuild the galaxy Andromeda is still cool but I wish they would stay in the milky way, I mean we never even been to Palaven!

Playing through the series right now, on my first playthrough of 2, having a lot of fun. ME2 is a massive improvement in gameplay over the first. Glad they got rid of the Mako, that was the worst thing about the first game, those boring uncharted planets that all looked/were the same where you used the Mako.

I like 1 and 2 more but I agree 3 is damn good as well. My main complaint about 3 is actually how easy it is when compared to the other 2 games. Inanity in ME3 is like the middle difficulty in ME2. Except the Citadel DLC, it's down right insane at points. Especially taking on 6 Shepards in the simulator.

Loooove the narration! Have to agree about Ashley--tried several times to make her a permanent teammate, but absolutely could not stand her racist bs! Guess who stayed behind with the nuke? Yep, Cmdr Williams, thank you very much (for volunteering, of course)! I confess, it never occurred to me to use biotics to this extent. I'm actually quite amazed at how easy it makes the first game. Now I'm going to have to try this...
