An avid hiker from Massachusetts lost his life during a climb on Mt. Washington. He succumbed to severe hypothermia, even after rescuers braved howling winds, driving rain, and snow to reach him.
Boston 25 obtained the last string of texts messages to his wife. She declined to speak on camera. One of the first texts shows he was getting worried.

My husband and I hike the White Mountains. We always take more than enough of food, water, clothing and supplies. You never know, the weather can change in an instant!

Sad, but preventable. Unfortunately, the relatively low elevations of the White Mountains are very deceptive even to experienced hikers, and there's also a false sense of security because you're not far away from civilization, but when winds are hurricane force or greater, and the higher summits are shrouded in freezing fog, a few miles to safety might as well be 10,000 miles to safety.

Still, I wouldn’t risk my life or anyone else’s that I’m with! I just finished reading “Where you’ll find me” and “The last traverse” Ty Gagnon. Incredible, heart wrenching stories!

IWhen I was in my 20's I was stationed in Ft. Devens, Mass, and a veteran boyfriend and,I did fast hikes to the top of Mr. Washington twice, and took shuttles back down. It was Summertime, and we took very little with us, small rucksacks, water and snacks. Even being in really amazing condition, it was REALLY HARD! At least half of the climb was boulders we had to maniveur thru, and you can't see the top nor much of where you've come from. If it weren't for the very clearly posted signs, and mile markers to the top, it could be devastating. NO WAY would I try Mt. Washington in bad weather

Another one, going alone for mountain climbing, but ending with tragedy! People never learn, the most important thing is to be safe!

In March 1989 I stopped in the Pinkham Notch visitor center at the base. A big sign inside warned of the potentially deadly weather conditions and how many have died hiking to the summit. It was in the 40s and clear at the base. I was in my 20s and in good shape from biking and hiking hills. It was less than 4 miles to the summit, I had warm clothes on and gloves so I thought I was prepared. I reached the summit about an hour later and it was in the 20s and covered in ice with 90mph gusts. Ate lunch at the summit then hiked back down.

So glad that people love the wilderness and are brave because I am not. But I will never understand how people put themselves in dangerous situations rather it’s weather or a wild animal attack. If you can’t carry a bag full equipment to stay warm or cool or weapons for protection you have no business going. This is a situation when you say must be your destiny because in the wilderness that area belongs to the wild to roam and we all know weather can be treacherous even looking out your windows at home. May he Rest In Peace and to his wife my condolences. Avoidable death for sure.
