Chris yes indeed and Im a S. African and the sound of those Bagpipes impregnate my soul. I also love the drum players swinging those drumsticks. Trusting that I'm using the correct terms here. In SA, I was lucky enough to join the cadet band, at school playing the bugle. Not what I wanted but was the only available opportunity. I was also taught to handle the mace. When I saw those drum majors, it made me think back 57 years. My late father-in-law, a Scottish soldier during WW2, introduced me to this music. It's great stuff!!!!

A yank of Scots descent, but I was 11 before I ever heard the pipes. It set a fire in my blood, and I *ran* to find the source of that glorious sound. It had stopped by the time I got there so I went door to door, asking if anyone knew -- and it turned out it was "Auntie" Ruth McLeod (from Lewis no less!) who was feeling homesick, and had put a record on. To this day, the sound of the pipes sets a fire in my soul.

I was this way all of my life, I love the bag pipes.( I am 64 years old). I knew some my heritage, for 40 years, but received the papers in 2016'. All my life I was amazed at how close in mannerisms I was to the Scottish. I found out that on my Dads side, I am the 13th generation cousin to King James 6th of Scotland/1st of England. (and that I worked with a friend for about 13 years and didn't know he was my cousin.) My ancestry went back to two more Kings in other empires other than Scotland. So you could be more than Scottish Royalty. Look at the portraits of the Scottish Kings and Queens, and any wood carving and pictures etc. that you can. You might be surprised to find you are looking at yourself or a family member. My daughter looks just like Prince Charles Edward Stewart and our faces are scattered all over the Royality. It seems that it isn't rare to be related to Royalty, but it is very rare to be a direct line to Royalty. And you most likely could be related to the direct line and more. Here's one that might surprise you, the Egyptians would vacation in England and Scotland. If you do research, do not disregard any strange names. I have a Blevins and a Pleasant for ancestors. And save everything you find, you might find more pieces to the puzzle later. I have always loved the bag pipes and now I know why I love them so...One thing I almost forgot, your Royalty will show. I have had people ask me if I was in the military ( I stood so straight), I never was, and people told my daughter that they could tell I was related to Royalty. it was my ancestory showing.

My sincerest thanks from the Blue Ridge of Virginia! My paternal ancestors reach back to St. Tears, Scotland. The clan Robinson, a sect of Clan Gunn. The pipes have always stirred my soul! I hope that one day, I can stand on the ground of my ancestors and talk to my relatives that remained in Scotland! A short story about bagpipes. My wife and I bought a small plot of land when my son was two. We put a small house on it. One afternoon shortly after moving in, I was mowing the yard and clouds starting moving in. Then I heard the pipes. At first, they were barely audible but after five min, I could hear them clearly over the lawn mower. My wife walked out of the house and asked if I heard them? I asked her, “You heard them too?” She had. I cut the mower off and walked up the road to see if I could tell where the pipes were coming from. We lived in the country and houses weren’t real close. I didn’t walk very far past my property before I couldn’t hear the pipes anymore. I walked back to my house and as I reached my driveway, I could hear them once more. Then the wind started to pick up. My wife and son were outside listening to the pipes. I looked up and the clouds had turned black and were swirling slowly. I grabbed my wife and son and ran inside. We could hear the pipes over the wind, rain and hail. The storm passed quickly and so did the pipes. We found out that just over the hill where there was a small lake, a tornado had touched down! I know it sounds unbelievable, but it’s true. More incredibly, over the ten years we lived there, three other very bad storms were predated with the pipes. The difference was that the next time I heard them, I made sure the dog, wife and kids were in the house first! We’re in the Blue Ridge Mountains, so we get storms, but we only heard the pipes before the worst. I asked all my neighbors if they played the pipes but none did. I asked if they played recordings and all said no. I shared my experiences and they all acted like I was crazy, so I didn’t bring it up again. But since moving from that land, I’ve never experienced the warnings again. To this day, we look back at our time there as the best time of our lives. We were truly blessed!

My fathers family is from Ireland, and Im a musician, I almost always get emotional with a tear or a few when I hear serious bagpipes... I think its in my genes, or collective unconscious, dna? Something reacts like a fire in my heart. This also happens when I watch very irish movies, The Boxer, with Daniel Day Lewis, had me crying just seeing and hearing my people. A lot of difficulty they went through over the years, I would think its normal for you to fry if you are Scottish.... These cultures have a beauty and righteous ness/innocence that the mainstream world doesnt consider important. Like American Indians, Africa. Modern gadget and high technology society think they are onto something more important. But technology culture leads to emptiness and death. God and traditions are where life and the heart is. Christ the saviour for all.

My great uncle was buried with his bagpipes in Canada. He moved there from Scotland. I barely remember him in the 1950's playing his pipes. I was so intrigued and have loved the music all my life. Proud to have Scottish blood running through my veins! I'm from the Clan Anderson and also related to the Ingrams, Walkers, McDonalds, and Boynes. Probably a few more as well. Thank you so much for this music.

Imagine being british in like 1406 and hearing 600 drummers and pipers charging at you while the ground is shaking.
@grahamlait1969
@grahamlait1969 4 года назад
In 1406 you would never have heard 600 drummers and pipers charging at you. The pipe band was an invention of the Scottish regiments of the British army and didn't exist until the 19th century. In 1406 you'd probably have heard one piper, stumbling through the heather. He'd have probably been drowned out by the howling savages charging at you. Each clan chief had his own piper and they never played as a band at that time.... and why 1406? The only Scottish 'battles' in 1406 were the usual nasty little power struggles that perennially rent Scotland, as often as not ending in stalemates, then going on to have somebody getting their throat slit, usually treacherously. If you can imagine a country ruled by mafiosi for centuries in a constant state of vendetta, then you'll have a fairly good idea of what Scotland was like back then. Indeed, if you were to translate the Scottish word 'clan' into Italian, guess what you'd come up with... That's right, you've got it, the word would be mafia.
