I recently found your channel and have loved watching the videos on it. I do understand you want to keep the forest feeling and being off-grid with the wilderness around the house, but it really looks like the panels get a lot of shading by mid-afternoon. It might be really helpful to cut down just 1-2 more trees and bring in an extra hour of good sunshine.

Man that is a extremely expensive system. I'm in Australia - those SOK batteries are $3,000 AUD EACH. and those Victron products would easily be $20+ K all up, the Quattro is at least $5K and then there are the panels.... So I would estimate your setup is about $50K+ USD???? I mean you are using the BEST branded products but can you please tell us how much the total cost is please?. I look at solar and love it, but I also look at how much it costs me in Power bills a year ( here in Sydney, Australia I pay around $3200 AUD a year for a 5 br house. Solar panels last about 15-20 years at most, so for many people it is not worth it, but if you live in the woods then different story. Have you ever looked at hydro power? - there is a YT channel Gridlessness - they have this awesome Canadian made mini hydro turbine.....
@CurrentConnected

Comparing the cost of an off-grid system to a a power bill when existing grid is in place will leave you shocked...However, when you compare the cost of an off-grid system to the cost of a utility install when the lines are miles away, it quickly becomes far more cost effective to build your own system.

Also, full systems ship truck freight, while websites can never estimate truck rates so they tend to over estimate big "cart" shipping. There are also b2b discounts which websites almost never have except for really large companies like HP or DELL. I will be very interested to see how this performs in winter. I live at similar latitude, have slightly larger system on PV side than this one (but only 75% battery capacity), but still find the generator runs every couple days just managing a house load and small apartment, no heavy demand tools. I do like the battery rack system vs one or two large batteries, but the biggest issue I find is there just isn't enough sun, long enough, to catch up in winter. Can't wait to see the progress.

Just as a rough estimate, $300/KWh for the batteries, so 60x300=$18000 $360/panel 24x360=$8640 The inverters are probably in the $4000 range for the two inverters and another $3-5000 for the other equipment. Racking and wiring probably another $2500.. They are pushing $40K plus the shipping container.

This setup could have been done for 2/3rds of what this system cost if they went with all in ones and different batteries, but I'm guessing they got a lot of it discounted because youtube...
@court2379
@court2379 2 года назад
@@FJB2020 I think 2/3 is pushing it, maybe 25% less than what this all cost retail. The trick will be getting the current output they have here. The batteries are the single largest cost, but if they got them for around $300/KWh that is the going price right now. The panels you can definitely find cheaper in another brand. Up to 1/4 that brand's cost. The warranty won't be as good, but I don't feel that matters. In ten years if they aren't working to spec, new technology will be available that you will want anyway, so saving 1/2 to 3/4 of the panel cost now is just good sense to me. The warranty only matters for the first few years. The inverters and other equipment seems like they were pricey. There are other brands with combine functions at lower cost than the separate units for each task. As a package deal though it might not be a bad.
@FJB2020
@FJB2020 2 года назад
@@court2379 Those SOK batteries cost $360kWh and other server rack ones are around $297kWh (or $250kWh if you source yourself) and they could have gone with 4 all in ones for less than half of what they paid for that Victron stuff.. Just saying they could have done this much cheaper and simplified their system with other gear that is on par with this setup..
@court2379
@court2379 2 года назад
@@FJB2020 My numbers are a rough estimate without going and finding the exact components. I don't think this setup is the cheapest way to go either, but there are many factors going it such a selection. First we don't know what they paid, and they may have received a significant discount making this the cheapest option for them. Second their high draw conditions to run industrial equipment isn't the norm and may have dictated certain components that wouldn't be required in most setups. I don't know without studying the cheaper equivalent. Third if you don't know how to size the equipment, you are paying someone else to, which leads to additional cost. Fourth, sometimes you pay for a brand name because it is trusted to work long term. Many of these newer companies are unproven, most offer warranties that aren't worth anything either because they won't honor them, or the company won't be around in five years to make the warranty claim. Upfront cost isn't the only thing to consider. Hopefully someone reading this thread can understand what we are saying about this not being the most cost effective solution upfront for most people, and then make a decision with more information. It still might be the right system for them, but likely not the lowest cost option.

Here in aussie we dont do anything less than 240V :P The problem is alot of people also dont realise ya dont have to have the lifepo4 batteries BMS's connected to anything unless ya want to monitor it which turns people off
@evil17
@evil17 2 года назад
Yes Trent, 240v is definitely better than 120v, more power with less copper. I guess that is one thing we have got right/er. Go Oz!

wait. you say those charge controllers can handle up to "5,500w of solar" each. and, yet, you have 10,680w hooked up to only one. what am i missing??
@CurrentConnected
@CurrentConnected 2 года назад
The rest gets clipped off. They can output 5500w but you can have 7600w on each input. The controller will feed through only as much as it needs

@DannyCreech

BIG MISTAKE!!! People like you go on and on about how great solar is but at the end of the video you do NOT say how much the system cost! That is the ONLY thing people want to know. I'm not talking the wood to hold the controllers or the shipping container or the solar panel mount. How much did all the solar panels, batteries, controllers and basically everything from the panels to and including the CB Box. From what I have done in my research, a system like that at full retail cost about $50,000! So, tell us, what did all this cost if you had to pay retail including having the guy come out and hook it all up?

Ambition Strikes gets that question a lot, so they made a great video breaking the whole cost down! You can find that breakdown (including a spreadsheet) here: ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-ccBM0iSvqIc.html

How much will the complete system cost?
@brynsmith414
@brynsmith414 2 года назад
I’m a little concerned about the solar panel support, I’m already seeing quite a bit of defection in the horizontal supports, I can see some of the panels getting damaged with a heavy snow load. The vertical supports are all good and it’ll be easy to resolve
@whattheschmidt
@whattheschmidt 2 года назад
The array will be closer to vertical in the winter, so snow load would likely be minimal.
@brynsmith414
@brynsmith414 2 года назад
@@whattheschmidt that will help in regards to snow load, only issue is that by doing that will increase the wind load which will result in more rapid solar panel defection. Time will tell, I’d like to see how they worked out their load calculations for this array
@greggv8
@greggv8 2 года назад
I won't be surprised if a storm with high wind speeds twists that mounting. Needs more torsional rigidity. A triangulated space frame would be lighter while being much stiffer. I'd have put a bit of gap between the panels vertically to let some wind through and no gap horizontally. Snow could catch in the horizontal gaps, making it not slide off easily, or at least building up in those two lines to partially shade the panels.

Hi Patrick! Check out the newest video that just went up, it explains how to use an incandescent light bulb as a safer alternative to a resistor. ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-DOrJ5AH9yjM.html

That little array is going to have about 12,000 pounds on it per foot of snow accumulation. You might need to beef those supports up a bit.

@Eric Yeah those things would get ripped off in Arkansas storms and I've known people from Idaho and they've seen derechos before, Idk why they did it that way. Our ground mount arrays are built to take drunk 4 wheelers and side by sides in stride plus 110 mph wind.

This is a nice video as I have been watching their well presented videos and didn't know CC was working with it. I recently came across CC and they were helpful with a couple of simple emails ... these things are way out of my league but my tiny tiny system is quite a project for me ... Victron and such ... the quality, though higher funds, is wise spending. Some can be a penny wise and a pound foolish .................

Amazing system. I'm assuming this system is fully sponsored, if not what is the estimated ROI? I have a much smaller system and the ROI is terrible. I would expect to upgrade or replace MPPT chargers, Lipo's and inverters of my system before the system has paid for itself in power generation. Did y'all look at wind also?

Nice system. I have almost the exact system with dual (split-phase) 5kVa instead of 10kVa Quattro's. I hope you have better luck with the SmartSolar MPPT RS 450/100 than I have. I'm on a 2nd unit that was originally installed in April, now acting like the unit that failed. Look for random MPPT and battery charging dropouts. They improved with firmware v1.10, but haven't gone away.
