How cool is that! I wonder if you could hide an object tracking camera in the frame and make the portraits' gaze follow people too... 😳

Could totally be done, cameras can be tiny. The trick would be a wide enough view to cover the space, maybe multi camera? And then motion tracking software. Actually tracking faces would be harder, but just "person shaped thing moved on this direction" isn't too bad. Would be fun.

You could do the classic thing where you print and paint a face, but instead of the face going outwards from the photo its recessed. Thats how the follow illusion works where it looks like the face is always looking at you

to make them look even more like real paintings there is a cool trick I have seen in Universal Studios. If you paint a transparent lacquer onto some sort of clear matte foil and dry it with a hair dryer, you'll get that "cracked oil paint" effect if you place this infront of the screen. It looked very realistic to me

The gloss of the TV screen gives it a bit away, this technique sounds like a great way to enhance the illusion!!!

If they made giant color E-ink screens, they would be perfect, because they wouldn't actually give of light.
@SladeWeston
@SladeWeston 2 года назад
They do. The new E Ink Gallery Plus screens are designed for advertising and signage and could do exactly what you're suggesting. Of course eink motion refreshes can be a bit choppy and would likely spoil the illusion. However, with the right lighting, it should be easy to hide the fact that they are screens. Particularly if he applies a filter to the video to simulate paint impasto and texture.

I'm almost certain that someone already said it, but the Disney themeparks as well as wome others are using a similar effect on some of their rides. To make it mor realistic they applied a thin layer of canvas on top of the displays to matten the image and to give it some texture. If you are okay with permanently modifying the displays, this can be easily done by oneself.

This is a super cool idea, and I want to make a suggestion for how the video that goes on the screen should be shot. For a set of theater shows, I did essentially the same thing in that we had television screens that were part of the stage that during a show we would have what I called video props. I was a video producer for the theater, and so we wanted to set the scene using a pair of televisions, they were flat panel televisions, and what we discovered was that if we used a regular image or a video, it would be way too bright both for being on stage, and on camera. What I ended up doing was making the images be significantly dimmer than you would think he would want for a TV image. By doing this, it made the lighting in the image on the screens seem like it was part of the stage instead of a TV. So the short of it is, whatever you shoot, make it be close to 10% of the brightness that you normally have for video. You can do this with the controls on the flat panel, but I don’t recommend that. Instead, it’s better to do it in the source material. Especially if you’re using OLED panels, which I have a really good blacks and good color Fidelity. That will mean that it will be able to show the subtleties of a much dimmer image and look much more realistic. Of course, to really sell it, I would imagine you’re going to have somebody make the video look like it’s a painting by using filters like you can find in Photoshop or after effects. But to me, what really sells it is if the image appears to be an actual painting which does not have transmissive lighting. Instead, a real painting would only reflect some of the light in the room. That’s why the image Hass to be so much dimmer.

My first thought is "man, that's cool." My second thought is "man, I wish I could afford to pay professional artisans to bring my imagination to life." Which is not meant to diminish Mr. Harris (Mr. Patrick Harris? I assume Patrick is a middle name but I don't actually know) in any way, just to acknowledge that this video is about pros doing their jobs well, and I sure hope they got paid for their time! My third thought is that I would be genuinely interested in a time/cost/durability/usability comparisson between these frames and ones made from wood. This is totally the sort of thing one could make from wood - indeed, the goal was to make the high-tech 3d-printed frame look like an antique and those antiques would have been wood and brass. Now obviously 3d printing is a heck of a lot faster than hand carving from wood, but how would CNC carving compare? Which method would need more time and effort for final finishing? And so on. My final thought loops back to my second. Paying to turn one's imagination into reality has been possible since humans invented the idea of paying for things. But the effort require to produce those objects has been steadily dropping all that time, meaning the cost has been dropping. I could never afford something like this, right now - but I feel like a time is coming when "semi-custom" is the norm for all physical goods. Imagine going onto a website, "building" a bookshelf or picture frame or coffee maker in much the same way you "build" a car on the web these days, combining a number of stock templates in various ways, maybe uploading some custom images for engraving; and then a 3d printer + CNC spits out the basic parts, a finishing crew cleans them up and paints them, appropriate professionals install things like electronics, and then the object gets shipped to you. In a couple of weeks, one might have a not-quite-custom but still individualised item for a very affordable cost. That's an exciting thing to imagine.
@piorism
@piorism 2 года назад
"and then a 3d printer + CNC spits out the basic parts" Well, you might want to give CNC machining and 3d printing a try to get a feel of how long these things take ...
@davydatwood3158
@davydatwood3158 2 года назад
@@piorism Perhaps you might try buying a dictionary. And then using it to look up the word "imagine." Because clearly you don't know what it means.
@David-yo5ws
@David-yo5ws Год назад
Your third thought made me think that a wooden piece of that size, is going to be made of 4 pieces (dried properly and aged properly) that have to be pinned/slotted/glued together. Over time, I would expect that the frame would warp somewhat. Why? The electronic screen would be like a 100+ watt heater and over time, I think, would dry out the wood. Normally the frame would be exposed to the humidity and temperature of the room only.
@davydatwood3158
@davydatwood3158 Год назад
@@David-yo5ws Good points; though of course most of the plastics used in FDM will absorb moisture and risk warping over time as well. And it's hard to say how much heat that screen puts out - a lot of flat screens run quite cool. Still the material preparation time for the 3d print is certainly a lot less than it would be for wood.

I have made a similar (much smaller lol) project and highly recommend an air intake and exhaust fan. The display will build up quite a bit of heat (made my RPI run at roughly 85 deg C) and the heat will cause the display and all other electronics to throttle, degrade faster, and generally run less efficiently. My biggest concern would be the illumination source of the display (either OLED panel or LED backlight).

Also, a spotlight shining over the portrait (but only around the frame and surroundings) would help hide the fact that it's a glowing screen.
