San Jose urban development was NOT the reason for the decline of salmon habitat in this area. it was the silver and mercury mining in 1800s. The mining was done with water canon blasting hills away and that clogged the streams and rivers in Santa Clara valley.

Hey Adam that’s really cool. I remember as a kid in the late 60’s and 70’s my dad would take us fishing at the Salinas River at the train trestle. It was maybe a mile or two from the ocean inlet. We would catch Striper,Salmon,Herring and the biggest Carp you’ve ever seen. My dad was using a large daredevil spoon and hooked a big fish and as he was fighting it the hook released, shot out of the water and stuck in his temple. He left me and my brother there ( maybe 10 years old), drove himself to Fort ORD hospital. He came back and fished some more. Those were different times. Then a big flood came and ruined the river for many years. Sometimes people wait until things get really bad in our environment to do something about it.

Back in the 80's I caught a 24 lb salmon in a creek right under I-80 that went up to Green Valley in Cordelia, I thought the fish was going to jump out of the creek (the creek was only 3-4 feet wide at certain areas), also caught a 7 lb steel-head from the same creek. We used to walk and fish the small creeks in Davis, Napa, Vacaville, Fairfield for small trout for something to do......

It's very hard to get one on a lower, keep in mind that salmon in a river aren't there to feed. They are only there to spawn , that is why most are caught on row and when they do bite it is so light you can hardly notice. My family fishes in the Trinity near Weaverville CA.
