@@Z-Ack I've got a 20" roller bearing lying around I got from work, it's a little worn out, it was pulled out and replaced after a gigantic gearbox rebuild, but the thing weighs like 90 pounds, I can't imagine how much that thing cost new. It's a whole different game price-wise when you get into the big stuff. I wanted it as a display item in my man cave, (for whenever I get a man cave lol), my boss told me to get rid of it so I did😂. It's also got like 25 pounds of brass in it, it's going to look nice once I clean and polish it all up.

The big bearing was supposed to be packed with grease and it was missing a seal. It's meant for low speeds as well
@SCWW
@SCWW 2 года назад
Pretty much any bearing that has the bearings exposed should be packed with grease. The fact that the bearing that didn’t spin freely, didn’t spin, is a good indicator that it can be used at high speed because as the grease heats up it will spin more freely.

Not necessarily on the speed thing. 1800 rpm is not an uncommon industrial motor speed. I've seen a few motors in the shop that took bearings that large that run at that speed although they tend to start runing slower around that size. You could potentially have a 5.5inch output shaft on a motor using one that size. Your right about the seal though. It does not take much contamination to jam a bearing. They also dont like runing loaded or at high speed with no lube. @Jesper Jensen, commonly in motors the bearings are either fully sealed with a measured amount of grease inside from the factory or they are open and theres a cap behind to bearing to hold grease in. This allows more grease to be added over time as the old wears out. Open bearings in a greaseable motor generally last longer before needing to be replaced if the millwrights actually follow the manufacturers recommended greasing schedule. Sealed bearings are effectively a wear item. Clocks ticking once they are put into service and you can make a reasonable guess as to how many hours they will last depending on the service speed and HP of the motor.
@fang4853
@fang4853 Год назад
If he showed the part number we could see the speed it is rated for. The shaft sizes where also incorrect it should have been so tight where you cant pull it off with your hand, only a gear puller or a deadblow hammer. Rookie mistake.

I use to be the go-to repair guy for a piece of equipment rated to 18,000 rpm (We never went over 10,000). It had four of those large cage bearings like you have. There was active oil misting of the bearings. If the mister was running too much oil (more than a single drop per minute turned to mist and split 4 ways) the machine would start bogging down. The areas of the machine where the bearings were would get hot. Very hot. During normal operation those areas would become warm to the touch but not hot. When the oil ran heavy the machine would get hot enough to smell, and smoke would rise as it burned off any oil on the clamshell housing. I replaced the older oiler with a new one, and mounted it in a location that was not influenced by the machines vibration. Never had that problem again. Over 15 years. Set it and forget it beyond refilling the reservoir every month. And the point is? Cage bearings are made to run clean except for a microscopic film of light oil. At least when they're being run fast. Under perfect conditions those large bearings you had would easily run 10k or more.

While working in a Salmon Cannery in SE Alaska, I took one of the larger used machinery bearings (apprx 2in Wide x 8in Dia), cleaned it up and added a few drops of 30W oil and then hit the side of the ball bearings w/ some Shop Air while holding the internal Race w/ my hand. I'm guessing it hit around 10K RPM before I dropped it to the Warehouse Concrete floor. It sat there and just made sparks for a second or two and then accelerated the entire 80 yrds length of the Warehouse and went thru the metal siding on the other end of the building. There was a Semi Trailer parked in the loading pit next to wall that took a hit. Bearings are of such tight tolerances that any grit or dirt is gonna add a lot of rotational resistance if it doesn't stop rotation entirely. Ur little water jet experience w/ all the cutting slurry splashing up into the bearings was bound to be a bust. I think the plastic and lower tolerance bearings worked because of their "sloppy" build tolerances.

Top tip, with ball races point your water/air jet at about 20 degrees to the ball cage not the external diameter, that size bearing your using should reach around 40k to 50k RPM (air is better and may even achieve higher revs before disintergrating) you will have to make improvements to your containment system!

Needle bearings, tapered bearing, deep groove ball bearings etc, boys.

Its not the size of the bearing that makes that one bearing harder to turn. Its the seal. Pop that out and I'd bet it would spin as freely as the larger one though then it would have the issue of the garnet getting inside like your big one did. Also I'd wadger that bearing is new. Those seals will wear in a bit with time in service and will spin more freely up to the point when the grease starts wearing out, then things will turn alot worse. a large motor's speed is not regulated by the bearings, ideally those would be completely frictionless but we have to make do with as close to frictionless as possible. the speed of an AC motor is regulated by the windings and how many cycles per second your power is being feed to the motor. Basicly if the motor is designed to spin at 600 rpm that magnetic field the electricity is generating will be rotating at 600 rpm and the rotor will accelerate to catch up. the rotor cant spin any faster than that magnetic field unless your spining the shaft with something else (such as in a generator) so there is no reason to try and regulate the speed with the bearings. That would just generate extra heat that is already hard enough to get rid of. I couldn't quite read the bearing part number. best frame was still a little smudged but looked like it could have been a 6012 bearing. About right for the stated size as that would be about 3.5inch outer diameter, closer to 2 and 3/8th's inner diameter. You didnt even come close to maxing out the speed on those bearings. I've seen motors come through the shop I work at with service speeds up to 3600 RPM. Some of the larger servo motors I repair can be 6k rpm max with a 6308 bearing in the drive end, the outer diameter would be about that size. Also its kind of cute that you think that 6217 bearing is massive. Had to help install a 6328 a few weeks back. over 12 inches accross and 50 pounds. Thats geting into the large end of what my shop can handle on site as motors big enough to need much larger than that will start maxing out our cranes. but the 6217? theres probably 3-4 used ones of those in our scrap bin at any given time.

Use a sealed bearing Pop the seal Use brake cleaner Put the seal back on No garnet in bearing Spin faster Use retaining compound on inner race to prevent rotation on tube
