A Dingwall, a $150 subscription to slate audio and a $130 plugin - then just get someone who can actually play and you're good to go for as little as $3000!

Everyone say, you need a Dingwall, and the answer is NO !!! You just need a good bass, with good sustain and harmonic, You can have exactly the same tone with a cheap Ibanez with good pickups ! You can have exactly the same tone with a Squier bass 5 strings Active!
@MOMetalProductions
@MOMetalProductions Год назад
Correct! To me the most important thing is playing hard and consistently and having fresh strings 🤘

@@MOMetalProductions Yeahh Totally agree, and the fresh strings 👍🤘
@The_Metal_Mechanic
@The_Metal_Mechanic 8 месяцев назад
Yep. There are multiple ways to achieve this, but a used LTD for around $300 with a set of EMGs or Fishmans will get you far. Just make sure the strings are fresh and intonated with the bass set to your desired action.

Glad to see someone else saying this, almost anytime you see a Dingwall its for modern metal music, and metal bass tone is going to be compressed, distorted, and EQ'd so much you won't recognize it, just look at how many plugins he used for the bass tone. Dingwall makes great basses, they have a versatile pickup configuration and they are sexy af, but if you can't afford one Ibanez has tons of sexy options for half the price. That being said.... I'ma get a Dingwall some day for sure, to go with my 4 Ibanez and 2 Schecters 😬

Such a wall of plugins for such a bass tone is something you definitely don't want.
@MOMetalProductions
@MOMetalProductions Год назад
If you don't like the tone, fair enough. I disagree on the wall of plugins thing though, in my opinion it's all about getting the sound you desire. Getting it through 0 or 20 plugins doesn't matter to me at least 😊
@alyctro8158
@alyctro8158 Год назад
@@MOMetalProductions No, i like the tone. I'm saying it could be simplified. Down to 3 modules tops. And using 20 plugins does matter to those with less processing power.

that is a really interesting way to approach mixing the tone. I wouldnt normally start with something so gritty and eq later but now I really want to try mixing it this way and see what happens. thanks for the vid awesome single as well!
@MOMetalProductions
@MOMetalProductions Год назад
Thanks! I really like to commit to a tone that is 90% of what I know I want it to sound like in the mix. Then I feel I can be more confident in making bigger eq changes if necessary to fit it in with the other instruments if I am working only with a single audio file.

Sounds awesome! If I may ask (and if you can remember after over a year :D): Which of the OwnHammer SVT-10 IRs did you use here exactly? The name got cut of in the UI after "OH 410 AMPG SVT-10 CUT ...". Is it CND, DYN, MIX or RBN? And with or without "EQ" in the filename?

nice one, I`m more struggling to level up the bass to all other instruments rather the tone itself. Just can`t hear the bass properly in the mix to make right decisions. Any recommendations here?
@such.ukr.nu.metalcore
@such.ukr.nu.metalcore Год назад
Buy some good monitors, Cali for example, and do some acoustic treatment. Glenn Fricker told a lot about this. You just cant mix a bass properly, if you cant hear it.)

@@such.ukr.nu.metalcore ok, but I work in headphones because of others. Previously I had Yamaha studio monotors but didn`t work
@such.ukr.nu.metalcore
@such.ukr.nu.metalcore Год назад
@@insertanynameyouwant5311 1 - what brand of headphones do you use? 2 - I'm assuming that you used low price segment of Yamaha. If I'm right - so kinda hard to expect that big company to make some decent gear in low price segment - they are giving more attention to development and promotion of their flagman products. And besides this - there are also possibility of having a flawed model/series of gear. Also! For bass clarity, you may want to try to cut out everything below 30-40 Hz in kick drum bus.
@such.ukr.nu.metalcore
@such.ukr.nu.metalcore Год назад
@@insertanynameyouwant5311 aaaand! Did you had an acoustic treatment in your room when used Yamaha studio monitors?
@MOMetalProductions
@MOMetalProductions Год назад
My recommendation would be to get a decent pair of headphones and sonarworks to have a flat-ish spectrum when listening. Having proper bass from your monitors require 1. Good monitors and 2. Good treatment so when starting our I'd definitely recommend headphones when it comes to bass. Next tip is to use reference tracks that you like the sound of and use them to match the level of the bass in your mixes to make sure you don't over- or underbalance the mix volume wise. /Mattias

It's using the heavy saturation mode. Put the cab on afterwards and then adjust drive to taste. Less drive gives more string definition and more makes it gel more woth the guitars. It can be automated up or down as well to fit different sections' energy 😊

No matter what i do i can never get my distorted bass to gel with my guitars to where it all sounds like one unit. Keeping my bass all mono makes the guitars on the sides stand out. I want a cohesive unit. What am i doing wrong? Should i make the distorted part of the bass stereo and the clean low end bass mono?

This is too much processing and an overcooking. You can get the same result with way less plugins if you rethink the whole chain and ask yourself why you are adding each plugin.
@MOMetalProductions
@MOMetalProductions 8 месяцев назад
Results is the keyword here for me. If I am getting the results I am after with 10 plugins instead 3, what is the difference as long as my CPU holds up? What listeners will hear won't change if it's the exact same results, and you don't get points for elegance when someone streams a track on Spotify. It's like cooking a meal and saying you could have reached the same results by using way less spices. Okay fine, but does it taste good? If the answer is yes, who cares what spices you used?
@GrMfull

Nowadays, all bass sounds like that. I personnaly hâte that "kwank" tone, so robotic, no natural. Matter of taste ...

Yeah but this is a Metal Mix, a clean bass tone would just not glue well with the Guitars and the Genre, plus it helps so that we could hear it on small speakers and that it doesn’t get buried in the mix.
@jobelewis6416

How about the drums that sound larger than life, vocals that are compressed as hell for consistency etc, super distorted guitars (are they allowed to be this distorted?😉). It’s called metal, you can hate it but don’t have to state it
