OLD but GOLD!! Pratt & Whitney engine spool up! Corsair International operates the last three Boeing 747s in France, as Air France retired its own Jumbo Jets in 2016. The aircraft that operated my flight (reg: F-HSEA, previously owned by United, N188UA), which was a 25-year old baby at the time, just returned from China where it underwent a Check D in order to extend its lifetime beyond 2020. Corsair International does not seem to have plans to replace the three 747, and it's very good news for us, avgeeks!!
Flying in a Boeing 747 and hearing its melodious engines (Pratt & Whitney PW4000 here) is always an inestimable pleasure, even more now that these birds are getting rare. French West Indies airports are lucky to see the 747 still operated, as Corsair primarily sends them to Point-à-Pitre and Fort-de-France, along with Saint-Denis (Reunion Island) and Maurice.
It's not difficult to see (or hear) the age of this aircraft. For example, the material around the windows is getting a yellow tint, just like the ceiling. Or the absence of mood-lighting. In this video, you will hear some weird noises as well when the aircraft is turning, surely caused by friction somewhere in the nose wheel steering mechanism. The age of the aircraft might also be the reason behind the late departure. In addition to late passengers, we also faced technical issues in the ECS (a failed component in the cabin temperature regulation system).
Despite the delayed departure (2h40 delay, not the airline's fault tbh), I've had a good flight, mostly due to a nice and friendly crew. The drawback is that I missed my following flight to Fort-de-France, Martinique, and that I've been transferred on a later flight, which had itself a 1h30 delay. I was not very lucky this day. Good point is that the delay was enough for a sunset approach is PTP, as you'll see in the next video.
Enjoy!

The 747 is the perfect airplane: it's fast, it's quiet and is iconic. The only problems are maintenance and fuel consumption. I think that a 747-400 is more maneuverable than an A380. I have traveled on a 744ER from Madrid to Greece, full of 500 people + cargo and it only took off in 20 seconds. Nothing for a near to 20 year old 747-400. (EC-KQC).
@TheFlyingFrenchmanHD
@TheFlyingFrenchmanHD 6 лет назад
Thanks for your comment! First of all, the 747 is far from quiet. It's the second noisiest airplane I've ever travelled on. Secondly, you don't need full fuel tanks to go to Greece from Madrid, which is why it took off faster than if it was going to LAX. I've had the opportunity to take a 747 full of passengers, cargo and fuel from FDF to Paris and believe me, the take off was not fast at all. It needed almost the entire 10,827 feet runway. But I agree with you, it's an iconic aircraft and a technological marvel ;)
@kingghidorah8106
@kingghidorah8106 6 лет назад
Fernousdu972 HD Aviation It's quiet compared to other aircraft of its time, "relatively quiet". And yes I know you don't need full fuel to go from Madrid to Greece. I just say that the 747 is still a very capable aircraft and still manages to go to little airports like Rostock Laage; in such airport an A340-300 can't operate.

I just say that the 747 is still a very capable aircraft and still manages to go to little airports like Rostock Laage; in such airport an A340-300 can't operate. The Airbus A380 is indeed slower; its body shape is made for comfort, not for speed. An empty A380 will take off still more smoothly than a Boeing 747. When the first 747 was made there was still the idea of "speed" over "comfort". The wing airfoil of a 747-400 is very similar to a fighter plane. It is still indeed more maneuverable than an A380. And at least in Madrid airport, the few Wamos Air 747s I see are way quieter than Air Europa and Iberia's *brand new*. A330-200s. And as I flew in both 747 and A330, the 747 is very noisy from inside, because it's not as well sealed as the A330s.
@kingghidorah8106

Did you notice the Vapor formation before they took off? It’s caused by the suction into the engine causing and low air pressure and thus vapor in the air flashes to a visible water fog. It stops once there is sufficient air speed to supply enough volume of air to keep the inlet air pressure sufficiently high.

When I heard the pilots making his announcement with the destination, I was like is he wrong as it happens from time to time, then I saw the description. Did you miss the direct flight to FDF?Indeed we can see and hear that the 747 are getting old, with main gear noise when turning around. Corsair could have invested in deep Cabin renovation as they knew they were keeping the QOTS till 2020, with better video screen... but as you said it’s the last airline operating the 747 so that is fantastic..
@TheFlyingFrenchmanHD
@TheFlyingFrenchmanHD 6 лет назад
Thanks for your comment! I booked my journey to Martinique via PTP. So with the ORY-PTP flight being 2 hours late, I missed my ast flight to FDF. I've been given a seat on the 10:30 pm flight to FDF with Air Antilles, which has been 1 hour late itself... I've been luckier than that in my life. I think the IFE is far from the best, but it's overall good. At least for flights to FWI where the airlines are not keen on investing much in updating their cabins...

Thank you very much for your comment! Yep. That's very good news! I think overall it's a good airline. The problem is that all the airlines flying routes to FWI operate very high density aircraft (including 9-abreast A330s or 10-abreast A350s). Corsair is no exception unfortunately. @@TheFlyingFrenchmanHD , it's true that I've never been on a narrow body aircraft flying trans-Atlantic, they wouldn't have enough fuel, plus the first class on narrow body airliners have much more limited sources (and doesn't have business class). Speaking of airliners, I've never been sure on why once popular airlines went out of business. TWA was one of the most popular airlines back in the 1980s. It was the airline me and my family travelled on the most, and I even remember hearing other people say it was their favorite airline. TWA, United, and American were considered "the big 3" in the 1980s. Now TWA is long gone and American and United merged into one airline. TWA also had been around since the 1940s and was a propeller plane airliner for early plane travelers. And there were the fairly popular airlines gone obsolete such as Eastern, Pan Am, and Braniff. And then there were the airlines which were less popular back then such as Delta and Continental which really grew after Eastern, TWA, and Pan Am went out of business. I guess my point is that I'm not sure why airlines with so many passengers doing such great business went out of business.
@tristana2955
@tristana2955 4 года назад
Alvex Ok that’s not true about narrow body planes not being able to fly transatlantic flights. The Boeing 757 makes these flights and British airways uses an A319 to fly one of its flights between London/JFK.

Skip to 7:58 sec. and then 18:48 sec. (You're welcome) This Boeing is going! But If it ain't Rolls Royce, there is no rejoice? They sound excessively whiny once in the air at full throttle. But maybe they all sound like that. You wanna know how powerful these engines are? If you are standing a mere 10 feet in front of them you'll get sucked in and shred to mince meat. You'll get sucked in so hard and fast, you will chip the blades. IF you are standing a mere 20 feet behind them at full throttle, the blast force will snap your neck.

@TheFlyingFrenchmanHD
@TheFlyingFrenchmanHD 6 лет назад
That may be because the 747 is becoming rare. Because back in time there was a good bunch of 747s powered by these P&W engines. For example, UA's 747s, some of CX's 747s, SQ's 747s, CA's 747s and many others had P&W engines so they were quite used. I agree, I love them too ;)

I think that's because it's a 747, an older model. The newer big commercial aircrafts are the 777s and A 330s, which have more powerful engines and can move even faster. And they're the ones we've become more used to now.
