Vex's arrow got through _because_ it wasn't magical. Percy's gun, while vengeance-fueled, is magic, and Vax's daggers are magic as well. Hers is the only ranged weapon able to breach an anti-magic range shield.
The anti-magic hadn’t hit yet. Delilah effectively used the Shield spell against Percy, but Vex got through it. Anti-Magic didn’t start until the Orb happened.
@@sage_justice1383 I assumed she cast one of the 'anti-spell' protection orbs, there are like 5 different versions in the books. Given that Grog didn't get close enough and everything else was magic...
you're saying Keyleth saved Vex in order to get Vax, but you forgot she kinda rejected him last episode. She wasnt saving Vex for Vax, she was saving Vex because she truly cares about her.
@@SweetLitzLM That wasn't really a rejection either. You aren't wrong in saying she saved Vex because she cared about her and not for some ulterior motive. But Kiki's response to Vax is "I cannot handle a relationship right now because responsibilities + anxiety" and not "Naah, I don't wanna."
@@beoborf8877 yeah yeah, I didn't mean as a rejection as "I don't like you" I meant as a "I don't want it right now" which is still a rejection. And it's not even something you only see in EP 12. It's noticeable that's she's avoiding his feelings and pushing him into the friendzone from the beginning. Again not because she doesnt like him, but because she's not ready and has other issues that take priority.
No spoilers. At the beginning Delilah took out a pocket watch that showed the celestial alignment and it wasn’t aligned yet. So they did the ritual early.
Fun fact, in their game Delilah actually hit Vex with a spell called finger of death. If it knocks you down to zero, you die instantly and get raised as a zombie. It brought Vex down to ONE hit point. Then she hit Vex and dropped her to zero and they couldn't heal her because of the anti magic field in that room. She got SO close to dying!
She didn't even hit have to hit Vex, the anti-magic cancelled the flying effect that was on her and she dropped 40 feet onto the stone. So you could say she was actually in danger of dying from mundane injuries 😅 and everyone was so panicked about magic not working they didn't think to stabilise her with a medicine check. It was just luck of the dice that Vex succeeded on her death saves and brought herself back
I believe during the campaign that this episode is based upon, Ashley Johnson, the voice actor playing Pike, had some issues with her Skype connection, froze, and got disconnected.
Did she get disconnected multiple times? For some reason I’m remembering her having to drop shortly before they met/released Ripley, and then having to come back later?
Yep they got Vex out of the room but were still in range of the orb. Were just starting to head down the stairs when SkyPike dropped out, so Matt narrated that as a delayed effect of the anti-magic ball 😅 since he wasn't going to say "Oh Ashley you're available to play tonight? Sorry this evil marble broke the connection you can't play." Pike came back online by the time they got to the acid room, and helped out in the next event.
I mean, at least until your cleric gets lvl 3 slots, or lvl 5 slots if things go REALLY wrong. with lvl 7 slots rolling a new character is optional. beyond that only party wipes. the only time they permanently lost a character in the show and it wasn't intentional was because of some bad decisions and a freaky combination of events. curiously Matt actually hates ressurection because it completely take away any stakes, I mean, why care about a important character dying when you have resurrection ? you need to fuck up with their very soul to make sure they don't come back.
@@danilooliveira6580 my DnD group is playing in a world where diamonds are scare. So I have level 3 spells but no diamonds. Thoughts and prayers for my party 😂
@Emmanuel Araujo Not in this fight (in fact he starts the fight beating the shit out of Cassandra). But in many fights he would get stunned, charmed, couldn't reach the enemy etc. and it became a meme that Grog was always out of the fight. Also in episode 1 Grog is the first one down in the fight against Brimscythe and Scanlan says "Grog's down already? Come on!" It's mostly just an easter egg.
@Emmanuel Araujo It's a bit of a shortcut animators do when they struggle with balancing a group of fighters. Normally a tank hits harder than anyone else. If they cannot creatively let the powerhouse fight without overshadowing other combatants, the bench them to either a 1v1 square off that nobody else deals with or take them out early. You can see this with Superman early Justice League or Superboy in Young Justice. In a situation of the Briarwoods, the most optimal/minmax way to fight Sylas is to let Grog engage him and both Keyleth and Pike just pepper him from the distance. That isn't as interesting as a Pike/Sylas 1v1. So I definitely understand how attractive it is to bench Grog for a hot minute.
@Emmanuel Araujo So yeah it's like an inoffensive trope that would be super nice if they don't rely on. It may take more time to choreograph 1 more player, but its worth it imo
The spells that Delilah and Scanlan used on each other was the Silence spell. Vex getting a arrow through the magic barrier was because Laura rolled a Nat 20.
Glad to be here for it. I know Cassandra seemed shadier in the animated series, but in the live action show it was weeks before she betrayed them. I also suggest going to watch the Scanbo live play episode. It was far different than the animated version. And it was truly epic on improv combat of Scanlan vs House Vedmire
In the live show they found her in the castle, it was just a few hours later she led them into the acid trap. They were all quite suspicious of her, but had no magical ways of being certain.
@@aceofspade2120 They checked her room and found it empty, Anders was holding her hostage in his study as part of a trap, that was still the same. The freeing of Whitestone was very quick, 5 days from VM entering the city to defeating the Briarwoods, then it was 2 weeks until the solstice/Winterscrest.
They were too early so the ritual didn't work. Vox Machina's arrival forced them to speed up their plans, but it wasnt something that could be sped up. They had to do it on the solstice like they pointed out in an earlier episode.
I love that you called out Grog 'doing some Goku shit'. Travis (Grog) in college watching DBZ with buddies wanted to get involved in Voice Acting. He had met (briefly dated) Laura Bailey (Vex) and saw that she was involved. She voiced Kid Trunks. So my theory is that scene is tribute to what initially drove him to Voice Acting in the first place.
Explanation as to why Grog got bodied during the beginning fight and was out was because of magic. Barbarians when raging have resistances to bludgeoning (fall from heights, mace to the face), piercing (spears, swords, arrows, sharp traps) and slashing type weapons and damage. He takes regular or normal damage from all magic attacks and spells cast on him bc he has no resistances or nothing to aid him against the magic arts. There is a subclass that gives you resistances towards all but one type of damage. On another note, grogs damn near unkillable with how much HP he has. certain battle royale yall should react/watch, It's my favorite one bit of caution bc it does have a certain character in it, that has not made an appearance yet.
You mentioned "That's some goku shit." Funny enough Vex's VA Laura Bailey, is also the English VA for Kid trunks from DBZ. She met her husband Travis Willingham, the voice of Grog, after he was pestering her repeatedly to get him a role in DBZ. there is a video on RU-vid of them going over the story for a fan at a con during a Q+A very cute very funny.
This is one of those stories where you can't really pick just one favourite. It was the same in the original campaign. That shit was 400 hours of going 'Keyleth's my favourite. No wait, Percy is my favourite. But actually, Pike is my favourite. No Vex. No Keyleth. No Grog.' And that just the whole way through.
I know alot people are misunderstanding Vex. When you more of her back story. You understand why she the way she is. She a relatable character for me. For most part what we are seeing is a facade. Her past has affected her far more then her brother. Check out kith and kin. It a novel about their youth
Tbh i think people overstate her rudeness a lot. Campaign aside, even just in this first season she warmed up to Keyleth pretty quickly, it was somewhat personal for *maybe* 1 episode then it started being solely about Vax's behavior towards Vex (with barely any actual animosity towards Keyleth). For some reason people don't pick up on how - on most occasions - she's actually been shown to be supportive of her, or on how many moments there have been that clearly showed she cares about Scanlan for instance. As you said, knowing her backstory helps make sense of a lot of the things she defaults to but even with those coping mechanism she literally isn't as self-absorbed as she's made out to be
I wonder if it might be easier for you to get Vex and Vax right if you learn the long form of their names, Vexahlia and Vax’ildan, bc imo they sound more feminine and masculine (pronunciation: vex-ALL-ee-uh & VAX-il-dan)
I spent 3 minutes trying to figure out if I had cracked my screen or something in the middle top....then I realised it's their mic cut off by the camera. Things that make you feel stupid
I have watched you guys react to invincible, peacemaker, and now Vox machina I just subscribed today sorry I'm late to the party but I am here you guys are great I hope to see more.
you got a rich woman in heels running up a pyramid and you telling none of these harden adventurers could run up and get her before she closed the huge ass door behind her? oof ... you guys saw her running up and she was at most 30 feet head start comon man hussle!
I don't know what being rich has to do with it but yeah, they should have kept the logic of the original and have her just teleport right to the door. She was hopping all over the place in their first animated ancounter and apparently she's just forgotten how to do that spell :p
the story is a little predictable, the characters are a little pretentious, and the last story has run like 3 episodes too long, we still have no clear leader tho vox seems to be goto guy, but the team dinamics are well planned and the animation is very good altho it relies heavily on gore still is works, i would keep watching this, unlike that garbage series kings ranking that is just godawful
considering that the show is based off of a dnd game where the consequences are largely based off of how well (or poorly) the dice get rolled, i wouldn’t rely too much on predictability.
