In the streaming series, fighting Sylas was difficult. Vampires in D&D regenerate quickly unless they are hit by certain kinds of damage or exposed to sunlight. So Keyleth's player held onto her most powerful spell at the time called Sunbeam which sends out a beam of energy in a straight line and inflicts just the kind of damage they needed to take out vampires. Deliah's anguish at that moment when Matt the DM screamed, as Deliah, 'I broke the world for you!' was a deep moment that gave everyone pause.
8:15 This is a combo of two of Grog's class abilities. As a Berserker, he can't be charmed or frightened whilst raging, and as a Barbarian, he can use what're called Reckless Attacks, where he can attack with advantage at the cost of leaving himself open.
at this point he actually didn't have access to the Mindless Rage. That's a higher level ability. Unless I'm mistaken. EDIT: Oh shit, never mind! lvl 6
@@zippomage yeah the reason he was able to be charmed earlier in the show was actually because both Matt and Travis forgot about Mindless Rage. Matt brings it up at this moment as a "you know this feeling and the rage helps you shake it off" but then out of character was like, "moving forward we will try to remember that when you are raging you can't be charmed"
Since you mentioned Trinket not being there, Trinket was there in the game. And when the party went below the castle to confront the Briarwoods, Scanlan cast Seeming to make the party look like Percys and Cassandras while keeping their actual size, so Trinket looked like a large Percy. At the ziggurat, Percy shot at Delilah then hid and when when Delilah turned around to look at him, she just saw the abnormally large Percy aka Trinket and was momentarily confused
He was also left to guard Ripley, but she slipped out and dropped some kind of smoke bomb to befuddle his keen tracking senses. But he did try his very bear best!! 🐻
I think they're playing that as Orthax's influence rocking Percy's mental stability boat. He wasn't allowed to go after Dr Ripley, so he shifted full attention to the biggest pieces on the board.
Oh, good call! In Scanbo, Sam also referred to burning down "Venkman's" house. I recognized "Must go faster," from Jurassic Park, and the scene with Cassandra and Keyleth screaming at each other from "The Mummy". Love all the sly pop culture references, just like they do in-game!
At 11:52, without giving any spoilers, there's something funky happening at this temple. In the real life stream, Ashley was still filming episodes of blindside, so she came in on a laptop camera. About halfway through the fight, they temporarily lost connection and everyone's like, "THEY DISPELLED ASHLEY. NOOOOOO!" SO MUCH FUN, to see even that little moment brought back here.
"I broke the world for us" That was & still is one of my many favourite quotes from Campaign 1, because we all have someone we would break the world for.
They gave Pike the budget this episode. I know im spoiled because anime goes so fucking hard usually but I hope we're able to get western animation to that level. Also they gotta come up with better ways to get Grog something to do. It's like every fight he needs to be out cold, or he'll just over power everything.
"The problem with Grog is: he hits things and they die. The fights over". I feel like that could have been mitigated a bit by giving him a slighter smaller than ginormous sized axe 😆 Maybe with the sword now, his fighting style might shift into something that drawns out more hits
@@luigigreene2548 Well remember the swords ability to take in blood and grow bigger? Can't make much use of that feature if the opponent is immediately dead
@@hhylobates4098 I am trying to determine if you are a critter/someone familiar with the rest of campaign 1 or if your introduction to Critical Role has been solely through "The Legend of Vox Machina" (not gate keeping by any means, but don't want to spoil anything). There are ways of considering how to perceive your comment and offer an appropriate, spoiler free reply. If you are familiar with campaign 1, than it is possible there is sarcasm layered into your comment due to knowledge and appreciation of details to come later in the series. In which case, I find the comment enjoyable/hilarious. If your comment comes solely from appreciation of the animated series thus far, we can leave it at the following: Grogs fighting style is likely to change a bit depending on how close to the source material they stay in season 2+. Of course understanding there are many, many hours of content to adapt and condense.
@@luigigreene2548 Oh I'm a certified critter 😆 not really being sarcastic but I am only up to ep 46 in C1 so maybe I don't have all the info. I just mean that a great big axe is not really made for fighting, its for chopping, you get hit once and its over. They did a really good job animating the combat choreography in the two Grog vs Sylas encounters, but you can see Sylas mostly just dodges untouched, Grog isn't "allowed" to hit things until its time to end the fight. So three times he was benched from combat for a while until it was time for him to come in, they can only do that so many times so his fighting style will need to change. A weapon that benefits from the time being taken to get in multiple hits facilities that. He can still brutally one-shot chump goons, /after/ he charges up his new Edgy friend. Of course there's also the fact enemies they face should be able to take more hits as time goes on
