@@samholmessailing I get severe motion sickness, even when I am driving. So I really love watching you on the high seas, having an awesome time, Sam! I live through you, Sam!
Pad eyes for the jack lines - it looked like you used SS wood screws to mount them in place. I hope you will through bolt them so they don't pull out should they be tested with you going overboard one day. Enjoying see you put this boat in shape!! Cheers.
Times 2. Those jack line pad eyes need to be thru bolted. Your life may depend on it. I know a lot of cruisers don't even have jack lines. I did and here's my take. Imagine getting thrown off the deck at 3 AM on a stormy night. The jack line and the life line need to stop you before you go over the railing, in other words you're still on the deck. Imagine there's excess line and you're hanging off the side of your boat while the boat is still underway in very stormy seas. Do you think you could pull yourself back on deck. As a test with your boat at anchor in calm seas jump over the side with your jack and life line and see how difficult it is to pull yourself up and over the rail. OK. Rant over. Great videos! Keep posting!
bruce warren & D H. I agree with both of you. If there is a reason to do it in the first place. There is a reason to do it right. Halfway safe is still unsafe. The illusion of safety is just that, an illusion. That said he is a competent sailor and he is young with limited finances. I applaud him for getting out there and realizing his dream. We all choose what risks are acceptable to each of us. I know we all just want him to live a long and healthy life. So we comment out of concern. Cheers.
Don’t you just love all the armchair comments. I get it! You’ve probably been to sea a lot longer then anyone commenting. I get it. Do what you can now and get back to it when you have the proper bolts. Some people just can’t avoid commenting on the obvious.🤣🤣🤣
Sam!!! I just figured out why you had to get the new boat! You ran out of stuff to fix, modify, destroy and rebuild on the old one and you needed to start again . Yet I find myself looking for your new videos all the time, hahahahah :))))
awesome stuff Sam! i look forward to every post on IG and youtube. i follow about 15 sailing projects, and you are one of my favorites, especially as a solo sailor. i have recently fallen in love with the idea of sailing. i figure, if i watch enough of your informative, learn-as-you-go, passionate, in-the-moment vlogs, by the time i'm ready to invest my time and money into the adventure, perhaps I'll be decently knowledgeable on the subject. keep up the hard work!
I've got one that's been going strong for about a year now. They are PWM based, so you lose a bit of efficiency, but if you have extra room, the price for a MPPT controller can go towards another panel which makes up for the energy loss by a large margin.
New fridge install looks good, plus you can use the top (when closed) as a dish drying station. Also, I see the subs are growing. Congrats, 100k is right around the corner...
Hey Sam, I looked on the Cape Dory Sailing Association web site for recommendations on how to install jack line anchors. On my Cape Dory I use 1/2” nylon or Dacron braid line rigged to 3/8” forged pad eyes (less expensive welded pad eyes can fail under extreme loads) thru bolted with 4 - 1/4” bolts with 3/4” 4”x6” teak backing with large flange washers and lock nuts. Don’t use 2 hole. Get 4 hole pad eyes. 1/4” plate aluminum or ss steel would be better. Other boats I sail on I bring my lines and tie to their cleats fore and aft. Stop short around a lifeline stantion going aft so you don’t go behind the boat and get dragged drowning. I use a short tether working tight which has saved me a few times in rough weather from falling overboard. Some sailors like one amidships which will do this well. I have also tried this and works well too. Read Fastnet Force 10 as some sailors were lost at sea as their pad eyes failed. Rig well as your life depends on them.
Sam, have you considered making a "mast gate" I think this would be a really good advantage with your setup, allowing your sails to fall fully down to the boom and back up again without needing to to forward. These are traditionally drilled and tapped in place, but you can modify and mill slots on the edges so you only have to loosen the screws and slide the gate out of the way. Let me know what you think.
Sam, if you put more holes in your boat, you might want to go to Sub School and get your Dolphins. But seriously, your mast light is a four way switch I think. If you had it on one position while at the top of your mast, did you check and see when using the switch below if it worked correctly afterward from the cockpit?
Dude! I also have a similar kind of rope setup, preventing the slides from dropping out.. works like a charm. pro tip: use a bungee rope, makes reefing easier 😂
I went for an improved version of « the piece of rope » by replacing it with « a piece of bungee cord » 3 turns tight around the mast and you can slide it when you want that sail off even partially (to reef for example). :) it’s been on my mast for the last three, four maybe, seasons... very happy with it.
Pad eyes for jack lines held with wood screws may pull out under shock load. Also, the wood may rot since I didn't see any sealant around the screws. I also suggest bolts with a backing plate....
Hello! I was looking to go and send you some money as a donation! With everything going on I’m trying to do my part and share! But I could not seem to find the PayPal link!! Will keep looking! But thank you for the videos and if I find it I will be sending some your way!
Make a a couple of stops and get some proper screws for it, has to be way cheaper than $25 ea and it will be god to have spares on hand. Watching you put the fridge in I found myself wondering about where the warm air outlet is on the fridge. You ought to replace those screws with bolts & a backing plate, might make you worst day ever a cheap thrills day rather than the last one.
The area where the sink is, is normally an empty cavity area to store pots and and pans. They just put a new top in and cut a hole for the sink and trash.
Love watching your videos. Was wondering why you put in such a large Victron energy charge controller? The one you have is 50 amps and seems a bit large. I have 600 watts on my RV and us a 30 amp controller. How many watts do you have? I've done a lot of solar installs....cheers
The proper thing for a critical lifesaving component like this would be to through bolt it but i just used sheet metal screws. I made sure to put them in a place where they could be through bolted later but this is probably good enough for me.
Scusa.. Solo per pura curiosità, posso chiederti che lavoro fai? No perché hai molto tempo da poter dedicare alla barca.. Ed io non ci riesco mai!! Comunque complimenti per i tuoi video! Ti seguo sempre. Ciao.
I love the way you make "grilled" cheese toast in a frying pan! That takes initiative which your videos indicate you are not short of! Most Americans would just buy a bigger boat if they wanted a fridge accessible! Did you check before you cut the hole, that the fridge would even fit without having to carve a hole in the hull.
You would be amazed at how many new boat owners are not capable of most of your efforts. I have a feeling that some start projects but give up when the result will not be perfect! Older boats are cheap because new ones that need - hopefully less upgraded - are not unaffordable.
Sam you seemed to know what you are doing. If you ever want something different let me know. I could sure use someone that is as handy as you are. Otherwise be safe my friend.
