For cryin' out loud!! This video is fantastic! Excellent instructions, explanations, and visuals. You raised the bar so high that no one can get anywhere near it. Thank you, Karina!
Oh my gosh Karina, what a fabulous video! I am going to go through it again and make ALL THE NOTES! I always learn something when I watch your videos, but this was chock full! Thank you for being such a wonderful teacher!
This video is the best explanation on necklines, binding etc. I use your method and successfully sewed my 1st neckband! I'm so thrilled. Love your videos. You are so knowledgeable. keep up the good work. So glad I found your channel.
Now I understand why my neckband was too small. I measured at the edge. Thank you!! I just made a muslin for a knit top that I drafted from a RTW top. I added a neckband but didn't like the look. I just ended up turning the whole thing to the inside and top stitched it down. I think doing the double fold binding will give me the look I want. Perfect timing for this Master Class! I'm saving this video to my library for future reference. I'm certain I will be watching it often as I am just getting started with knits. Thank you for your thorough explanations and examples with actual garments. Karina, no one else puts out such excellent content. You really teach us rather than just show. I can't tell you how much my sewing has improved with your guidance. ❤️
Limitless sewing options! Hurray for Karina! I love to sew with knits of all types & this video has just raised my game. So many hints and tips that are really useful and gives us confidence to adapt techniques and finishes to make our project unique. So generous of you to take such time and trouble to make high quality videos & showcase your high quality garments ❤❤❤
Thank you so much for this video. It’s been so helpful for me. I love the percentages. I guesstimate the length of my bindings which doesn’t always give me the result I’m hoping for. All your videos are so helpful but this one I really needed.
I guesstimate many things in my sewing but bands and binding I prefer to be more exact about and it saves some seam ripping time :) I’m glad this helps.
This is so useful & helpful, especially the tip on hand basting the bindings & using a 1/4” foot, it will save me so much time seam ripping. I’m calling hand basting my new sewing super power lol. I’ve always thought it took too much time but it actually saves time redoing things.
Amazingly detailed video. Learned so much! I wondered if you would consider doing a video on different types of hems in the future? Thanks for sharing all your sewing knowledge. ♥♥♥
And a master class it was, simply amazing Karina. I absolutely adore your videos, your clear and precise instruction, and all the different options you provide for us poor beginner + medium + advanced sewists. You have something for all of us and I always learn something new and then incorporate it into my next sewing pattern. I saved this video and many others from your classes and will get back to them again and again. You make sewing simple but fun, and I just love how precise you are and going the extra mile to hand bast your necklines and armholes. My Mama taught me the same way and I still implement it today.
I learned so much from this video, it's amazing. I really like how you have come up with your own techniques for sewing and I am using them all. The measuring around the neck and armholes at the seam allowance instead of the edge is going to make my life so much easier. I will be referring to this video several times I think to make sure I am doing things correctly. Thank you so much!
Thank you so much Karina for so many useful tips and the true knowledge about sewing. One thing I don't get, though, is why sometimes you sew the necklines with zigzag stitches, but sometimes straight? Is that something to do with the size of the neck hole?
I sew neckbands with zig zag stitch and binding with straight stitch. Not due to the size of the neck hole. The neckbands have only one seam. The binding have two and that reinforces the straight stitching (they won’t pop and they look neater).
Thank you for sharing these techniques. The mystery behind determining the perfect length neckband for fabrics with varying degree of stretch has now been clarified for me. You are doing a wonderful job. I am now more confident sewing with knits and no longer feel they are out of my league.
Thanks Karina! I'm feeling very prepared for making some knits tops. I appreciate your time pulling this together. My confidence for doing nice necklines was holding me back.
I thought of you today when I was unpicking a too short neckband. I should have followed your advice and measured the pattern pieces instead of blithely following the pattern! 😂 I have learned my lesson!
Thank you so much, this was just what I needed. I am about to tackle finishing a cycle jersey where I am changing it to sleeveless, I was dreading working out how to edge the arm holes. This was so well explained!
This will be my go-to reference from now on as I had gone with 80% or followed pattern recently and had not great results. You have clarified why variations in % I had also been measuring the edge and wondered why my calculation varied from pattern too. all this excellent content for free.
Thank you another great video full of useful information. You explain it so well ,it shows that you enjoy what you do. Hope you and family are still keeping safe .
I'm so glad I found your channel! I love when you show us how to do a particular treatment to a project! So so (sew) helpful. Thank you for teaching this old dog new tricks 😊
Fantastic thank you i know i will be using this for reference. After watching your contiousous bias binding video i am obsessed. I now have so much bias binding, it looks lovely on wooden cotton reels :-)
Thanks so much Karina, I watched this over and over again and am exciting now to do my first successful neck and armhole binding. I would love to see a tutorial on a V-neck binding as well. They can be very tricky. Please consider doing one if you have not already.
Thank you for showing all these options in one video. I have struggled with so many bindings/bands and this video just put it into a perfect sequence for my brain to hold onto. It is wonderful to find someone who teaches the same way I learn. Thanks again!!
Love your videos! Very helpful and loaded with great ideas. I plan on coming back to this video. I am wrapping up the Mirri dress and enjoyed your video for that make. Those neckline corners were getting me. I appreciated knowing I was doing it right ha lol…
Thank you Karina, i always learn so much from you. Yestterday I made the Willow wrap dress and followed your advice on the neck bining and lining the back bodice, it's my best make yet, all thanks to you. I make 'neck' bands for my knickers using the % calculations you mention and they are always super comfortable, much better than adding elastic and it uses more scraps.always a good thing in my book.
Thank you for such a helpful vlog, Karina! This will be a great reference for future sewing - it's just too easy to forget any of the important details so important for a good result. Thanks again!
When you sewed the neckline on the black and white dress, you serged the edge with three threads to finish it. Is there any reason why I shouldn’t do 4? Just trying to not have to change serger settings. Would it add unnecessary bulk? This is an incredible video. So much great info!
Hello Karina, this will definitely be my standard reference video. I never see you using store bought bands (decorative elastic or others) to finish necklines and armholes. Is there a reason? I would love to have a good tutorial for those to.
If I don’t show that, it’s because I prefer these methods with fabrics that feel soft on the skin. Elastics irritate me directly on my skin. So I don’t use them because I don’t like them. I also don’t like decorating edges. I’m sure you can find tutorials on those methods from other channels:)
A knit pattern will rarely, if ever use that seam allowance but if it does, I would use 3/8” and not stress about it. If I’m creating my own bands and bindings, there’s a lot of freedom to be had.
Thank you for this! I'm using my serger to attach the neckband. The pattern didn't take this into consideration so the neckband width was too small for any to be trimmed away. I noticed and stopped before I was too far in, unpicked, made a wider band and started again. Second attempt, I more successful, but the cut is a little deep for my liking. I will try again and add extra seem allowance when using the serger.
Hello Karina! I love all your tutorials, thanks for sharing it with great charisma. Do you have videos in other languages than English? I have a lot of Spanish friends who would love to see you.have a great day 😀
Sorry, I don´t plan to ever make videos in spanish or portuguese. It would not make sense on this channel and I am not going to make a new channel. I am pressed for time as it is right now.
Oh my - one of the hardest sews for me is top stitching the neck band - I don't think it ever looks right. Now you tell me you don't do it - I feel like I am free!!! I will no longer do it either, trhank you. Do you top stitch your arm and hem binding?
Thank you! One place for all the neckline and armhole information! Also adding no the text on the screen is helpful so I can scroll to the exact part! Excellent!
What a wonderful video! Thank you so much. I’m going to watch it again and take notes. I am so happy to hear someone say that they don’t like top stitching. I hate it and I’m not good at it either. So thank you for that.
The % is just the amount that the band or binding will be smaller than what the neckline or armhole measures so that it brings it in close to the body. Thank you so much for watching.
Thank you for explaining the difference between lengths being dependant on the seam allowance. This is not something I’ve ever considered, and will definitely enable me to finesse my garments. What you share is always so useful and this video I’m sure will solve the problem of having an average finish for a lot of people. Thank you for sharing your vast knowledge. ❤️
I’m making a Forte, view C. I blindly trusted the neckband that cam pe with it. It gapes. Then in measuring, it measured incorrectly. I serged it on, so I guess I have to carefully rip it off and cut one according to the method in this video. I wish I had photographic memory.
