Crash course in cross-kicking: 3:35
Applying the technique to Solfeggietto: 5:00
Hey kids! Its your good buddy Uncle Ben, here with another magical installment of Weekend Wankshop!
On episode 243, i'm going to give you all a complete lesson on how to improve and master crosspicking, which is going to take your guitar playing to the next level!
Crosspicking is a technique used by Steve Morse, Andy Wood, John Petrucci, and a legion of evil bluegrass masters like Tony Rice. This technique allows you to change strings in any direction after any pick stroke. This method allows your picking hand to be completely metronomic and rhythmically precise while navigating even the trickiest licks or arpeggios. There's a lot you can do with this versatile picking technique!
At 3:35 i'll give you all a quick crash course on everything you need to know about crosspicking, then i will show you all how to apply it to a section of Solfeggietto by CPE Bach! I always find the best way to practice a new technique is in the context of a song or etude, not just boring exercises! This segment of the piece really helped me get a grip on the cross picking technique, plus its got that cool neoclassical sound. I'll be putting up the backing track i made at two different speeds on my Patreon, so be sure to get it! Theres a LOT more to this piece than what i'm showing here, too, so check it out!
Playing my Suhr Modern Satin into the Fractal Axe FX III, which is just amazing.
What do you want to see on future installments of Weekend Wankshop? Just let me know!!!

I've impressed myself greatly this year by going from drosspicking to crosspicking just by writing riffs n stuff and playing them a lot. Then I tackle this and realise I've been largely playing things that fit what my hands want to do naturally. I've been forced to put myself back into the drosspicking box until I can do this, up to speed, without sounding like someone who can't really do it. Thanks for the reality check UB!

9:00 (setting up for the stretch to 7th fret) this feels more natural to me: D = 2nd finger 3rd fret B string; *B = 3rd finger 4th fret G string* D = 1st finger 3rd fret B string.

Thanks to the Troy Grady stuff I realised that I've been a cross picker for years...who knew? Troy Grady that's who! Uncle Ben, I feel you've missed a key part out in your explanation which is the bounce. Looking at Troy's explanation a key part of the movement is a bounce which helps to bring the pick to the strings and then clear them. It's a sort of 50/50 between bouncing and rotating. I realised that I was a flat picking cross picker so my "bounce" was really emphasised. That was what had been slowing me down all these years. So I've changed to edge picking with a little bit of a downward pick slant. This is allowing me to massively reduce the "bounce" part of the movement and therefore play faster and more efficiently. Love this lick. I'll definitely be adding it to my vocabulary! Thanks as always Uncle Ben!

Thanks for all your help Ben, you're real cool dude. I saw Steve Vai talk about voicing a melody that he wanted smooth and consistent but to get it right he had to basically scoot a finger up the neck while playing a note - hold it with the snuck finger while he used the freed finger to take care of business on up the neck - I tried replacing the roll on the 7th with a similar idea, sneaking the first finger in on the 7th high E to set myself for hitting the 9. That feel good/bad to anyone else?

Personally I think adding the open high E string in the F#7 arpeggio makes it more complicated rather than just fretting the note on the B string, but that's just me. I was trying to figure out why I was having such a problem with that section and that small change seemed to be enough to help me work through it. Sweet little lesson there, Unc! Uncle Ben, Ole Nephew Kenny here, Im' sorry to hear your story of a young love rejected , but I too have felt the sting of a young incorrect picking technique ax slinging witty, charming young man, having the doorway to love slammed in my face. But the truth is piano instructors, [ usually part time librarians] teach their female students, from a very young age , how to spot bad guitar picking technique from a mile away. No future with that guy,, probably will be playing 'Freebird', down at the Side Pocket Lounge for life. But look what you've done, and be proud my friend, you have corrected your bad picking, became an international guitar teacher, and picked up minions of followers, and probably will win a Senate Seat. Ain't nothin' gonna break-a my stride! Nobody gonna slow me down! Oh No! I got to keep on movin'! I have a lot of luck with cross picking, but I don't think it was deliberate. I found sweeping so difficult early on and loved Steve Morse and John Petrucci so much, I just gravitated towards picking. But it always needs practice and this is killer. And we all know tons of guys who can sweep like a mofo, but then they see someone like Morse crosspick some crazy shit...Tumeni Notes, anyone?...and they always lose their mind! "How does he do that?" So even though it has a speed limitation, it is a VERY highly regarded skill to possess and is worth pursuing! Nice work, Uncle Ben! And Glad you didn't snag the girl. I think we can all agree, Kate's better. 🙌🏻

I'm playing this on my guitar in D, so I had to find a way for the part at 9:29 and I did: I play the first note (3 on B string, which is 5 on B string for me) with my middle finger and then instead of the open string that note with the ring finger on the G string (4 in E-tuning, 6 in my tuning) and then I play the 3 on B (5 on B) with my index finger. It's not too hard to do actually and from there you can go on as before. If you are cool you can then also instead of rolling down your pinky to the 7 (9) on E just jump there with your index finger. It's a bit hard to bring to speed though. Yet another option is to just play those first three notes with middle, ring, middle finger and then quickly shift to play the 7 on B with your middle finger as well. Again it's not super easy to bring to speed, but it's actually quite comfortable to the left hand IMO. You also have the choice to then roll down the middle finger, or just use the index finger, which is also quite comfy.

@BenEller
@BenEller 5 лет назад
Tom4349 I can see what you mean, and I know a lot of people that think of minor songs as being in their relative major key. Tomato tomahto! F#m7 would be in-key diatonically, yes. But any V-I cadence is improved when you make the V a dominant chord. This is used aaaaaall the time in classical music in the form of Major V-I’s (F#7 to BM) and minor v-i’s (F#7-Bm).

I don't think Ben's explanation of crosspicking is entirely correct. What he describes is two-way pickslaning after every note, but I don't believe that this is actually what he is doing. What he does is clearing the string after an upstroke because of his downward pickslant (as he describes) but then clearing the string on the downstroke because of the wrist extension (so basically half a stringhop). All without changing the direction of the pickslant.
@curtisreid9100
@curtisreid9100 3 года назад
MASTER Crosspicking. The technique he is describing is a simple alternate picking ala Mr. Morse. This would be better referred to as efficiency technique (which is what I strive to teach all of my students) Whilst every teacher of guitar technique has a different idea of cross picking this video does not explain what cross picking is. I do like the physics of picking mechanics / technique taught here but that is not what cross picking is. That is simply physics. The term cross picking is based on a sixteenth note rhythm (or beyond) so if the SOLFEGGIETTO music is written in 16ths then this is indeed cross picking. It has nothing to do with crossing strings or physical technique. It has to do with playing an opposite stroke on what would normally be a down or an up stroke. Sixteenth notes are the first real rhythmic cross picking pattern for plectrum studies as the grouping of notes is a natural inherit crossed pick motion i.e; the second down stroke is played down where it would normally be an up. You can cross pick on eighth notes but there is no natural musical reason why. The player is just playing all down strokes just because (usually a good rock tone!) There is a different school of thought on cross picking and that would be the Stanley Brothers / early bluegrass style which really is a morph on pick direction for ease and I generally don't teach this. More like sweep technique. In bluegrass! Just my 2 cents from 35+ years of teaching music privately.

@97stratocaster21
@97stratocaster21 5 лет назад
I wish I could give you an answer that makes sense. I'm aware of how efficient economy picking is, but I'm much more comfortable with alternate picking. It feels much more natural to me, most likely because I have a couple decades put into alternate picking.
@thegrinchinamaskholdingagu968
@thegrinchinamaskholdingagu968 5 лет назад
Thanks. I actually feel the exact opposite way. It feels weird trying to remember if I should upstroke or downstroke based on whatever is next in the pattern. I find it way easier to think to the next string I'm travelling to, and base my up or down off that.
@autobotsNdecepticons
@autobotsNdecepticons 5 лет назад
Assuming you mean by economy picking that you alternate up and down strokes until switching strings, then maintain the same direction stroke for each string cross... I've found it's easier to maintain a consistent rhythm using alternate picking because your pace never changes. If you do two ups or two downs in a row, suddenly you're interrupting your constant rhythm and you have to change the way you're keeping time and striking the string vs earlier. It's basically mixing sweep technique with alternate picking technique instead of just using one or the other. I never found it felt natural to do that all the time, though it can help sometimes. Whatever the case, three different guitarists could play the same thing three different ways and sound equally good, so there's no single right approach.
@thegrinchinamaskholdingagu968
@thegrinchinamaskholdingagu968 5 лет назад
@@autobotsNdecepticons That's what I mean. You worded it very well, and I'll have to consider the consitamt rythm thing a lot more. Thanks!
@fromthistexasbreath
@fromthistexasbreath 5 лет назад
Tonally I think economy picking sounds smoother, and alternate picking has more attack. I'm more of an economy picker, but sometimes I just want a section to sound more aggressive, and I find that alternate picking gets me there. Although most of us tend to fall into either camp, it's always good to be proficient enough in both to use them as aesthetic choices too.
