Molly Tuttle's right hand technique is a melding of several uniquely virtuosic picking approaches: the forearm anchor of her rhythm comping, and the palm anchor she uses for crosspicked lead lines. "White Freightliner Blues" is a showcase for her ability to switch effortlessly between these modes, even while singing. In this clip from her Masters in Mechanics interview, she gives us a closeup look at how the switch happens. The full interview includes tablature for Freightliner along with 41 other slow motion examples that offer an in-depth look at Molly's astonishing flat pick fluency. Watch it here! troygrady.com/interviews/molly...

Molly Tuttle defines another level in Bluegrass. In 2017 she won guitar player of the year from the International Bluegrass Music Association. The IBMA has been around since 1985. Molly was the first woman to win that award. For an encore, she won it again in 2018. Molly Tuttle is 29 years old as of Jan. 2022.

During the interview, she discloses the secret of becoming a great player. Practice everything slow and steady until muscle memory takes over and it becomes natural. Being a frustrated mediocre player, I know just how difficult that can be. All I ever want to do is see how fast I can play a lick or run, and I never ever get it right. Molly is a truly great player with amazing command over her guitar. You can tell that she has spent countless hours honing her skills. She paid her dues and is reaping the rewards! BTW, have you ever seen her play the banjo? Incredible! She has it all!

@wellesradio
@wellesradio 4 года назад
There’s a good book I read years ago called “Zen Guitar” which talks about taking a meditative approach to guitar. The author says you should always work on improving quickness not speed. It’s a philosophy he suggests for every effort in life, and I have embraced it fully. Quickness is exactly as you describe it, a rapidly increasing perfection. Getting to that finish line balancing an egg on a spoon over and over until you’ve improved your pace, working on improving every step of the process, not just running at breakneck speed. It requires patience and diligence and the results are amazing. Improve your quickness, not your speed. Little by little shortening the distance between brain and hand, improving dexterity, reaction and response time.

Molly is of course amazing. In the interview she explains that she was doing this in her early teens so it didn’t take her decades. When you film players up close you can see that there’s a difference in the actual hand motions used, and this explains why some players can play lines others can’t. The good news is we can learn the motions Molly uses, once were more aware of what they are.

This is what happens when you practice to the point of instinct taking over. A heart and dedication no shredding can emulate. Because literally anybody can shred, if they run up and down scales with a metronome long enough. But this right here takes more than practice and technicality, its playing straight from the heart.

Some of the best flat pickin I've ever seen or heard and a lovely voice as well. Bluegrass can be some real hot rodded music. Better than any. A real show stopper. I remember the first time I saw Vince Gill. As a matter of fact maybe......naw that would be too good.

She didn't. Listen to the interview after her performance. Normal people don't speak like that. Now turn down the playback speed to 75%. Much better, no?

@@theopeterbroers819 Ahh. Someone is jealous. I've seen sped up guitar and this isnt it. Her voice sounds fine to me but I'm not a salty ol man so my ears work.

@@theopeterbroers819 it's not sped up... The whole video explains how she gets to this accuracy and speed. She's played her whole life. Lifelong learning gets you to this level not camera tricks.

Just wonderful! Troy Grady understands so much. When a guitarist has the Magnet camera holder that will one day will make him an uber inventor, they are players I know to watch. Thank you to Molly and Troy, peace
