Hi Dean. Justin has been my friend for over 25 years from when i had stores. You and Corey really help him out with the visits. He is truly appreciative. Absolutely the best people. Thanks for helping my friends.
When I first started keeping fish, boy close to forty years ago, most aquarium stores were like this. How I miss them. Thanks for the trip down memory lane.
Yes, my local LFS looked like this. I think it was about 35 years ago when I got my first fish when I was about 8 years old. I think I brought it home on my BMX 🤣
This was the one and only aquarium store I visited on my visit to the west coast (I live in the netherlands) and I loved it! The owner was great and After I told him I could not buy anything he still showed me around and was a great host. Loved it!
Good on ya for bringing up the courteousness of wearing masks. I love close-ish to this store (across a bridge or two) and keep wanting to make the trip. I think I actually missed you by a couple of hours at the Academy of Sciences a couple of weeks ago!
Idk if ppl know this but being vaccinated does not mean u can’t catch or spread Covid. It helps u stay symptom free n helps u fight the sickness. But on to a lighter note great video. Those planted tanks look amazing
I think we are lucky this wasn't more like the Spanish flu ..can you imagine what the toll would have been if people had been as misinformed/confused (and behaved as poorly as some) during covid?
Anyone else just super jealous of Tazawa's silver locks? Man I wish my hair would've just started turning silver instead of thinning by my 20s..... anyways, ignore this, back to the fish! Dean has never seen sunspots?!?!?!? I can send him about a dozen in 6 months.
Stores like this do not exist anymore!!!!but I hope they remain open for years to come I miss old school fish shops like this, my old school lfs closed down and the fish hobby scene is Pensacola FL is basically non existent now!!!!
First time I stepped in to this store must have been 1991, yes 30 years ago! I was there all the time back then and witnessed when Ady went through her pregnancy, had the baby girl, and then in the blink of an eye the baby girl was a teenager. Also had that little dog that followed me around the store. Haven't been in the store for at least 15 years though, glad to see they're still there.
It's an incredibly place! Justin and Ady taught me how to set up my tanks with only a gravel substrate for better filtration, 3 1/2" in the front and 5" in the back of the tank and lots of plants. I was skeptical at first but also followed their advice of no water changes, just topping off. It works...good water quality and healthy fish! I love their lush, DIY fish tanks. This is the only place where I buy my fish, plants and supplies! They quarantine their fish. YES! I bought some of the Venezuelan cordoras!
Thank you so very much for the time and work for this video. We have all seen some incredible fish we've never seen before now. Again thank you and to all those behind the scenes.
It's been 2 years but, this video just popped back up on my feed today. Boy do I miss my almost monthly visits to Ocean Aquarium in San Francisco. Such a great shop and super nice folks, easily one of the must see shops to see in the country. I need to plan another trip there with big "Z" of Tazawa Tanks.
This is that place that has bottles of like gatorade and misc bottles upside down on the side of the tanks where the owner refills it manually everyday with a tank. Super cool. If I ever go to SF I'm totally stopping by
Dean said like a kid in a candy store. I can agree 100% . When I am in Jacksonville NC there's this store called (The Fish Cave) amazing mom & pop store been there for years. I just love places like this. Thank you so much for sharing this content 👍👍
Absolutely perfect timing. I’ve been wanting to visit this store for a few years after seeing the videos. Long long ago I was heavy into fish. I just set up a tank for the first time in about 20 years. My plan is either a shell dweller (I know they’re very difficult to get, I still know a couple people though) colony or a birchardi colony. I live 2 hours south of this store and I’m headed up Monday to get some of those birchardi!! Sitting in front of a fish less aquarium and super excited!
lmao. thats cause its very overpriced, but I like to spend a bit too to help keep them running. Rent in the middle of the city off Van Ness aint too cheap
Hi Zenzo. Don’t know if you will see this note so long after posting this video, but I hope so. All of the tanks had a deep layer of gravel. My first thought was they all have undergravel filters, not then I realized they didn’t have the bubbler towers. The fish & plants were clearly very healthy. Did you or Dean ever learn why the gravel layers were so deep?
The shop looks so run down and this is the kind of store I want to buy all my fish from. I go to a shop like this in my town. Always the best experiences
I'm in Ontario, Canada, we're in a "stay-at-home" order for 6 weeks. Then I suspect the Canada/US boarder will continue to be closed for non-essential travel. As much as I love my aquariuma hobby it's not essential. A fish tour is something to look forward to!
I love you guys together in videos! And what a fun tour. I love places like that are unique and full of visuals. The amount of plants they have make me smile too.
I love this video. I hope this is not a duplicate post. My power blipped for 5 seconds and my computer went down so I will try to recreate my original comment. This video looks like the TV show "Hoarders" went to a fish keeper's house, but I love it. So much product in their space is amazing. Talking old school Dean, my first tank when I was 12 years old was a metal frame 10 gallon just like you remember. More old school, I use Lee's Premium under gravel filters in all my tanks as a supplement to my Aqua Clear HOB's. One of my LFS's has been in business for over 30 years and they run UGF's in all their tanks. We talk about putting oxygen in our tanks with airstones and moving water. Why not draw that water through 97 bazillion bacteria living in the gravel? High Tech/New Tech always tries to get us to spend more money. Is the I-Phone 475 really that much better than the I-Phone 474 that I need to spend $1,500 to $2,000 to upgrade?? If so, why did you talk me into the I-Phone 474 6 months ago when now you are saying it is junk and I need to upgrade. OK, an exaggeration on version number, but I think you get the point that there is not that much of a difference. It has been built by big corporate as a status symbol. I-Phone 135 in my example still gives you all you want lol. GREAT video guys...my next trip to SF takes me to that LFS. A truly great vendor supporting the hobby.
holy crap when you started going through the nano tanks and I noticed they were just on L brackets... my jaw dropped. I can't believe they are holding that well. Great video as always
14:19 Aspidoras pauciradiatus - an amazing little fish. No matter if your a cory-lover or not. Get them when you see them, you will never regret it :-)
Super cool place to visit. I loved it and picked up more fish. Make sure you tell him you're a fish nerd so he talks to you like one. If you don't he'll assume you're a tourist. Love Justin and his wife. I went last week and I'm going again next month when I stop in San Fran
Awesome video, appreciate the sharing...I live in michigan and we have alot of LFS still around and thriving. . I agree with you people should respect each other more and be more mindful of just being polite.
I want to try deep gravel substrate with no filter. 6 gallon cube with 4 inch substrate might work. Of couse, I'll monitor the water parameter regularly for awhile until I feel safe.
The video is nice but I don’t get why no one takes the time to interview Justin. He’s always willing to talk. What makes his shop so special is all the info locked in his brain we need to ask questions to get out. If someone would do a good video like that it would blow the other yours out of the water. People want to know the secrets of how Justin does it.
We intended to, but he left before we had a chance to (he had to pick up a fish shipment). There will be more videos of Justin in the future...more interview style.
Looks like a great lfs this is what my lfs is like tanks on tanks it's only about the size of a master bedroom everything is jammed in lol nice video n share 👍
