“Learn from yesterday, live for today, hope for tomorrow. The important thing is not to stop questioning.” -Albert Einstein
Welcome! Today is my Master Gardeners Training Week 3 recap! This week was Intro to Horticulture week. It was focused on how to identify plants, how to read a plant tag (really read a plant tag), and why we should really think about using botanical names instead of common plant names! It was SUCH an interesting class and if you are thinking about joining the Master Gardeners program in your area, I would DEFINITELY recommend it! 📚 Enjoy!
🌿 UPDATE! I now have an Amazon Store where all amazon available products will be located! Looking for a link to my greenhouse? It’s here! Looking for those books I recommended? It’s here too! It’s ALMOST as fun as going to the plant store! 😉

I just want to share for all the western gardeners that Sunset Magazine is including a complimentary digital copy of Sunset Western Garden Book with a magazine subscription! The book is a bit pricey, so this was a good option for me. I hope it helps! Thanks for these great videos Janey and for sharing your beautiful garden with us.

Janey, you are the best teacher!!! 😊 That Sunset zone book looks great!!! I live in west TN, zone 7b. The tags on plants you'd buy here need more info. Our spring is very short, and our summers are hot, humid, miserable. Ugh! We have no ocean or mountains for relief. Our poor plants suffer. Then fall comes and goes, and one good hard freeze can kill a lot of plants. I'm LOVING the way you are covering this info!

Hi Janey. Loving learning along with you, with YOU being the one actually going to the class! The days and dates didn't work for me, to attend my own MG course, so I'm grateful you are sharing. What I find very helpful to learn the latin names of everything in my garden, is to put a permanent metal plant tag next to everything I grow. I got them on Amazon. They are stainless steel with long stakes to hold them fast in the soil. They look just like botanical garden ID tags. You use a special oil based paint pen to write the names, so it is weather and sun proof. I write the Latin name first, and the common name underneath it. Whenever I pass by a marker, I practice. It was a bit of work when I initially started, as I had 100+ plants, but now it's easier because I make a new tag after I'm done planting a new plant. And, the neighbors love not having to ask me every time which plants are named what. The plant tags: STARTOSTAR 30-Pack Metal Plant Labels Weatherproof Garden Markers

I know I'm behind on watching these very awesome videos, but I'm trying to get caught up quickly. Thanks so much for sharing all this wonderful information with us. I've thought about taking the course but wasn't sure what it entailed. I'm in southern California and love seeing what works for you in your garden. ❤❤❤

Thanks so much for the update. I am having so much fun following along. I like the idea of more pictures. They say they are worth 1000 words. Regarding the watering, I made labels for my inside plants with the watering requirements so my family members don't overwater my plants.

Golly gee wiz! Can't believe they stopped the Sunset Western Garden book. No wonder your's cost so much. I had an older hardback when I lived in CA. When I moved to VA I had to have one (lost my original). I still refer to it. LOVE that book! You sure are passing along some valuable information, and I'm sure your followers are really enjoying it. Keep up the good work.

Thanks for all the info Janey. Yes the sunset book is definitley the bible for all of us on the west coast. My 1995 copy is dog eared and well loved. I bought it in feb 1996 and it cost $24.95. Back then it was big purchase for me but totally worth it. I would recommend buying the soft cover book instead of the hardcover. The hardcover will be annoyingly heavy. My soft bound copy is still well attached at the spine.

Hi Janey, I am glad to hear that the Master Gardening course regards the Sunset Western G.G. as the go to for reference. The last time I bought one, it was at Costco maybe 15-20 yrs ago for under 25.00!! I was blown away at the 149.00 cost for a 2012 copy!! So sad to hear that the company has no plans to print a new version but relieved to hear there's virtually np difference except for the pictures. I heard that Sunset moved their headquarters from Menlo Park to Oakland a few yrs ago, I thought that was odd . . . Loving the Monday videos!! Really nice to see Jason helping you out during his time off, I love it when my guy helps me in the garden.

Thank you so much...!!!!! For speaking about hot weather. I live in the desert(coachella valley area, Indio) and i had a very tough time finding advice on how to grow in my climate. I was very overwhelmed when i would see a label say a plant was a full sun plant but when i would give it full sun it would DIE! Full sun in the desert has a completely different meaning. It took me 2 growing season to get it right. I researched and researched because i couldn't understand why my plants would die. If i would've known that full sun here means morning sun ONLY in the summer then i wouldn't have quit my first year. This past fall i was finally able to get peppers and zucchini some radishes and eggplants. A have many flowers that i just love! And i have big plans for the spring in a few weeks🥰🥰🥰🥰

Omg about the book! There has been SO much climate change since the old one was published, and the "newer" one is 11yrs old? 😳 holymoly, what a tease. I feel your pain. I was 59 when I started gardening, now 63. Everything is a new challenge for me in retirement.

I have an old copy of that Garden book from my parents and it probably dates back from 70s! I'm inspired now to get an updated copy, and like you it was always around on our coffee table or in the bookcase. Typically was always out with little notes tucked in and written notes in the margins of the book. My mom was an avid Rose gardener!
@DigPlantWaterRepeat

@Pipscape
@Pipscape Год назад
Frequently you can pickup a copy at Costco for a great discount. It's where I've got both my copies...one from the 90's and the updated version about a decade ago. It's also pretty common in used bookstores - on line and brick and mortar stores. It's the gardening Bible for the west coast and west of the Rockies gardeners. Watering is also quite dependent on your soil type. A plant in full sun in sandy soil will need a different watering schedule than the same plant in full sun in heavy clay soil. Know your exposure, soil, and the plants' general needs.

This is so exciting, for all of us. You are going to be the best garden helper ever. I'm sure you must watch Gardeners World on here, if not, START. They always have both botanical name and common, at least they seem the same for us too, like you said, other areas of the world ??? I'm really enjoying this ride with you, my brain would likely never remember much, but it still knows how to read 😊

Botanical (or latin) names have the same meaning everywere else on the World. That's why we use them, there's no language barrier that way 🙂 for example, I live in France, but when I search things about oaks, i'll use the word 'Quercus' and not 'chêne' (Oak in French) that way, I have more information 🙂

Yes, I'm so glad I completed it in 2017. It was fabulous, but like you said very tough -- the Latin is a bear!!! I found myself just studying for the weekly test but didn't retain so much of it because they tried to stuff so much into a short period of time. Nonetheless, I loved it and enjoy the friends I've obtained over the years. I continue to volunteer to keep my certificate up to date. Our sun in the evening is the hottest!! 5-7 pm in the summer, west facing, some of my plants croaked in that evening sun last year. Oops lol😂 My indoor plants are in a north facing window, they are so much easier to control the climate! 😂 Since about August my collection has grown from about 3 to over 25!! And apparently there’s an internet war going on over snake plants aren’t called snake plants anymore 🙄but guess what… I love my snake plant! 😅 My husband is an indoor cannabis grower on an industrial scale.
