All 8 Uechi ryu katas are in this video.
Master Kanei Uechi (Son of the founder of Uechi Ryu, Kanbun Uechi) performs Sanchin, Seisan, Seiru, Kanchin, & Sanseiryu.
His students perform Kanshiwa, Kanshu, Seichin, and Dan Kumite.
They also demonstrate Seisan Bankai.
I've had this video for years. Not sure how I obtained it. It was probably given to me years ago to put on the old Uechi-ryu.com website back in the day well before RU-vid and broadband existed.

Actually, Kanei Uechi could be considered the founder of Uechi-Ryu. Kanbum Uechi brought Pai Gai Noon to Okinawa. Kanei added the 5 bridge kata or learning steps which actually made it Uechi Ryu along with the kumite and bunkai!

I was privileged to study under Master Kanei Uechi on Okinawa at the Futenma Dojo in 1973.

Is that really Kanei Uechi? Looks much different than the photos in George Mattson's Uechi Ryu book unless he started dyeing his hair?( but the face looks quite different too)🤔🙏🙏

Thanks so much for sharing these videos, truly a rare treasure. I learned Uechi Ryu as a teenager but can't quite remember all the forms. Just one thing, are you sure that's Kanei Uechi? Doesn't look at all like the photos in George Mattson's Uechi Ryu book?

It's definitely Kanei Uechi. The pics in Sensei Mattson's book were taken years before this video was made when he was younger.

I think if you’re a trained practitioner against some yobbo on the streets you have a chance (they don’t know what you know and you could effectively do some damage) before high tailing it out of there. If you’ve ever trained with someone with Uechi or Goju their conditioning of forearms is insane don’t dismiss what you don’t know.

This is precisely why people are laughing at karate as a discipline, claiming that it’s been watered down to the point of being ridiculous. The bunkai was very weak (two punches to the back of the head…seriously!). The lesson you can take away from this: don’t try any of this crap in a fight!🗑 And I get the nostalgia attached to it, that special feeling you get by watching a traditional style being presented. Fact: we can be pretty at home, but if we try something that just looks pretty-or worse, just to honor the memory of its founder--this is where you get hurt. At the end of the day, philosophical debates aside, a Martial Art is supposed to provide you with the means to defend against the ugly truth on the street…gangsters could care less about your values and your traditions. So if it doesn’t work, cannot be applied in an actual combat situation…DON’T refer to it as a Martial Arts system. Call it aerobics or a reflective excursion.

Lighten up, sichi Dan. It’s just a mediocre demo, probably made using whoever happened to show up at the dojo that day. The high level people in the Uechi Ryu system are some of the toughest you will find, though in modern times it is difficult to attract students willing to do the old style conditioning.
