I came across your RU-vid videos about a couple months ago. I am a new knitter (self taught) and have been searching constantly about things, such as different techniques, understanding different written patterns; and being more of a visual person I learning from trying to produce a small project to frogging it and starting all over again. I am also a self taught crocheter (about 5 years). This video has helped to understand that there are good resources out there but also knowing the reference books that I can invest in a little at a time. I'm trying to establish enough to know how to go from being in the fast lane of the corporate world to making a huge leap of doing something for myself. Thank you for you inspiration. Thank you! The MHK is a journey, and you get to decide whether and how long to continue on it (or whether to stop for a good long while, like I did). The best thing about it is learning how to learn more about knitting, so that you can continue learning and becoming a better knitter, regardless of whether it goes into a binder to be evaluated.

Hi Roxanne, you probably could put seems in your sleeves and make them some centimeters smaller, reinforce the sides and cut the fabric which is too much, like one would do it with steeks.
Roxanne I loved the video! I have been called the stain master remover before. I have found one product that really helps with many different problems but especially grease, ink and soap scum. I have tried it on different fabrics and I cannot imagine it harming wool. It is called "Quick N Brite". I purchased it from a demo at the Oregon State Fair a couple years ago and have used it for everything since then. I would say to use it full strength for the sweater before dying it. Let it sit with the product on it for about 15 - 20 minutes and then add some soap and suds up and rinse well with cool water. I think you can get this product online too.
So happy to hear you paused 4 years in the middle of Level Two.....LOL That is where I am in the program and I keep getting distracted by so many fun knitting projects! By watching your podcast I am reminded once again that I really do need to finish this out. FYI, I remember when you passed Level Three which should give you a clue to how long I've been plodding on.
I think there was something that spurred me on, like the Knit and Crochet Show was going to be here in Mpls, and there was a workshop for people going through MHK, and we could have committee members look at a select swatch or two. So that got me to pull everything out, and look at it all again, and to realize how far I had come, and that I actually could complete the level in fairly short order.
Great video. When you mentioned you were a master knitter in the last episode I investigated it. And of course jumped right in and signed up for level 1. I had to laugh when you said there were 300+ master knitters. This could be a real shot in the dark. Another great pattern on your older sweater. Is it a design of yours?
Oh, no, that was long before I could design anything myself (I couldn't even seam properly!). I think it was an old Plymouth Galway pattern, but I'm really not certain. As for the MHK program, many people start Level I, and then realize it is not for them. On the other hand, I never intended to do the entire program. I thought I would just do the first two levels. I wanted to be a better knitter, I didn't really think I could/would want to design, but at the end of Level I, I knew that I wanted to complete the entire program. It was the longest, most difficult project I have ever actually completed.
I just watched this again. Don't know how I missed the borax for stains the first time. I can't use Tide, it's too hard on my skin. HOWEVER, my GoTo STAIN REMOVER that's worked on every fabric on which I've tried, is, believe it or not --- Clinique Eye Makeup Solvent. It takes so little I think I've only bought 2 bottles in the last 25 years.
Will you be fixing the miscrossed cable too, Rox? I would love to see a video of that. Thanks, this was very educational. I'm considering starting the Master Knitter program, but I may start with the instructor training instead.
I will not be fixing the cable. It doesn't really bother me, and absolutely no one has ever noticed it unless I pointed it out, and even then, they sometimes can't see what it is I'm pointing to. TYI, TKGA has other correspondence courses besides the MHK program. You might want to look into some of those, to get your feet wet. You send your work to the teacher and get feedback, but there's no pass/fail type of evaluation.
Roxanne Richardson I understand, but would you consider making a video on how to fix a miscrossed cable, on something smaller? I mean, if you need another idea for a new video.
Fixing a miscrossed cable when the work is still on the needles and you can ladder down is certainly something I could do in a video in the near future. It's a bit different to fix a cable when the work has been completed. It *can* be done, it's just different!

I really enjoyed hearing about the process of becoming a Master Hand Knitter. I had just read about it on the TKGA website. I was looking for something to help me grow as a knitter and gain a broader skill set. Do you think that any level can start this certification?
Is there a stain on the blue sweater. Maybe you will have to treat it before you dye the sweater again. And last week your sweater had holes under the arms. I wondered why and if it is fixable. I have to fix the button band on a sweater I made as the two sides are uneven. Right now it looks like a disaster.
The holes in the sweater last week were YOs, and they were intentional. :-)They were the increases used to form the diagonal ribs near the seams. The compensating decreases were near the center of the front. There are several stains in the blue sweater. As mentioned, they reappeared at some point (i.e., the sweater didn't get re-stained). One of the reasons I'll be re-dyeing it with a very dark blue is in the hope that the stains will be covered.

@@jillcaponi8995 That pattern is from around 1990, so you'd have to find a copy from an online seller. My Ravelry project page for the sweater is here: ravel.me/Rox/dfcnsoc. From there, you can click on the pattern link, which gives you the name of the source booklet. That's what you'd have to search for online from a vintage pattern seller or seller on ebay or etsy.

Really? They want certified master hand knitters? There are so few master hand knitters compared to the number of designers out there! One of the goals of test knitting is to make sure a regular knitter can understand the instructions. Having someone tech edit a pattern would be a different matter, though. There is a certification process for that, as well.
I had started seeking testers ads and then stopped after being told they required certification. I had only responded to 8 to 10 ads and decided tl stop look I ng. Im excited that not all require it. i will start looking again. Im very new to knitting, but i have loved fiber arts my entire life....or at least most ohf it. I have crocheted since before i really can remember the age. I was blessed with a grandmother who saw my interest and she taught me to do crochet with thread....my first project was a doily for my dresser. She didnt read patterns, just free form. Up until about5 years ago i would look at a piece and then just recreate it. If i had aan idea, i just made it. I have only known how to knit for just about 5 years as. Well. Im am, because of this video, encouraged to continue my education. I will also keep learning everything i can until i can get the courses. Thank you so very much. I just turned 53 and the thoughts of continued education excites me.
There is a difference between testing and tech editing, and sample knitting. If they were offering to pay, that might enter into it. If you want to get experience test knitting there are several Ravelry groups where designers look for testers. Some groups have very strict rules, and others are a bit more flexible.
Dee I love your background too! It's very similar to mine. I've wondered through out my life what my life would have been like if my grandmother hadn't retaught her self to crochet left handed to teach my Aunt then myself. I'm a thread crocheter too I learned how to knit by myself around the same time you did. I had a flimsy little book to start off with then I bought an Aran pattern way over my head but the internet helped me figure it out. I still come to sites and videos like this one to keep learning. I am sorry if I am intruding on your comment, but I wanted you to know you had a (potential), fiber art friend out there with a similar background and style. Most importantly, I wanted to mention the antique pattern library org site. They have amazing patterns for free of from the late 1800's on. If you would ever like to chat online. I don't knit for money, only for love; I rarely knit the same thing twice (and only for love). If you want one, you're going to have to knit one! After you translate the pattern from German. ;-)
