Thank you for another great video. Thanks especially for discussing the advantage of knitting a cable sweater bottom up. I love a particular sweater but have avoided knitting it because of my strong preference for knitting top down sweaters. Now, I just might tackle this sweater that I love thanks to you.

Love the idea of Finish it February. I’ve knitted a light but snuggly blanket or throw (not sure these days what word to use). I’ve started a cabled edging. I shall use this ‘finish it’ theme to get myself moving.

1. Tons of fascinating info. My favorite kind of episode. Thanks. Big thanks. 2. The 1938 sweater looks good and looks good on you. 3. The one-armed knitter is a great, inspiring article. Thanks for sharing it. Several years ago a close friend of mine had a stroke and lost the use of her right arm (she was right handed). After she got past the denial and depression, I convinced her she could still participate in our passion, quilting. Showing her how she could substitute tools and procedures was an experience for both of us. She has since won ribbons for her beautiful quilts, all made one armed. A testament to human ingenuity and perseverance. I also knew a blind woman who crocheted. 4. No knitting UFOs, so to celebrate Finish It February, I went and bought new yarn today. Now to swatch it and design myself a new vest using patterns from the Danish book you recommended several episodes back. (But I do have some 33 quilt projects in various states of progress and am using your tips to sort them. Thanks once again.)

I love your blue vintage sweater. The yoke is really nice. The discussion about cranking tubes was interesting. I have a CSM and just starting cranking some tubes for a friend of mine. She is a knitter and crafter. She loves her knitted socks, but her hands cramp up if she knits too long on smaller needles. She can handle doing toes and heels so this works perfectly for her. I’ve saved 20 g of yarn for her for the heels and toes and have split the rest of the yarn into 2 tubes - one for each sock. I’m going to add 2” of ribbing to the top of each tube (sock) for her and then the cuffs will be done also.

Hi thank you for your videos. They are so educational and I love your tone and how clearly you explain things. Thank you! I loved your videos about knitting items without patterns - these teach so much about construction and stitches and ways of thinking so as a fairly new knitter they are so valuable! I wondered if you’d ever do a video on how to knit a sweater without a pattern? Not sure if it’s doable but I’m keen to see different types (like when you mentioned drop shoulder etc) and what that means. Maybe it’s too big a topic or too much knitting so I’d understand that. Even showing one for a baby would be amazing! I want to make a basic one to try it out but can’t find the right pattern and as I saw you talk about the sleeves I thought it would be great! Thanks again x

I do Portuguese knitting when it’s all purl. I have a knitting pin, as the wool rubs the back of my neck..I use potash alum as a mordant when I dye yarn. I have made my own lye by draining water through the ash. I believe that burnt vines make the best ash for making soap.

Fantastic video. Huge thanks for discussing all the sleeve options. Seeing them was easier than reading about them. It is exactly the info I need to finish my cable pullover (which I knitted in the round). Just one question, did you have an video about the construction of the earlier part of the pullover, specifically the neckline shape ? (I did search, but couldn't find one).

You should check out A Lefty Knitter Podcast. Aquila has a circular sock machine and shows the socks and tubes she cranks on it on her podcast (she also offers this service). In a couple of videos she talks about tension and gauge and how doing different things with the machine affects the results.

Such good timing on your discussion of that sweater sleeve. I'm making a cable sweater for my daughter and had some doubts on how to be sure of my finished sleeve length. I like the idea of knitting it top down to what I *think* is my target length, but waiting til she can try it on to finish off. You're such a treasury of knowledge, Roxanne!

Thank you for posting. I particularly liked the last part about the sleeve and the modified drop shoulder. I am in exactly in the same spot with a sweater I'm making for my daughter. I think I'm going to do the sleeves top down but I'm very nervous about the decreasing. It will work out, but it's one of those things where you panic and say, "But I've never done that before!"

I sent seven skeins of sock yarn to Knit Spin Farm for them to crank into tubes for me. They were super friendly and helpful! I had them crank some 72 stitch tubes and some 64 stitch tubes and then I told them the gauge I wanted for each. I would highly recommend them. I also purchased some of their yarn, really nice sock yarn!

I'm sure you're a Ruth Goodman fan just like I am, but either on Victorian Farm or Edwardian Farm (ugh it might be Wartime Farm - not sure, I watched all of her series over the last few months) the boys make potash in a kiln. Also Ruth uses it as a soap ingredient often across multiple series. Super interesting to learn more about it! Also, as a dyer, I think getting a sock machine might be in the future! I have seen this around the community but I don't think it's super common.

When you held the brown sweater up close to the camera it actually showed up really well. I was surprised! Most of the time when a podcaster is talking about the dark sweater they're working on, it just looks like a big black blob and I have to take their word for it regarding all the details. :)
@RoxanneRichardson
@RoxanneRichardson 3 года назад
If the sweater takes up the whole frame the camera will adjust the white balance. If there's anything light colored next to the sweater, the camera has to figure out how to adjust it. I have to peek around the sweater to check my video monitor in order to see if the camera has worked it out, or not!

Coincidentally, I’m considering purchasing sock tubes from a new company in my area. I’m thinking this would be good for family members that I don’t like to knit socks for because they have large feet. Maybe in the future you could cover how to get a good fit with the tubes.

I was very interested in the yarncraft council and it has some great information in there. But why have you suggested people go there to find out what UFO means or even WIP. These abbreviations don’t exist even if you search with the magnifier, nothing will show up. These abbreviations only came about since Ravelry and Americans who love to abbreviate everything!!! I think you will still have to say the full meaning for the newbies.
@RoxanneRichardson
@RoxanneRichardson 3 года назад
I first suggested that for they can try to *google* terms, making sure to preface the term with "knitting" to ensure they get relevant hits, using the example of UFO as one that would not give them a meaningful answer if they didn't include knitting in the search. FYI, WIP is an abbreviation used widely by many people who make things that take a while. It's not an invention of Ravelry, and unlikely to be an invention of knitters. The point was to explain to people how they can find answers quickly on their own, when they come across terms they are unfamiliar with.
