I've heard, that solo before the bass solo, in the clean interlude after harmony was played by James, but don't think so, because his solos are always great and on point, master of puppets, tp live is to die, nothing else matters - damn masterpieces in soloing. So i think it must be Kirk, but internet tells bout james cause he's likely leave a solo in instrumantal. Idk, just my opinion
I look it as a blueprint for the future Metallica Songs and Albums. New harmonies, ballads, Lyrics. It was similar to its previous two Albums but also very much new.
I've been listening to Orion almost daily the past 14 months after getting out of hospital for cancer treatment. Almost dying tbh, made me appreciate Cliff even more, even though I've worshipped his music for over 30 years and have Cliff tattooed on me for 30 years next year
Orion is the reason why I fell in love with Metallica's music. RIP Cliff. And yeah, I wanted to go into more detail into the use of the wah pedal and distortion used on bass.
it’s amazing how it would be semi clean and then when he pushes the wah down it sounds super distorted, it’s amazing i wish i could figure it out on guitar
@@BigFatCaulk The Morley pedal he used, Morley Power Boost (and this might be how wah pedals overall work), lets the highs through when you press it one way, and the lows when you press it the other way. So, you alternate between a high pass and a low pass filter. Overdrive and distortion effects are usually more apparent to the ear in the higher frequencies, so when pushed to the highs, it might sound more gritty/dirty, as opposed to the lows. Eventually, I'll get the same pedal he used and experiment with it, myself.
I remember when I listened to Battery/Damage Inc. for the first time. I didn't know what it was, but I can feel the vibe - pure aggressive \m/ Happy Birthday, album all of times. Sorry for my mistakes - I'm russian gopnik :) P. S. Про "оторвать от сиськи" было сильно, хехех.
I am 51 and from the Bay Area. I saw Metallica for the first time in November 1983 @ The Berkeley Keystone (20 minutes away from my house). I was 14. I could post so many stories it would crash the page. Check out the book/movie “Murder in the Front Row” instead, that was our scene 😈
I never noticed the resemblance of thingy bad MOP, that's very interesting, and I would say that MOP is the perfect Thrash Metal Album, can't believe it turns 35 tomorrow What a great video Andriy, thank you for everything!
@@AndriyVasylenko Maybe he got the credit for that riff for the same reason that Cliff got credits for the guitar harmony in "Ride the lightning" he took the melody sung by Lars and transformed in a guitar harmony while Kirk took the fast riff from "Sanatarium" and transformed the riff in that bridge, both were writen by another member of the band and later transformed into something else.
I agree, I can totally imagine him writing that riff. Perhaps he had written just the power chord progression and the 0-2 was added by James whilst replaying it later, a bit like how they modified the tail of the chorus riff in Master - which was also Kirk's like said in the video
Video idea: Make the perfect/favourite Metallica album using 1 track from each position in an albums tracklist. For example: 1. Blackened 2. Master of Puppets 3. FWTBT ... ... 13. Fixxxer 14. The Outlaw Torn
For me it’s: 1. Fight Fire with Fire 2. Master of Puppets 3. Motorbreath 4. Fade to Black 5. Disposable Heroes 6. Whiplash 7. Orion 8. To Live is to Die 9. Dyers Eve 10. God that Failed 11. My Friend of Misery 12. Spit Out the Bone 13. Fixxxer 14. The Outlaw Torn
Mine would be: 1. Battery 2. Four Horsemen 3. For Whom the Bell Tolls 4. Jump In the Fire 5. Shortest Straw 6. Leper Messiah 7. Creeping Death 8. Call of Ktulu 9. Dyers Eve 10. Metal Militia
Too tricky to pick: No.4 or 7 are top hits, while 3 or 6 somehow second league, and above 10… not much to choose Blackened / Hardwired Four Horsemen / Sad but true For whom the bell tools / devils dance One / Fade to black Wherever I may roam / all nightmare long Whiplash / harvester of sorrow Orion / creeping death Ktulhu / To live is to die Dyers eve / seek&destroy Metal militia / the god that failed Misery Spit out the bone / struggle within Fixxer Outlaw torn
Mine is: 1. Enter Sandman 2. Master of Puppets 3. Broken, Beaten and Scarred 4. One 5. Disposable Heroes 6. Whiplash 7. Creeping Death (sorry Orion!) 8. Damage, Inc. 9. Dyer's Eve 10. My Apocalypse 11. My Friend of Misery 12. Spit Out The Bone 13. Fixxxer 14. The Outlaw Torn
A couple days ago I watched an interview Gibson guitars did with Cliff's father and he talked about Cliff showing him and his wife Orion prior to Master of Puppets. "Hey, we can waltz to this!" I loved that.
Cliff was really excited when the boys started working on what’s to be Orion )) seems like those harmonies initially were something Cliff kept to himself
I have no question, but a curious thing the 1st time I heard of this album in my cassete tape (1997-1998) when I was a young kid (9-10 years old). After the “Master...Master... Master” I thought the song had finished; then the clean parts of guitars would be a new song, or the 3rd song of the album. It was always a curious thing to me (I didn’t understand anything about english, lyrics, nothing), but besides that, I falled in love with this album until this day. Maybe it is my favorite album, the album I grew up listening to in my cassette player in my house. I say it is maybe my fav album, but after I discoveref RTL and AJFA and... you know, I cannot decide for these 3.
Master of Puppets shows, how good and creative guitarist Kirk really is. Not as a technical player but as a componist. His riffs have always been unique, iconic and badass.
I remember being 12 and learning the opening to battery on a pice of shit acoustic and thinking holy shit this is awesome im 31 and can play the whole song now and i still think holy shit this is still awesome
I could never imagine when i became obsessed with Metallica, especially Puppets, back in '95, that there would be incredible breakdown videos like this in the future. Thank you Andriy for doing such a great job with all of these
I'd like to mention that when in Welcome Home, when the speed and riff starts picking up at the end, it sounds a lot like Helena by the Misfits, check it out to see what I mean.
1. Battery = Fight Fire with Fire 2. MOP > RTL 3. Sanitarium < Fade to Black 4. The thing < Bell tolls 5. Disposable > Trapped 6. Leper > Escape 7. Damage = Creeping Death 8. Orion > Ktulu I fixed it for you... Puppets wins! Though both are great. ;-)
Your videos keep getting better dude 🤘 Note: the main riff from Master is definitely James'. There's an interview with Kirk where he talks about hearing James play that riff for the first time
7:38 Actually, I think the chorus makes the most sense. I did have a reason for this, but upon reading into it deeper myself, it actually didn't make much sense, but I think it just fits Kirk's riffing style really well. Plus, it's the ONLY riff in the song that sounds the way it does. The rest of the riffs make sense as James' compositions, he's good at arpeggios, fast chugging, and open almost flying sections. I bet that the version of the Chorus riff in James' riff tapes is probably a variation on what Kirk wrote. Or at least one of them is.
Love your channel! Stumbled across it last weekend. Nice to see someone who probably loves Metallica as much as I do. You’re a likable dude and I enjoy hearing what you have to say. I’ve learned a lot already and I didn’t think there was much more I could learn about Metallica. Keep it up!
6:36 It really reminded me of Trouble - Psalm 9. I read somewhere that James and Kirk watching these guys live, so i think Thingy was inspired by Trouble.
The chorus is definitely Kirk's. Kirk has a tendency to do more single-note runs in his riffs Reference: (Master pre-chrous, damage inc interlude, my apocalypse interlude, and to a lesser extent creeping death breakdown)
Discovering Metallica in middle school, I quickly came to the conclusion that MoP was their greatest work. In the 25 years since then, I have discovered other bands and music. Nowadays, I can appreciate each and every Metallica album in equal magnitude.
As in your case with CTE, when you were born on the same day the album came out, and I was born on March 3rd (wrong year tho), MOP release day. So I listen to Master every birthday and feel a kind of emotional connection with this album. I think it's cool!
Nothing can ever tip those 4 first metallica records it's pure perfection and rawness in my eyes the newer stuff from the is good and all but the energy vibe and emotion those ablum brought especially master and justice
Rode my bike to get an early promotional copy at the swap meet when I was 12. It has the warning label on it with a bunch of profanity listed that can be found on the album. Still my favorite Metallica album.
Oh god, such a perfect record. Defining moment in Metal sound in general, a "before and after". My favourite and I think the best Metallica album. Love your videos, keep up the friki 'tallica fan content man, good job!!!
If you’re gonna do And Justice for All, it has to be about the bass, the fact that all original members have their reasons and variations of those reasons, and how it was even allowed to be muted in the first place. Maybe there can acc be closure on that.
Oh.. anytime i listen to someone talking about cliff like kirk or james. or even if i listen to one of is iconic songs or the songs that was composed for him i get so emotional. i really wish we had him.. Rest In Peace Cliff. \M/ Edit: it is really weird feeling like this even though i have never heard his voice. i feel stupid but it feels right.
Sorry 4 my english :D А вот для меня - именно Orion - это прощальная песня ТОЙ Металлики, настоящий трибьют Их Бате - Клиффу)... После смерти Кллиффа родилась новая, где-то лучше, где-то хуже, но, все же, другая группа...
I think that Kirk composed the leading riff on "Welcome home". The one that is before the 4th solo. And why he is not mentioned on battery? He composed the breakdown
I'm glad you mentioned how James was a student of Cliff, but absorbed much of that knowledge. When Cliff died, I don't think James got enough credit from fans at that time of what his abilities had become individually.
The progess of James between 1982 and 1985 is huge. In everything: tightness, composition, stage presence, vocals... Willing to always improve, big ambition without ego, and freaking working your ass off - that’s how he’s become the greatest, yet so likable
Ride the Lightning..Master of Puppets..Both have the same formula "Fight" has that clean guitar which leads to distortion then complete madness.."Battery" Clean start which again leads to complete madness.Ktulu a masterpiece indeed..So is Orion ..Fade ..Sanitarium..after 35yrs of Puppets..Damage Inc intro still gives me chills..🤘💀🤘
And actually Kirk said in an interview that the harmony part, near the end, that he got the harmony himself inspired by a thing or riff Cliff had at that time. So I i think Kirk got the credits on Sanitarium because of that harmony part.
When I first listened to MOP years ago I only listened to the title track, but about a couple months later I stumbled upon Battery. It was a day I'll never forget. Happy birthday Master of Puppets! And best of luck with the whole eye situation, frrriend! \m/ \m/
Metallica was very, very erratic in making the album It turned badass when people listened to it without a critic perspective To identify Kirk riffs, just take into consideration if the riff is based on a different string than low E. If you notice most of his riffs are based on A string with usual alternate picking, like disposable heroes, master's chorus riff and some others which means the Dyers Eve riff, the hardest Metallica riff, couldve been written by kirky baby.
Interesting perspective! Also the C-B-A-B with hanging high F# from Trapped Under ice could hint on Kirk too. Dyers has it, as well Master verse (modulation)
8:31 "you see they ended it with F instead of E" Metallica figured out *"press F to pay respect"* before COD Advanced Warfare, they knew something gonna happen to Cliff...
I completely agree but right the lightning was hot too and so was kill them all if I was going to say the best of it'll be it would be those three and garage days
