You have given me an idea to make 1 of them into a game gear to mega drive adapter, I'm pretty sure master system and game gear have a very similar pinout to the cartridge slot if not the same. Or if you had a 32 x aswell you could make an official variation of the retron 5, use a mega drive 2 add 2 additional slots 1 for master system 1 for game gear and mount the 32x internally like the Neptune. And bobs your uncle a 1off monstrosity lol. Cool video mate 👌👍

I wonder if it would work in the megadrive 2 out of it's case.

There's notthing to the Power Base Converter. The only tech on there is that Signetics CK2605. Apart from that, it's literally just an adaptor! All of the Master System hardware was already inside the MegaDrive! Hardware backwards compatibility way back in 1989! The CK2605 seems to be a very old FPGA type chip. Googling it has it show up in the hardware specs for the OutRun arcade board as a "Sound FPGA". I know the Japanese version of the Master System had an FM synthesiser which our version didn't have, maybe that CK2605 is for that (obviously the Master SYstem's FM synthesiser was different to the MegaDrive's FM synthesiser) Very few Master System games used the Master SYstem's FM synthesiser (as only the Japanese version had one) so it probably made for sense to Sega to put the Japanese Master System sound chip in the converter rather than the MegaDrive itself along with the rest of the Master System hardware!

Thanks for this video. Sega did not key the board that fits into the Genesis slot so it fits in either way. Mine did not come out with the top board so I had to flip it upside-down and push it out, causing it to drop onto my bench with no way to tell what the orientation was. Also, one of the ferrite bar “weights” was cracked though I doubt I did that. It fell only a few inches onto a soft, rubbery, ESD mat.

That's not a weight it's a ferrous RF shield like the cylinders placed on computer cables to stop interference it was their solution to not being able to put thin metal shielding found around the motherboard on a console.

I'd have tried the pcb in the megadrive 2 just to see

The rings continue spinning when paused just like bricks and some coins in Super Mario Bros. 3 keep shimmering. For some NES games the animation was achieved by bank switching which keeps happening with every frame even when paused. …but it wasn’t just 8 bit systems.

would the master system control pad work on this

Could you change it to 50 to 60 MHz on the unit or would you need to do it on the mega drive console?.

Nice video. I've got a question. I recently bought the same adapter. Your screen is so colorful. When I plug in my sonic 2, ive got a flickering screen and color defects only ingame, not on the title screen. Any idea?

could be a few things. maybe the vram chip needs replacing, or possibly the caps on the board could be leaking. Could be a simple clean of the board could help, as dust could settle across contacts to cause a short on the board which can be seen as graphics problems.
