Today I share my exercises for Schumann‘s Coda of the 2nd movement of his Fantasy in C major. To me, this is a very challenging bit of piano repertoire and in addition to my piano tutorial, I also share my personal performance horror story with it, my experience and how I overcame it. Hope you enjoy! :)

Noch ein faszinierendes Video! Thank you for responding to requests for a video about this part of the Schumann Fantasy. Even Horowitz once got muddled in this coda so that says a lot for how difficult it is!

Thank you! Yes, this passage really is uncomfortable 🙈😂

Two thumbs up, Donae! Very practical advice, as always. I played this piece when I was a young man over 40 years ago, but I don't have the nerves or the stamina for it today.

That sounds wonderful, I find that it is such a special experience to play this masterpiece. 😊

What a fantastic find. This coda is a sort of personal obsession of mine and have taken note how many pianists over the years have mounted it. You're giving a practical method of "getting it under your belt" must be a great help to aspiring artists. One other aspect of the impact of the coda is the actual transition from the repeat section (and its rather sonorous cadence)) to the coda itself. Once the A' section concludes should there be a breath before the coda? should it follow in a continuous flow? tempo change? dynamic change?. I find this critical transitionary moment as critical to the emotional effect as the precision and technique of the coda itself. Many years ago I heard Pollini play this and the energy from the A' cadence continued in a single phrase to the coda. Breathtaking. Your coaching and methodology goes a long way to helping a pianist to dive into the coda in any emotional context.

Very interesting and a good teacher. In that king of coda, I'll do the cold shot but with one shot only. Distracting is useless in my opinion. This is the kind difficulty that you do not divide into exercice . All you suggest, I will not do for that kind of passage. What I could do is notice the technical demand and work to it in a complété différent exercice, concentrating on the sound, not the technic. No technical point should stop you. I could also sing the passage. Schumann did a not of Lied.

I love your suggestion of singing the passage, this is great!

These are wonderful videos. I wish I had learned how to properly practice when I was young. By the way, I just listened to Kissin, Kempff, Arrau, Richer, Perahia, and Horowitz play this coda. Perahia and Kempff massacred it while Richter and Arrau made it through with only a minor mistake, both of whom I think were recorded and not live. Horowitz's approach was unique to say the least.

So interesting, I think I am going to head over and listen to those recordings in comparison myself right now. 😉 Thanks for watching! 🙏🏻

Hi Danae, Thank you for these great and educational videos. May I ask you: How do you do that in this movement with your fingering in the positions where your right and left hands have to interlock. As noted, or do you grab the chords more comfortably in your hands?

I actually play it as noted and place my left hand slightly over my right hand. 🙂 thanks so much for watching!

ahem...er... when you played it "slowly", that might be the actual tempo that Schumann had in mind for its performance!!!
