This tutorial should be mandatory for every new photographer. I wish I had this years ago when I was first starting out. Simon, you are an incredible teacher. You have the ability to break things down to where the concepts are completely understandable. Plus, you give us the visual examples as well. I can't thank you enough. The next time someone comes to me with questions, I'll be sharing this tutorial. After all these years, I'm still learning something new. Thank you!

Hello from Toronto, really enjoy your content. I'm just getting back into photography after over 40 years out of the hobbie, lol yes that's a long time. Anyay nearing my retirement and figure this would be a great hobby to get reacquainted with. The camera will be a R6 Mark 2 (first lens is to 24-105 F/4 L) from Henries however making and SD Card choice seems to be a daunting one. Any tips on what card to get? This is the one im looking at but wonder if the speed will be fast enough for 4k video and raw photos. Subjects will be travel photos, wildlife especially birds in the future (Sandisk Extreme PRO SDXC 128GB 200MB/s UHS-I) The V90 are insane in price a mind numbing $ 250 on sale at Henries. I don't mind spending the money if its necessary to get the most out on my camera. Thanks joe
@simon_dentremont
@simon_dentremont 6 месяцев назад
It will be ok for photos, but not 4K video. The manual should tell you what minimum write speed is needed for 4k video.

why not make a PDF file or Word file or an algorithm for setting cameras? Not everyone remembers those things you are talking about. there is printed paper on the setting(can be given a picture of the windows of the camera- screen shot) after setting.

If you shoot jpeg, check your ‘picture profile” settings in the camera. They may be coloring your photos. If in raw, not sure. Make sure you’re not importing them and adding a profile automatically in software

My thoughts on RAW are simple: shoot RAW+JPG. If you're happy with the JPG, you can just delete the RAW later. But, if for some reason you like the composition but not the edit, you have the RAW to go back to. Also, in a couple years time, you might want to fiddle with the RAW. If you take pictures, save both, the RAW editing power is huge and can make a dull boring foto really pop out! My opinion and my personal practice.

Solid plan
@reinhard8053
@reinhard8053 10 месяцев назад
If you are e.g. on vacation and want to do something with a picture without any processing, it is much easier in JPG. I started with that (on a EOS350D) but switched to just JPG because it was too slow for some motives. Now I only switch to both formats if I expect the picture to be problematic with contrast and such or if I want to do something special with it.

ISO means International Standards Organisation, before which it was ASA (American Standards Association), before which there was Weston, DIN ( Deutsches Institut fur Normug) and Scheiner.---Love your vids. (Bob-Liverpool UK).
@simon_dentremont
@simon_dentremont 10 месяцев назад
Actually, it’s International Organisation for Standards (IOS), and since in various languages it would mess up the order of the letters, they adopted iso as a word, taken from isos, greek for equal.

I hadn't heard "isos"(?) for derivation of ISO "film" speed - I understood it was from the International Standards Organisation acronym. "ASA" was used in America "back in the day" and "DIN" in Europe. ISO became more common in maybe the 80s?
@simon_dentremont
@simon_dentremont 10 месяцев назад
Actually, it’s the International Organization for Standards (IOS), and fearing that translations would mess up an acronym (IOS, ISO, etc), they created the word “iso”.

Simon. I have a Canon 6D Mark II with a Tamron 70-200 F2.8 lens. I have all the camera settings correct for indoor competition swim meets. AI servo, Auto ISO, 400 shutter speed and F4.5. When I am at the end of an indoor swimming pool taking photographs of a swimmer competing in the butterfly, I use single shot mode and attempt to time the swimmer at the perfect time with arms outstretched. The majority of the photographs are out of focus while some are in focus. I am not sure if it is the camera or my lens that cannot seem to focus fast enough when the swimmer pops up out of the water. This camera and lens should have no problem capturing this type of action. Any ideas what might be wrong ? Thank you in advance.

Thanks for all your help, Simon. I eliminated my phone in my workflow and now I'm able to transfer RAW files at full resolution on computer. (You may or may not remember my comment on your last video). Next, I will try to hone Lightroom and Photoshop skills. Thanks again!

My canon SX720HS has Servo (on/off) and Continuous (on/off). And if both are off, I have AF-Point Zoom option. I don't know what the continuous does in this case, if Servo serves that function. It also has a Continuous shooting AF. Which would be recommended for shots of the ocean/horizon? I'm lost where to start as a base to experiment from.
@simon_dentremont
@simon_dentremont 10 месяцев назад
In Canon, the setting called « continuous autofocus » means « keep focussing even when no button is pressed ». Turn this off. For ocean/landscape, turn off servo and just use one shot

Hi I love your videos so helpful. I photograph horses racing in Scotland I usually shoot in manual but I’m never 100% happy with the focus of them it’s either the rider or the horse focused never both. It’s always gloomy light aswell. Do you think i should change to shutter priority ? Any advice would be great thank you
@simon_dentremont
@simon_dentremont 10 месяцев назад
Your challenge is that you have two goals. To get both the rider and horse in focus, you need more depth of field, soma smaller aperture. You also need to freeze the action, so more shutter speed. I’d shoot in Manual with auto iso, and stop your lens down a bit to get both in focus.

Bear with me for contradicting. Shouldn't the caption read as "understand...." and not "Learn..."? Despite understanding these concepts decades ago, I am still learning many of them. One could learn only through experiences. The only way one could gain experience in photography is by keep trying out all available combinations of settings. Thank you once again for the numerous highly enlightening videos. They have certainly enhanced my understanding and made me a better photographer.

Hi there Simon, thanks for the video! I have a question and I was curios if you could give me a good answer. I also like to shoot in Manual with Auto ISO, but also I would like the exposure to not be at 0 all the time but to change it maybe to -1, so my highlights dont burn out. Is there a good way to achive that? Since only the ISO fixes my exposure when I set the Stutterspeed and Apature, can I control the ISO not to go to 0 but to fix the exposure to -1? Or can I change the settings in the Semiautomatic modes, so that the Apature or the Shutter has priority over the ISO? I hope you understand my problem and you can help me with it. Thanks and sorry for grammar or spelling mistakes :)
@simon_dentremont
@simon_dentremont 10 месяцев назад
On some camera brands, if you set the iso to -1 EV, it will stay there when you turn the camera back on in the future. You can set it to -1 EV using the exposure compensation function. On some cameras, you can also set a maximum ISO, so the camera will change the aperture or shutter speed after the iso limit is achieved.

I'd like to see a video of why an iPhone shouldn't superimpose dedicated cameras. Why? Because I don't see any awarded professional taking their photos with phones ...
@simon_dentremont
@simon_dentremont 10 месяцев назад
The small sensor on a phone isn’t great in low light and has less dynamic range. Also, the lenses of dedicated cameras are much better quality.

No regular birder, and today while trying it out I walked upon a lonely barnacle goose on the snowy beach, and as I disturbed it, it tried to move but behaved like if it had had a stroke and lay down when I left it alone. By far no veterinarian so no idea if old age or bird flu, but her time had most likely come. Any tips for shrugging that off and not let it ruin the day? Called my mom and we both agreed we got plenty enough of those geese, but could it be a contagious hazard for dogs or foxes or birds of prey? It's far from wilderness around here so it's hard to claim nature should run its course in all circumstances.

Calling the local dept of natural resources or wildlife rehab is the best course of action. I have the local rehab number ready to go in my phone.

@simon_dentremont Just found out it was one of 21 000 geese this day, new record for this beach just north of Malmö, Sweden! But I just remember the one. Hopefully food for an eagle or fox already, but I'll try and find the number for the "town huntsman"

Great video as always Simon. My question is when when taking a family portrait (group) and one person for instance a child is positioned just in front of another person , whose eye should I focus on?
@simon_dentremont
@simon_dentremont 10 месяцев назад
You should use a smaller aperture to get more of the scene/faces in focus. But, technically, the focussing on the front face is better than the back as there is more depth of field behind than in fromt. Check out my video that comes out in the next day or two to see why!

depends which is more critical. In action, start with shutter speed.
