The pop up in surfing is arguably one of the most important skills to learn in the sport. Without a successful pop up, an optimal take off, the rest of your wave will suffer meaning slow or non existent surf progression.
Let's have a look at some of the common pop up mistakes that people make and how to fix them!

Kale kills again! One thing I've seen that's helpful for hip rotation is sliding your front arm forward when popping up. Most people pop up with one arm more forward than the other, which is easier and turns your shoulders. If you slide your arm forward then your shoulders align more easily and your hips open up.
@krispewkrem3
@krispewkrem3 2 года назад
I noticed in video, my right arm sometimes pushes the nose of the board to help get in. But usually it's more forward. Never correlated it to shoulder and hip direction.

the secret is the back knee. after initiating the cobra move the back knee slightly forward and outward. only then pop up. This one small change makes everything else falls in its place; fwd leg, hip rotation etc. It also acts as a cantilever preventing from falling backwards.

Excellent explanations Kale ! I've been surfing off & on for the last 5 yrs on a longboard or mini Mal. Like many, I still struggle with a solid pop up maneuver. Many surf instructors don't explain this fully. This is stellar. Thank you again ! Love your channel

Hey Kale. I would like to thank you for everything. I am from Hamburg Germany and we do not have that many options to practice surfing. When I am on my surftrips I try to implement every advice. Today everything came together like a puzzle. And thats only because of you. You put out so much easy to use content and helped me a lot in my progression. As a content creator my self I know how hard it is to become feedback from the people who implemented everything you teached. So thank you again for the great advice which I now could use at our 10 weeks in Portugal. 🙏🙏🙏🙏🙏

I think the most important thing is to twist your hips as you're popping up. It's that that keeps your bum down and head up. Kale doesn't mention it but he does it automatically and without thinking. I got that from another RU-vid surfing site and it was an absolute game changer for me as I truly am a struggling surfer!

Great tutorial as always Kale! I've noticed the posture and the dynamic get better if you pay attention to shoulders as you pop up: head up and bums down benefit from keeping shoulders open and down instead of keeping them closed forward and upward while pushing to pop up.

I always use the chicken wing method. Biggest thing I do is put my lead hand further up on the board than my follow hand, this naturally puts me in a planed out solid riding position once I pop up. One thing I have noticed about it though is if its not done quick enough I do tend to stall out on the wave because too much weight is on the brake (back end) of the board from the initial push off the back foot to get to my feet. Now when I am not thinking about it (IN THE ZONE) just focused on the line I end up doing it the right way in the methods you describe in your video and this usually leads to a better ride! Great job!

Thank you so much for this video Kale. I've been stuck here at OB San Fran for over a year, hesitant to charge harder because of an inconsistent take-off. I'm using an old foamy without fins and practicing this now in my garage like it's a martial arts training, even filming in slo-mo to see what I can improve. Biggest one for me is keeping my head up and balanced as I swing my legs around. I love this analytical approach that I can then take to the water to try out. Cheers everyone and much love - Troy

This is a great video made up of parts. My objective statement as being a surfer and visionary person for a while, is that, once you have collated these parts and calculated what you have to do to pop-up you must imperatively VISUALIZE the whole process and inject this process into your mind. To summarise - calculate pop-up physically, work on your strength physically, visaulaize you can do the process, and finally commit to the whole procedure - mentally and physically. 👍

Learning to foil reeeeally helped me pop up on a short board. Foiling is just more front foot biased. But it forced me to pop up clean and smooth. Interesting you say focus on the front foot. That's how I get up on a foil, and now translated it to surfing. My surf technique has been: Paddle in the direction of the wave (left/right), keep your hands on the board, get that front knee to your chest, the rear foot will follow. Get your feet planted, balanced, and gently ease your hands off the board as your feet/legs handle the weight. I never correlated the hip direction until this video and it's SPOT ON! Also, can we get a longboard in the wave pool? Too many people seem to think a longboard doesn't work in a wave like that. Keep it up Kale!

I believe I am too fat to push up properly. I have been working on pushups and bumbell workouts. I continue to practice on witewash to find the the way. I was a great surfer in my 20’s-30’s I am now 58 and need to get back to the water. After several crashes on my mountain bike and Shoulder injuries I have made the transition to the ocean again. A body board and fins have helped me to be aggressive in wave selection and placement. I continue to learn from you and your awsome videos. Southern California native. Thank you 😊

thanks! I have not been so afraid of the "box" so far, because, unfortunately, that's where I have been (incorrectly) trying to surf these years, until only recently I discovered that you are supposed to take off on the shoulder, the unbroken wave :( ...... I normally chickenly balance on top of the box with the front of my board going out over the box, like going over a ledge, until it gets lower. it's a difficult balance, I either lean back too much and the wave goes under, or I lean over too much and nose dives into the heavy wave ..... riding the shoulder makes much more sense

Kale, could you please offer advice or do a video about how to pop up on steeper take offs? The waves where I surf have a small window to enter as they tend to be steep and close out quickly. I often hesitate or pull off and could use some advice on either taking the drop or setting the rail to prevent the crazy steep drop. I see great surfers hardly paddle at all and still catch/pop up at just the right time on these steeper waves. Thanks for all of you help!

Hi Kale. The crowds in the water are at an all time high here in California. With some instructional videos geared towards getting beginners riding waves quickly, is it a possibility that the usual looking down the line is too pro for beginners in crowds. I mean it takes a second To look in front of you to possibly avoid running over someone. Any way to address this? In many places the days of running somebody over just doesn’t fly anymore just like the order of a lineup. I guess what I’m on about is beginners are watching advanced videos. Beginners running over beginners. Is this a good thing maybe? Natural selection? As you know there’s just too many people for one person per wave in many spots right now which are getting destroyed.

One mistake I even still make now after years of surfing is to not point or turn down the line quick enough. Heading straight to the beach then trying to turn ends up with you stalling and you'll see the wave heading off without you as you struggle in the foam. Either paddle onto the wave on an angle along it or turn as soon as you pop up. Only if the wave is real slow can you take your time.

So in time. I’ve also noticed that there’s a prettily big difference in a take off between your front hand and back hand. Especially when it comes to steep waves. I felt like a totally beginner when recently I was surfing my backhand on a very steep barreling waves. No problems on a wave itself, but so much struggle during pop up. Do you think if there’s a real difference or it’s more inside my head? Thanks for the tips and your work. It really encourages to progress even when surfing is a struggle haha

So for a beginner then isn’t the, what they call the “Chicken Wing” pop up where the back foot stays down and the right knee is out towards the right. Planting that front foot first and then planting the back the best approach? Also keeps the hips lower than the head
