I think it's awesome that Ben is genuinely willing and enthusiastic to share his expertise and knowledge as a long boarder with us, I find his videos so helpful and I base my style on his surfing (which I think is one of the best in longboarding). Sincerely grateful to you mate you are a legend 🤙

Thanks man. Very useful information for us beginners starting out. Its funny you mentioned that beginners tend to avoid the critical or steep part of the wave. Thats where I am at now because of fear of nosediving. I paddle like crazy on the shoulder hoping to catch it the wave where its flatter to avoid nosediving. You always make it look effortless catching these waves with your back arched. Maybe ill just to catch as many waves as I can without popping up and just arching my back. lol anyway, thanks for content! awesome videos!

Thanks! Love the fade swoop. It feels like you’re going to fall off the back of the board then the wave jets so forward and you are in trim. So cool! Occasional we fall into the right maneuver but don’t know how to repeat it. 👏

Thank you very much. You're helping me to learn how to go surfing for the first time. I tried surfing in Cocoa Beach Florida and Long Beach California but I couldn't catch a wave. My nearest water source for waves is the Great Lakes, the Dunes of Indiana namely. I live in the Midwest so my second closest source for waves is Virginia and North Carolina.

Great video...Really helps at the end when you do the "talk over" of the last clips to illustrate your points. So great to have a goofyfoot surfer post instructional videos!...most of these waves in this video were lefts...Here ( In Ventura County ,CA) its almost all rights...maybe would be helpful for you to shoot a backside approach lesson for us as well...i.e. -Do you fade/drop-knee/rail grab when you come in on a right, and when/how?
@BenConsidine
@BenConsidine Год назад
Hey! Thanks so much and super glad you're enjoying the talk over, Have a lot of right where I am as well! And love the suggestion, I did a backhand approach for The Sunday Glide 87 so I hope that helps! But if there's anything else you'd like me to cover please let me know! Yewww

this is so useful for someone like me who learned on funboard and these days primarily takes out a short fish. i can't approach the take off the same way. thanks for this tip. on another note, is there a name for the take off you do at 0:22 mark? like you're taking off "regular" but after you fade you bring the back foot up to resume your normal stance.

No worries at all! Super glad you enjoyed! I'm pretty sure that's called the reverse dropknee takeoff - feels super weird to start with but a great one to learn! Yewww!

what length is your board, approx at 9:00 you are taking off at small mushy waves so easily which im struggling to catch with my 7'6ft board. thanks

Thanks for the video! Any different subtleties using this takeoff backside?
@BenConsidine
@BenConsidine Год назад
No worries at all, hope you enjoyed and were able to get something from it! Yeah absolutely, on your backhand the same principals apply but it is a touch harder applying the weight to your heel and also it's easy to get caught out leaning backwards and arching over which might cause you to fall off, so important to rotate to point your chest in the direction you will be taking off toward, hope this helps!!

Excellent tip! I learned this in the past then forgot it. I've been having trouble making that first turn really fast, and I think this is the reason. Also, it was good to see how you handle those messy conditions which are the kind of conditions I usually deal with. Leaving your back foot where it is makes popping up even easier. I can't wait to try the refinements you suggested. Tip: Say your name. This will let people know how to pronounce it and give you more name recognition. Like "I'm Ben Considine, and this is the Sunday Glide." Thanks!

Which direction do you look at if you are trying to do a faded take off?

If you are fading left to go right, you look right, and vice versa. The body follows the eyes.

Genuine Q: popping up on your board on the hard ground with your fins on…is that not terrible for your board?
@BenConsidine
@BenConsidine Год назад
Haha definitely, this is on grass though which is very soft, the board thankfully has no damage from it haha!
@ryanallen6092

Great video but I'm confused about where to lay on the board. When you're paddling for a wave it seems like you are much closer to the nose, than when you're practicing on land. I'm just a beginner but it seems like I've been laying too far back and the nose "spoons" the wave causing a nosedive before I even pop up. Does that make sense? Thanks!

Great Video. Ben what do you recommend for board sizing. I've ridden everything from 9'0" to 10'0". Never really found the sweetspot. I"m 6'0" 185lbs. Considering a 9'6" 23" 3 1/8'"
@BenConsidine
@BenConsidine 9 дней назад
It does depend a fair bit on where you're at. But my general recommendations (like I would use generally for coaching) would be the 9'6-9'8 mark and going a bit wider towards a 23 1/2 I think - where we can find a lot of stability. Sometimes more importantly though can be things like wide point positioning - anything below the advanced stages I find we're really asissted a lot with a wide point in the middle board or 'pill shaped' board - then wide point back for further advanced progressions potentially later on (this is me not knowing you're ability level though haha) - I hope that somewhat helps!!
@magicman2723
@magicman2723 23 дня назад
Do I go straight or when you take off do you do where you take off and that's where the take will be?
@BenConsidine
@BenConsidine 9 дней назад
If I understand correctly you can do both! The angled takeoff is easier and will make it so you angle your board before getting to your feet and therefore reduce the likelihood of nosediving, but the straight takeoff will allow you to stay more critical in the pocket, but will mean nosediving is easier so we need to be quick and popping up/turning in the right place and time. I hope thats somewhat helpful!!! 🙏🤙

Is it OK to pop up using your toes?
@BenConsidine
@BenConsidine 9 месяцев назад
Hey!!! Yes and no haha, ideally, our pop-up is a powerful swing through where the feet don’t touch the board and we actually use our hip flexors and core to pull our legs through, with the knees actually being the last point of contact before the legs swing through. But that’s not to say the toes can’t ever be used. As a coach I see many different people with different starting points, especially with regard to strength and mobility. If the quick pop-up as above isn’t working due to the feet landing too far behind you, or not enough power to complete it, the toes can be a great tool to add more power and spring, and allow us to pull our feet through underneath us. The feet can only used in lingboards however as the short boards don’t allow for foot contact. I hope that’s helpful 🙏🤙

@@BenConsidine thanks so much Ben. I guess I'm on a 8ft 2 foamie. I assume like a long board I can use the toes. Then maybe with more practice ill strengthen the hip flexor and learn the right way. Thanks again for taking your time to give advice
