Master Your Wide Angle Lens

Here's how to get the most out of your wide angle lens for landscape photography. I also introduce you to Cleatus the wonder dog in a desperate attempt to get more RU-vid subscribers.
We head into the foothills of Mt Benson to discover a hidden waterfall that's just bursting with vibrant greens and the perfect amount of water for Spring.
I demonstrate how I utilize the 16-35mm lens for small, intimate nature scenes to make the most of the lovely tree roots in my foreground. This tutorial also features my thought process in finding the ideal composition for this scene.
Thanks for watching

It's funny, when you are talking photography you sound perfectly normal, the rest of the time raving bonkers, lol. Seriously, I think you are an excellent teacher. I have to agree about the use of very wide angle lenses, sometimes in large vistas they can render the farther interesting elements too small and insignificant. Cheers. Poor little Cletus, lol.

Very helpful info for using my 20mm lens. I've spent most of my career shooting in the 85mm to 105mm lengths (food photography). After watching your videos for several months through the pandemic, I’ve been inspired to start my own channel, documenting my progress learning landscape photography. I’m not a novice behind the camera, I’ve been shooting food as a pro for 10+ years, but landscapes is a different animal. Keep up the great content, you are one of several digital ‘teachers’ I have on RU-vid. PS...please keep up the locker room humor.

So pleased I’ve come across your video. I’m a hobby photographer who loves landscapes and this video just shows me how much there is I need to think about. If I’d gone to take that some shots of that area I would’ve just been concerned with the waterfall itself and would’ve missed all the interesting thing around it!! Thanks for expanding my perception

Gavin - Thanks so much for this tutorial. You have presented this in a way I had not considered before - fine adjustments for using the distortion of the wide-angle lens to your advantage. Too often I see images that contain 'foreground interest' that is just not interesting. The photographer has obviously looked for a rock leading into the image, but the viewer is really just seeing an enlarged rock with some background! I would love to see more about balancing the foreground elements, using the distortion, so that they achieve a harmonious composition, not just the desired technical elements. Your image was beautiful!
@fototripper

Thanks Charlene, yeah sometimes it can look forced. I'd rather have the foreground be so compelling that you simply MUST feature it

Nice and informative like always dear Gavin, I agree with what you said at the end, my sigma 10-20mm on a crop frame opens new possibilities for me and it was hard for me at the beginning to use the distortion as I wanted, especially that I haven't ever used less than 18mm lens
