Back in the 1950s and 60s, fashion photog Jean Loup Sieff would show up at a Vogue shoot with only an M3 and his beloved 21mm Super Angulon (which was the UWL at the time) and force himself to make it work. And boy, did he! You can learn a lot about how to either tame the quirks of wide angle, or use them to your benefit by staring at his photos. Great video. These are very hard to master, but when the results are good, there was simply no other way to get the shot. Thanks!
Also you can get away with longer shutter speeds, because slight hand shake doesn't affect the image as much as with long focal lenghts. That makes it perfect for photos from dark lit events (theatre, clubs, bars...) with the benefit that it drags you in and makes you feel like you are standing there. :) Wide angle has a great personality to it.
Thanks for posting this - I recently made the plunge and upgraded to a DSLR at the beginning of the year (from an iphone 11 pro and moment wide lens). I miss being able to take sweeping wides, so this video was perfectly timed for me.
Ultra-wides are just so fun to use. The widest I have on my a6300 is 16mm (24mm equivalent), but I absolutely love using the ultra-wide on my iPhone 11 Pro. Sure you can get crazy distortion, but if you know how to use it it looks awesome!
So funny that right at the 2 minute mark when you said about distracting elements your cat walked by in the background. Love you videos please keep up the good work stay safe and healthy
OMG the kitty in distracting elements. Amazing. We have a UWA and it takes a long time to learn. Still learning and it gets frustrating. Thanks for verbalizing this!
I use wide angles on my XPro3 for street photography about half the time. Few things I figured out quickly. Go for a 3/4 angle shot instead of the dead on shot. That way the lining up is less critical, and the distortion (what little there is on the Fuji 18mm) is not as apparent. Also, if your camera has a level indicator turn it on! It's much better to get that shot level in camera than have to move pixels around in Photoshop to straighten it out. I also find that low angles look amazing with wide angle shots, since they can focus closer, you don't have to keep the sidewalk out of view.
That shot of the man hand making these tiles gave me a major flashback (4:12). I remember seeing that episode on DRTV and just feeling like I wasn’t as good at making images as I should be. I love this image to this day.
Olá. Obrigado por ter feito parte da minha jornada de aprendizado na fotografia. Fiquei um grande tempo sem fotgrafar. Hoje estou de volta pra acompanhar seu trabalho por aqui.
Is that Laowa 9mm for the M-mount even available for purchase yet? Don't see it on their website, Amazon, or B&H. Any suggestions for ultra wide M-mount lenses?
So, I have a 10.5 mm Nikon F2.8 lens. Used it a few times but was wondering what ideal situations I could use this in. I bought this lens thinking I could make some cool pics but to be honest, I haven't found a lot of chances to use it. Can you help?
Yay, does this mean I can use UWA’s for my street work, and it’ll protect me from Corona? Just be sure not to get the guy snotting all over me in the frame. Great tip 👍
Hi Kai, been watching your vids since you were at digitalrev tv. I am upgrading to full frame, do you think eos r which is £1799 body only is a good camera in its price point.
@@Tudorguy-zw1ik The R5 will be, but the R6 is more unknown in price. Might be around the current EOS R price. So you could get a cheaper EOS R or the R6 instead. I'm very happy with my R, I upgraded from a 80D. The move to mirrorless and also from APS-C means you are not tied to a lens mount so you can always switch it up.
Worth noting that trying UWA photography doesn't have to cost too much either. May sound stupid, but I'd recommend a Samyang 18-28 f/4-4.5 for someone just getting into UWA on full frame. Absolutely horrific out past 24mm and anything wider open than f/8, but you know what? That gives you all you need to figure out if you actually like it and for between $50 and $75 most of the time. Think it's enough for you? You've saved yourself a fair bit of money. Not enough or don't like UWA? Then you found out the safe way. It also comes in a few different mounts, so it'll fit on a fair few cameras and you're basically set for adapters if you shoot mirrorless.
